As online retailers seek to attract customers through innovative electronic storefront designs, some are experimenting with three-dimensional (3D) websites. This study examines the influence of ...website dimensionality on cognitive absorption, perceived ease of use, and, indirectly, perceived website usefulness and intentions to buy online using the website. Findings indicate that shopping websites using 3D environments are associated with lower perceived ease of use and lower cognitive absorption, compared to traditional 2D websites. The effect of website dimensionality on cognitive absorption is moderated by user experience. The implications of the study for research and practice are discussed.
The COVID-19 pandemic spurred older adults to use information and communication technology (ICT) for maintaining connections and engagement during social distancing. This trend raises concerns about ...privacy and data safety for older individuals with limited technical knowledge who have adopted ICT reluctantly and may be distinct in their susceptibility to scams, fraud, and identity theft. This paper highlights the gap in the literature regarding the increased privacy and data security risks for older adults adopting technology due to isolation during the pandemic (referred to here as quarantine technology initiates (QTIs)). A literature search informed by healthcare experts explored the intersection of older adults, data privacy, online activity, and COVID-19. A thin and geographically diverse literature was found to consider the risk profile of QTIs with the same lens as for older adults who adopted ICT before or independent of COVID-19 quarantines. The mentioned strategies to mitigate privacy risks were broad, including education, transaction monitoring, and the application of international regulatory models, but were undistinguished from those for non-QTI older adults. Future research should pursue the hypothesis that the risk profile of QTIs may differ in character from that of other older adults, referencing by analogy the nuanced distinctions quantified in credit risk scoring. Such studies would examine the primary data on privacy and data safety implications of hesitant ICT adoption by older adults, using COVID-19 as a natural experiment to identify and evaluate this vulnerable group.
The application of data science resources can enhance our ability to reduce health disparities affecting communities across the country. In this paper, we use the Preferred Reporting Items for ...Structured Review and Meta-Analyses methodology to conduct a thematic analysis of selected studies and identify micro and macro themes within the literature. The authors of this analysis reviewed articles that included data science software applications and their role in focusing efforts to address health disparities affecting the health of citizens in specific communities across the country. Abstracts were reviewed for research relevance after duplicates were removed, and documents were eliminated from consideration during the screening based on the exclusion criteria. At the conclusion of the structured literature review, the results emphasized the strong utility of geographically directed assessment. This highlights the need for the integration of geo- and statistical methodologies in the use of data science software for healthcare applications, which can be a useful means to identify locations where health disparities are present and can focus efforts to resolve these health disparities. Nurses, physicians, and health educators can be dispatched to the geographical areas where health disparities are most prevalent.
Social commerce is an emergent business model where user-generated content is a valuable source of information that minimises the risk and ambiguity surrounding online purchase decisions. This study ...examines the user-generated content represented by reviews and recommendations (electronic word of mouth or eWOM) by contrasting customer (peer) vs. authority (expert) generated eWOM, from a product buying criteria perspective. Using five consumer healthcare wearable products as a benchmark, customer reviews from Amazon.com were analysed and compared with expert reviews and recommendations from Consumer Reports using machine learning techniques such as Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modelling, logistic regression, multinomial naïve Bayes, random forest and support vector machines. The findings suggest that expert reviews and recommendations remain product-centric and are not attuned to shifts in customer buying patterns, thus missing out on important product context-based usage and evaluation criteria such as operational, personal, and environmental. Considering these results, the authors discuss implications for managers and researchers, and future research directions.
The explosion of e-commerce activities required industry and academia to understand the key determinants of consumers' online repurchase intention. We developed an integrated model by examining how ...utilitarian factors (perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness), the hedonic factor (perceived enjoyment), and social/psychological factors (confirmation, satisfaction and trust) directly or indirectly influenced consumers' continuance intention in the context of online shopping. Results from confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation model analysis with LISREL 8.72 indicate that both utilitarian factors and hedonic factors examined through this model provide statistically significant explanations of the variation in consumers' online repurchase intention. In the post-purchase stage, utilitarian factors play a more important role than hedonic factors in predicting customer online repurchase intention. The integrated theoretical framework explains 63% of the variations in online repurchase intention.

Purpose
– The rapid consumption of new electronic devices has expanded the volume of electronic waste (e-waste) and created a potential threat to the environment. Recycling of e-waste (eCycling) can ...help stem the proliferation of e-waste and its environmental threat. In order to increase this positive involvement in eCycling and design effective eCycling programs, a better understanding of eCycling behaviors is needed. The purpose of this paper is to employ the Theory of Reasoned Action as a framework to develop a model to identify the determinants of eCycling behavior.
