On 2019/07/30.86853 UT, IceCube detected a high-energy astrophysical neutrino can-didate. The Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar PKS 1502+106 is located within the 50 percent uncertainty region of the event. ...Our analysis of 15 GHz Very Long Baseline Ar-ray (VLBA) and astrometric 8 GHz VLBA data, in a time span prior and after theIceCube event, reveals evidence for a radio ring structure which develops with time.Several arc-structures evolve perpendicular to the jet ridge line. We find evidence forprecession of a curved jet based on kinematic modelling and a periodicity analysis.An outflowing broad line region (BLR) based on the C IV line emission (Sloan Dig-ital Sky Survey, SDSS) is found. We attribute the atypical ring to an interaction ofthe precessing jet with the outflowing material.We discuss our findings in thecontext of a spine-sheath scenario where the ring reveals the sheath andits interaction with the surroundings (NLR clouds).We find that the radioemission is correlated with theγ-ray emission, with radio lagging theγ-rays. Basedon theγ-ray variability timescale, we constrain theγ-ray emission zone to the BLR(30-200rg) and within the jet launching region. We discuss that the outflowing BLRprovides the external radiation field forγ-ray production via external Compton scat-tering.The neutrino is most likely produced by proton-proton interactionin the blazar zone (beyond the BLR), enabled by episodic encounters ofthe jet with dense clouds, i.e. some molecular cloud in the NLR.

Abstract A sample of 1.3 × 105 K + → π 0 e + νγ candidates with less than 1% background was collected by the NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS in 2017–2018. Branching fraction measurements are obtained ...at percent relative precision in three restricted kinematic regions, improving on existing results by a factor larger than two. An asymmetry, possibly related to T-violation, is investigated with no evidence observed within the achieved precision.

Cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) are hydrophobic compounds deposited on the arthropod cuticle that are of functional significance with respect to stress tolerance, social interactions and mating ...dynamics. We characterized CHC profiles in natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster at five levels: across a latitudinal transect in the eastern United States, as a function of developmental temperature during culture, across seasonal time in replicate years, and as a function of rapid evolution in experimental mesocosms in the field. Furthermore, we also characterized spatial and temporal changes in allele frequencies for SNPs in genes that are associated with the production and chemical profile of CHCs. Our data demonstrate a striking degree of parallelism for clinal and seasonal variation in CHCs in this taxon; CHC profiles also demonstrate significant plasticity in response to rearing temperature, and the observed patterns of plasticity parallel the spatiotemporal patterns observed in nature. We find that these congruent shifts in CHC profiles across time and space are also mirrored by predictable shifts in allele frequencies at SNPs associated with CHC chain length. Finally, we observed rapid and predictable evolution of CHC profiles in experimental mesocosms in the field. Together, these data strongly suggest that CHC profiles respond rapidly and adaptively to environmental parameters that covary with latitude and season, and that this response reflects the process of local adaptation in natural populations of D. melanogaster.
Examples of clinal variation in phenotypes and genotypes across latitudinal transects have served as important models for understanding how spatially varying selection and demographic forces shape ...variation within species. Here, we examine the selective and demographic contributions to latitudinal variation through the largest comparative genomic study to date of Drosophila simulans and Drosophila melanogaster, with genomic sequence data from 382 individual fruit flies, collected across a spatial transect of 19 degrees latitude and at multiple time points over 2 years. Consistent with phenotypic studies, we find less clinal variation in D. simulans than D. melanogaster, particularly for the autosomes. Moreover, we find that clinally varying loci in D. simulans are less stable over multiple years than comparable clines in D. melanogaster. D. simulans shows a significantly weaker pattern of isolation by distance than D. melanogaster and we find evidence for a stronger contribution of migration to D. simulans population genetic structure. While population bottlenecks and migration can plausibly explain the differences in stability of clinal variation between the two species, we also observe a significant enrichment of shared clinal genes, suggesting that the selective forces associated with climate are acting on the same genes and phenotypes in D. simulans and D. melanogaster.
Abstract
We present the Mid-infrared stellar Diameters and Fluxes compilation Catalogue (MDFC) dedicated to long-baseline interferometry at mid-infrared wavelengths (3–13 $\mu$m). It gathers data for ...half a million stars, i.e. nearly all the stars of the Hipparcos-Tycho catalogue whose spectral type is reported in the SIMBAD data base. We cross-match 26 data bases to provide basic information, binarity elements, angular diameter, magnitude and flux in the near and mid-infrared, as well as flags that allow us to identify the potential calibrators. The catalogue covers the entire sky with 465 857 stars, mainly dwarfs and giants from B to M spectral types closer than 18 kpc. The smallest reported values reach 0.16 $\mu$Jy in L and 0.1 $\mu$Jy in N for the flux, and 2 microarcsec for the angular diameter. We build four lists of calibrator candidates for the L and Nbands suitable with the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) sub- and main arrays using the MATISSE instrument. We identify 1621 candidates for L and 44 candidates for N with the Auxiliary Telescopes (ATs), 375 candidates for both bands with the ATs, and 259 candidates for both bands with the Unit Telescopes (UTs). Predominantly cool giants, these sources are small and bright enough to belong to the primary lists of calibrator candidates. In the near future, we plan to measure their angular diameter with 1 per cent accuracy.
