Control of polymer initiation, propagation and termination is important in the development of complex polymer structures and advanced materials. Typically, this has been achieved chemically, ...electrochemically, photochemically or mechanochemically. Electrochemical control has been demonstrated in radical polymerizations; however, regulation of a cationic polymerization has yet to be achieved. Through the reversible oxidation of a polymer chain end with an electrochemical mediator, temporal control over polymer chain growth in cationic polymerizations was realized. By subjecting a stable organic nitroxyl radical mediator and chain transfer agent to an oxidizing current, control over polymer molecular weight and dispersity is demonstrated and excellent chain end fidelity allows for the synthesis of block copolymers.
Aquaculture recently overtook capture fisheries as the largest producer of food fish, but to continue increasing fish production the industry is in search of better methods of improving fish health ...and growth. Pre- and probiotic supplementation has gained attention as a means of solving these issues, however, for such approaches to be successful, we must first gain a more holistic understanding of the factors influencing the microbial communities present in the intestines of fish. In this study, we characterize the bacterial communities associated with the digestive tract of a highly valuable U.S. aquaculture species, channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus, over the first 193 days of life to evaluate temporal changes that may occur throughout ontogenetic development of the host. Intestinal microbiota were surveyed with high-throughput DNA sequencing of 16S rRNA V4 gene amplicons derived from fish at 3, 65, 125, and 193 days post hatch (dph), while also characterizing the environmental microbes derived from the water supply and the administered diets. Microbial communities inhabiting the intestines of catfish early in life were dynamic, with significant shifts occurring up to 125 dph when the microbiota somewhat stabilized, as shifts were less apparent between 125 to 193 dph. Bacterial phyla present in the gut of catfish throughout ontogeny include Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Fusobacteria, and Proteobacteria; with the species Cetobacterium somerae and Plesiomonas shigelloides showing the highest abundance in the catfish microbiota after 3 dph. Comparisons of the gut microbiota to the environmental microbes reveals that the fish gut is maintained as a niche habitat, separate from the overall microbial communities present in diets and water-supply. Although, there is also evidence that the environmental microbiota serves as an inoculum to the fish gut. Our results have implications for future research related to channel catfish biology and culture, and increase our understanding of ontogenetic effects on the microbiota of teleost fish.

Abstract Objective The GORE EXCLUDER Iliac Branch Endoprosthesis (IBE; W. L. Gore and Associates, Flagstaff, Ariz) is an iliac branch stent graft system designed to preserve internal iliac artery ...perfusion during endovascular repair of aortoiliac aneurysms (AIAs) and common iliac artery (CIA) aneurysms (CIAAs). We report the 6-month primary end point results of the IBE 12-04 United States pivotal trial for endovascular treatment of AIAs and CIAAs using the IBE device. Methods The trial prospectively enrolled 63 patients with AIA or CIAA who underwent implantation of the IBE device at 28 centers in the United States from 2013 to 2015. All patients underwent placement of a single IBE device. Twenty-two patients (34.9%) with bilateral CIAs were enrolled after undergoing staged coil or plug embolization (21 of 22) or surgical revascularization (1 of 22) of the contralateral internal iliac artery. Follow-up at 30 days and 6 months included clinical assessment and computed tomography angiography evaluation as assessed by an independent core laboratory. The primary effectiveness end point was freedom from IBE limb occlusion and reintervention for type I or III endoleak and ≥60% stenosis at 6 months, and the secondary effectiveness end point was freedom from new onset of buttock claudication on the IBE side at 6 months. Results Mean CIA diameter on the IBE side was 41.0 ± 11.4 mm (range, 25.2-76.3 mm). There were no procedural deaths, and technical success, defined as successful deployment and patency of all IBE components and freedom from type I or III endoleak, was 95.2% (60 of 63). Data for 61 patients were available for primary and secondary effectiveness end point analysis. Internal iliac limb patency was 95.1% (58 of 61), and no new type I or III endoleaks or device migrations were observed at 6 months. The three patients with loss of internal iliac limb patency were asymptomatic, and freedom from new-onset buttock claudication on the IBE side was 100% at 6 months. New-onset buttock claudication occurred on the non-IBE treatment side in six of 21 patients (28.6%) who underwent staged internal iliac artery coil embolization. Conclusions These results confirm that the IBE device is effective at treating CIAAs and AIAs, maintaining blood flow into the internal iliac artery, and avoiding complications associated with internal iliac artery sacrifice. Follow-up will be continued for 5 years to establish the long-term durability of iliac aneurysm repair with the IBE device.
