Recent outbreaks of avian influenza A (H5N1) in poultry throughout Asia have had major economic and health repercussions. Human infections with this virus were identified in Vietnam in January 2004.
...We report the clinical features and preliminary epidemiologic findings among 10 patients with confirmed cases of avian influenza A (H5N1) who presented to hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, Vietnam, in December 2003 and January 2004.
In all 10 cases, the diagnosis of influenza A (H5N1) was confirmed by means of viral culture or reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction with primers specific for H5 and N1. None of the 10 patients (mean age, 13.7 years) had preexisting medical conditions. Nine of them had a clear history of direct contact with poultry (median time before onset of illness, three days). All patients presented with fever (temperature, 38.5 to 40.0 degrees C), respiratory symptoms, and clinically significant lymphopenia (median lymphocyte count, 700 per cubic millimeter). The median platelet count was 75,500 per cubic millimeter. Seven patients had diarrhea. In all patients, there were marked abnormalities on chest radiography. There was no definitive evidence of human-to-human transmission. Eight patients died, one patient has recovered, and one is recovering.
Influenza A (H5N1) infection, characterized by fever, respiratory symptoms, and lymphopenia, carries a high risk of death. Although in all 10 cases the infection appears to have been acquired directly from infected poultry, the potential exists for genetic reassortment with human influenzaviruses and the evolution of human-to-human transmission. Containment of influenza A (H5N1) in poultry throughout Asia is therefore urgently required.
Thirty-seven Haemophilus influenzae strains from nasopharyngeal swabs (NP) and 44 H. influenzae strains from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were investigated. Of the 37 H. influenzae isolates from NP, the ...serotypes of 30 isolates were nontypeable, 4 were type b, 2 were type c, and 1 was type a, whereas all of the 44 isolates from CSF were type b. The MICs of 16 antibiotics for the H. influenzae isolates from NP and CSF were similar, and no {szligbeta}-lactamase-negative ampicillin-resistant strain was found. Molecular typing by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) showed that the 37 H. influenzae strains from NP had 22 PFGE patterns, with none predominating, and the 44 H. influenzae strains from CSF had 9 PFGE patterns, with patterns alpha (22 isolates) and {szligbeta} (12 isolates) predominating. Our results indicate that two predominant types of H. influenzae type b strains have the potential to spread among children with meningitis in Hanoi, Vietnam.
In this research, the repellent activity of five Lamiaceae essential oils, Agastache rugosa, Elsholtzia blanda, Elsholtzia ciliata, Elsholtzia penduliflora, and Plectranthus ovatus, was evaluated ...against sweet potato weevil, Cylas formicarius using a two-choice test between the essential oil-treated filter paper and the control. E. blanda and A. rugosa essential oils have some sweet potato weevil attractant properties at low dose (<47.16 nl/cm2),while N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET), P. ovatus, E. penduliflora, and E.ciliata essential oils have repellent properties at doses ranging from 15.72 nl/cm2 to 196.49 nl/cm2. The effect of type of essential oil and their dose were interactively associated with repellent efficacy. There was a increase in repellent efficacy as the dose increased for all essential oils. The repellent activities of P. ovatus essential oil and E. penduliflora were higher than the others, and the repellent effects of E. ciliata essential oil and DEET were more dose-dependent than others, indicating that at low dose, P. ovatus and E. penduliflora essential oils have stronger repellent efficacy, but at higher dose DEET and E. ciliata have greater effects. Our findings clearly demonstrate that P. ovatus, E. penduliflora, and E. ciliata essential oils are candidate materials for future investigation as repellent compounds against sweet potato weevil control.

From March 2000 to February 2002, a population-based study of Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) meningitis was conducted among children less than five years of age in Hanoi, Vietnam. Children with ...suspected bacterial meningitis were referred to hospitals and each patient underwent standardized clinical examination and microbiologic testing. In Hanoi, 580 children were evaluated for bacterial meningitis and 23 (4%) had confirmed or probable Hib meningitis. The incidence of all Hib meningitis was 12/100,000 child-years less than five years of age and 26/100,000 child-years less than two years of age. Nationally, an estimated 1,005 children less than five years of age are hospitalized for Hib meningitis and 5,107 are hospitalized for Hib pneumonia. Among children with Hib meningitis, at least 100 will develop severe neurologic sequelae and 40 will die. These data suggest there is a substantial burden of Hib disease in Vietnam. National leaders will be provided with these data to facilitate development of national vaccination policies for children in Vietnam.
