This book, like the others in the series, presents a classic essay by Freud and discussions of the essay by prominent psychoanalytic teachers and analysts who differ in emphases and who come from ...different theoretical backgrounds and geographical locations. First presented as an informal lecture in 1907, "Creative Writers and Day-dreaming" pursues two lines of inquiry: it explores the origins of daydreaming and its relation to the play of children, and it investigates the creative process. Following an introduction by Ethel Spector Person, the contributors to this volume-Marcos Aguinis, Harry Trosman, Harold P. Blum, José A. Infante, Joseph Sandler and Anne-Marie Sandler, Ronald Britton, Janine Chasseguet-Smirgel, Elizabeth Tabak de Bianchedi, Robert N. Emde, and Moisés Lemlij-provide commentaries on Freud's essay, explicating the twists and turns in psychoanalytic theories of fantasy and in applied psychoanalysis. Their essays place Freud's paper in historical context, describe the clinical value of daydreams and fantasies, offer a Kleinian view of fantasy, provide analytic approaches to creativity and fantasy, comment on the ambiguity caused by multiple translations of Freud's text, and reframe the idea of fantasy from a modern biological and developmental approach.

Observations on Transference-Love " may have been inspired, say the contributors, by the unfortunate emotional involvements of two of Freud's colleagues with female patients. In his paper, Freud speaks of the inevitability of "transference-love" in every well-conducted analysis, its important therapeutic functions, and its potential hazards. Transference love is discussed in the larger context of transference in general. The essays illuminate a persistent problem in all modalities of psychotherapy: unfortunate, often tragic, enactments of erotic transference and countertransference.This volume also includes the original essay by Freud.

Creativity, which the culture often depicts as a solitary enterprise, is almost always impacted or even dependent upon one or another aspect of a real relationship or an internalized object ...relationship. This paper utilizes the example of creative collaborations between writers and editors to illustrate aspects of co-creativity, co-construction, and mutual influence. It draws on Howard Gardner's observation, based on a series of biographical studies, that a creator during a time of artistic or intellectual breakthrough requires both an affective support system and a cognitive one. His observation echoes that of child researchers who emphasize that the contour of developmental lines depends not only on an internal dynamic but on interactions with significant others and on cultural and social influences as well. This paper describes both successful and problematic collaborations between writers and editors and demonstrates the strengths of such collaborations and some of their potential faultlines as well.

This study presents male and female responses of 193 university students to questions about sexual experiences and fantasies. There are few significant gender differences in experiences, but many in ...fantasies. Males fantasized about sex more and exhibited greater interest in partner variation and in the spectrum from domination to sadism. While male sexuality is often described as aggressive/sadistic and female sexuality as passive/masochistic, most men and women in our population do not report fantasies supporting such stereotypes.