Developing cathodes that can support high charge–discharge rates would improve the power density of lithium‐ion batteries. Herein, the development of high‐power cathodes without sacrificing energy ...density is reported. N,N′‐diphenylphenazine was identified as a promising charge‐storage center by electrochemical studies due to its reversible, fast electron transfer at high potentials. By incorporating the phenazine redox units in a cross‐linked network, a high‐capacity (223 mA h g−1), high‐voltage (3.45 V vs. Li/Li+) cathode material was achieved. Optimized cross‐linked materials are able to deliver reversible capacities as high as 220 mA h g−1 at 120 C with minimal degradation over 1000 cycles. The work presented herein highlights the fast ionic transport and rate capabilities of amorphous organic materials and demonstrates their potential as materials with high energy and power density for next‐generation electrical energy‐storage technologies.
Cross‐linked cathodes: A phenazine‐based polymer, namely poly(phenylene‐5,10‐dihydrophenazine), is cross‐coupled with tris(4‐bromophenyl)amine to form an amorphous cross‐linked network that exhibits improved stability and rate capability when used as a high‐capacity, high‐voltage cathode material for lithium‐ion batteries.
Misfolded proteins in the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) are retrotranslocated into the cytosol and polyubiquitinated before being degraded by the proteasome. The multi-spanning ubiquitin ...ligase Hrd1 forms the retrotranslocation channel and associates with three other membrane proteins (Hrd3, Usa1, Der1) of poorly defined function. The Hrd1 channel is gated by autoubiquitination, but how Hrd1 escapes degradation by the proteasome and returns to its inactive ground state is unknown. Here, we show that autoubiquitination of Hrd1 is counteracted by Ubp1, a deubiquitinating enzyme that requires its N-terminal transmembrane segment for activity towards Hrd1. The Hrd1 partner Hrd3 serves as a brake for autoubiquitination, while Usa1 attenuates Ubp1's deubiquitination activity through an inhibitory effect of its UBL domain. These results lead to a model in which the Hrd1 channel is regulated by cycles of autoubiquitination and deubiquitination, reactions that are modulated by the other components of the Hrd1 complex.

The freshwater bacterial pathogen, Flavobacterium columnare, infects a variety of ornamental and farmed fish species worldwide through mucosal attachment points on the gill and skin. While previous studies have demonstrated a chemotactic response of F. columnare to fish mucus, little is known about how host gill mucosal molecular and cellular constituents may impact rates of adhesion, tissue invasion, and ultimately, mortality. Here, we describe the use of RNA-seq to profile gill expression differences between channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) differing in their susceptibility to F. columnare both basally (before infection) and at three early timepoints post-infection (1h, 2h, and 8h). After sequencing and de novo assembly of over 350 million 100 base-pair transcript reads, between group comparisons revealed 1714 unique genes differentially expressed greater than 1.5-fold at one or more timepoints. In the large dataset, we focused our analysis on basal differential expression between resistant and susceptible catfish as these genes could potentially reveal genetic and/or environmental factors linked with differential rates of infection. A number of critical innate immune components including iNOS2b, lysozyme C, IL-8, and TNF-alpha were constitutively higher in resistant catfish gill, while susceptible fish showed high expression levels of secreted mucin forms, a rhamnose-binding lectin previously linked to susceptibility, and mucosal immune factors such as CD103 and IL-17. Taken together, the immune and mucin profiles obtained by RNA-seq suggest a basal polarization in the gill mucosa, with susceptible fish possessing a putative mucosecretory, toleragenic phenotype which may predispose them to F. columnare infection.
This paper combines loan-level administrative data with household-level survey data to analyze the impact of recent macroprudential policy changes in Canada using a microsimulation model of mortgage ...demand of first-time homebuyers. Policies targeting the loan-to-value ratio are found to have a larger impact on demand than policies targeting the debt-service ratio, such as amortization. In addition, we show that loan-to-value policies have a larger role to play in reducing default than income-based policies.
