Correcting for tropospheric delays is one of the largest challenges facing the interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) community. Spatial and temporal variations in temperature, pressure, ...and relative humidity create tropospheric signals in InSAR data, masking smaller surface displacements due to tectonic or volcanic deformation. Correction methods using weather model data, GNSS and/or spectrometer data have been applied in the past, but are often limited by the spatial and temporal resolution of the auxiliary data. Alternatively a correction can be estimated from the interferometric phase by assuming a linear or a power-law relationship between the phase and topography. Typically the challenge lies in separating deformation from tropospheric phase signals. In this study we performed a statistical comparison of the state-of-the-art tropospheric corrections estimated from the MERIS and MODIS spectrometers, a low and high spatial-resolution weather model (ERA-I and WRF), and both the conventional linear and new power-law empirical methods. Our test-regions include Southern Mexico, Italy, and El Hierro. We find spectrometers give the largest reduction in tropospheric signal, but are limited to cloud-free and daylight acquisitions. We find a ~10–20% RMSE increase with increasing cloud cover consistent across methods. None of the other tropospheric correction methods consistently reduced tropospheric signals over different regions and times. We have released a new software package called TRAIN (Toolbox for Reducing Atmospheric InSAR Noise), which includes all these state-of-the-art correction methods. We recommend future developments should aim towards combining the different correction methods in an optimal manner.
•When available, spectrometers provide the largest tropospheric noise reduction.•Phase-based methods work well when delays are correlated with topography.•On average global weather models are superior to local high-resolution models.•InSAR tropospheric correction methods perform 10–20% worse in the presence of clouds.
Background:
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been used extensively in clinical practice to treat patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA). Leukocyte-poor PRP (LP-PRP) has been clinically ...preferred over leukocyte-rich PRP (LR-PRP); however, it is unclear which cytokine mediators of pain and inflammation are present in LR-PRP and LP-PRP from patients with mild to moderate knee OA in order to rationalize a specific formulation.
Hypothesis:
LP-PRP would be predominantly anti-inflammatory and have reduced nociceptive pain mediators compared with LR-PRP from the same individual with mild to moderate knee OA.
Study Design:
Controlled laboratory study.
Methods:
A total of 24 unique samples of PRP were prepared in order to assess 48 samples of LR-PRP and LP-PRP taken from 12 patients (6 male and 6 female) with symptomatic knee OA of Kellgren-Lawrence grade 2 to 3. Patients underwent blood collection for LR-PRP and LP-PRP preparation through a double-spin protocol to obtain baseline whole blood, platelet concentration, and white blood cell subtypes. LR-PRP and LP-PRP from the same patient were produced at the same time and underwent a comprehensive panel through Luminex (multicytokine profiling) to assess key mediators of inflammation: interleukin 1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra), interleukin 4, 6, 8, and 10 (IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, and IL-10), IL-1β, tissue necrosis factor α (TNF-α), and matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9). To assess mediators of nociceptive pain, nerve growth factor (NGF) and tartrate resistant acid phosphatase 5 (TRAP5) were also assessed.
Results:
LR-PRP from patients with mild to moderate knee OA expressed significantly more IL-1Ra, IL-4, IL-8, and MMP-9 compared with LP-PRP formulations from the same patients. No significant differences were found between LR-PRP and LP-PRP in mediators of nociceptive pain—namely, NGF and TRAP5. Other mediators including TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-10 were also found to have no significant expression differences between LR-PRP and LP-PRP.
Conclusion:
LR-PRP expressed significantly more IL-1Ra, IL-4, and IL-8, suggesting that LR-PRP may be more anti-inflammatory than LP-PRP. MMP-9 was expressed in higher concentrations in LR-PRP, suggesting that LR-PRP may be more chondrotoxic than LP-PRP.
Clinical Relevance:
LR-PRP was found to have a robust expression of anti-inflammatory mediators compared with LP-PRP and may be beneficial to patients with long-term knee OA where chronic low-grade inflammation is present. Mechanistic clinical trials are needed to elucidate the key mediators in both LR-PRP and LP-PRP to assess their effect on long-term progression of knee OA.
The maturing mutational landscape of cancer genomes, the development and application of clinical interventions and evolving insights into tumour-associated functions reveal unexpected features of the ...protein kinase C (PKC) family of serine/threonine protein kinases. These advances include recent work showing gain or loss-of-function mutations relating to driver or bystander roles, how conformational constraints and plasticity impact this class of proteins and how emergent cancer-associated properties may offer opportunities for intervention. The profound impact of the tumour microenvironment, reflected in the efficacy of immune checkpoint interventions, further prompts to incorporate PKC family actions and interventions in this ecosystem, informed by insights into the control of stromal and immune cell functions. Drugging PKC isoforms has offered much promise, but when and how is not obvious.
Fuel-ion species dynamics in hydrodynamiclike shock-driven DT^{3}He-filled inertial confinement fusion implosion is quantitatively assessed for the first time using simultaneously measured D^{3}He ...and DT reaction histories. These reaction histories are measured with the particle x-ray temporal diagnostic, which captures the relative timing between different nuclear burns with unprecedented precision (∼10 ps). The observed 50±10 ps earlier D^{3}He reaction history timing (relative to DT) cannot be explained by average-ion hydrodynamic simulations and is attributed to fuel-ion species separation between the D, T, and ^{3}He ions during shock convergence and rebound. At the onset of the shock burn, inferred ^{3}He/T fuel ratio in the burn region using the measured reaction histories is much higher as compared to the initial gas-filled ratio. As T and ^{3}He have the same mass but different charge, these results indicate that the charge-to-mass ratio plays an important role in driving fuel-ion species separation during strong shock propagation even for these hydrodynamiclike plasmas.
A new flexible gridded dataset of sea surface temperature (SST) since 1850 is presented and its uncertainties are quantified. This analysis the Second Hadley Centre Sea Surface Temperature dataset ...(HadSST2) is based on data contained within the recently created International Comprehensive Ocean–Atmosphere Data Set (ICOADS) database and so is superior in geographical coverage to previous datasets and has smaller uncertainties. Issues arising when analyzing a database of observations measured from very different platforms and drawn from many different countries with different measurement practices are introduced. Improved bias corrections are applied to the data to account for changes in measurement conditions through time. A detailed analysis of uncertainties in these corrections is included by exploring assumptions made in their construction and producing multiple versions using a Monte Carlo method. An assessment of total uncertainty in each gridded average is obtained by combining these bias-correction-related uncertainties with those arising from measurement errors and undersampling of intragrid box variability. These are calculated by partitioning the variance in grid box averages between real and spurious variability. From month to month in individual grid boxes, sampling uncertainties tend to be most important (except in certain regions), but on large-scale averages bias-correction uncertainties are more dominant owing to their correlation between grid boxes. Changes in large-scale SST through time are assessed by two methods. The linear warming between 1850 and 2004 was 0.52° ± 0.19°C (95% confidence interval) for the globe, 0.59° ± 0.20°C for the Northern Hemisphere, and 0.46° ± 0.29°C for the Southern Hemisphere. Decadally filtered differences for these regions over this period were 0.67° ± 0.04°C, 0.71° ± 0.06°C, and 0.64° ± 0.07°C.
The landforms of northern Gale crater on Mars expose thick sequences of sedimentary rocks. Based on images obtained by the Curiosity rover, we interpret these outcrops as evidence for past fluvial, ...deltaic, and lacustrine environments. Degradation of the crater wall and rim probably supplied these sediments, which advanced inward from the wall, infilling both the crater and an internal lake basin to a thickness of at least 75 meters. This intracrater lake system probably existed intermittently for thousands to millions of years, implying a relatively wet climate that supplied moisture to the crater rim and transported sediment via streams into the lake basin. The deposits in Gale crater were then exhumed, probably by wind-driven erosion, creating Aeolis Mons (Mount Sharp).