Design/methodology/approach
– To assess the model, a survey of 327 university students is undertaken. To analyze the eCycling behavior from the survey data, a structural equation modeling technique is used.
Findings
– The findings suggest that: attitudes and moral norms positively influence eCycling behavior; the higher the awareness of consequences, the more the eCycling involvement; and perceived convenience is an important factor that leads to more involvement in eCycling.
Research limitations/implications
– This research is limited by the student sample and campus environment that might confine the generalizability of the study. Also, additional variables need to be examined in order to better explain eCycling behavior. The result of the study provides insights for organizations to build successful eCycling programs, engage young adults such as college students in eCycling, and increase involvement in eCycling.
Practical implications
– This study provides insights that can help supply chain managers to better understand the consumer involvement in eCycling. Managers’ understanding of eCycling behavior would encourage eCycling involvement by placing drop-off units in convenient locations and by creating campaigns that motivate consumers to return their e-waste. An increased consumer involvement in eCycling can help manufacturing companies lower the cost of e-waste across the supply chain and regain the value of returned materials by adopting reverse logistics.
Originality/value
– This study contributes to the stream of eCycling literature by investigating students’ eCycling intentions and behaviors on a university campus. The paper develops an understanding of how eCycling involvement might be improved.
This study significantly contributes to both theory and practice by providing valuable insights into the role and value of healthcare in the context of online health communities. This study ...highlights the increasing dependence of patients and their families on online sources for health information and the potential of technology to support individuals with health information needs. This study develops a theoretical framework by analyzing data from a cross-sectional survey using partial least squares structural equation modeling and multi-group and importance-performance map analysis. The findings of this study identify the most beneficial technology-related issues, like ease of site navigation and interaction with other online members, which have important implications for the development and management of online health communities. Healthcare professionals can also use this information to disseminate relevant information to those with chronic illnesses effectively. This study recommends proactive engagement between forum admins and participants to improve technology use and interaction, highlighting the benefits of guidelines for effective technology use to enhance users' information-seeking processes. Overall, this study's significant contribution lies in its identification of factors that aid online health community participants in the information-seeking process, providing valuable information to professionals on using technology to disseminate information relevant to chronic illnesses like COPD.
Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is used in numerous applications and offers a plethora of interesting potential new applications. However, this potential raises issues that require ...addressing to achieve its widespread acceptance by consumers. This paper investigates the factors that affect consumer acceptance of RFID technology. The purpose of this effort is to develop and test a theoretical model that contextualizes the technology acceptance model (TAM) within the context of RFID technology. The research model proposes that convenience, culture, privacy, regulation, and security are the principal factors influencing the consumerspsila acceptance of RFID. However, the results show that convenience, culture, and security are significant predictors. This study is the first in the RFID literature to use the TAM for explaining consumer acceptance of RFID technology. The findings suggest that: (1) higher perceived convenience of RFID technology leads to greater acceptance of this technology; (2) societal beliefs, value systems, norms, and/or behaviors influence the extent of consumer acceptance of RFID technology; and (3) higher perceived importance of and less willingness to sacrifice personal information security lead to lower intention to use RFID technology. Contextualization of TAM to RFID technology makes this study relevant to practitioners because the results can provide insight to organizations using or exploring the use of RFID technology.
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to develop and examine a theoretical framework that evaluates the effects of banking consumers’ justice perception on their post-complaint mindsets. It also aims ...to help business strategists to customize service failure management activities to achieve a competitive advantage.
Design/methodology/approach
To examine the proposed framework using partial least square structural equation modeling, the authors collected data through a survey. The authors also evaluated the proposed framework through multi-group analysis and importance-performance map analysis (IPMA).
Findings
Results show that recovery disconfirmation mediates the relationship between banking consumers’ perception of justice and recovery satisfaction. Moreover, after a service failure, brand equity and loyalty mediate the relationship between recovery satisfaction and positive word-of-mouth behavior. IPMA analysis at the construct level shows that fostering the perception of recovery satisfaction is crucial for creating a positive post-failure impression in the mind of the banking consumer.
Practical implications
For banking practitioners, the findings of this research provide a strategic blueprint for managing service failure by developing relationships with consumers, thus creating an opportunity to gain competitive advantage.
Originality/value
Anchored in the theoretical framework of justice theory (Adams, 1963), expectation disconfirmation theory (Oliver, 1977) and social exchange theory (Kelley and Thibaut, 1978), the research adds to the literature by providing a critical evaluation of how to influence banking consumers’ post-complaint behavior from a more systematic perspective.
•This study explores what and how posting-related attributes drive engagement behaviors.•Three positively valenced engagement behaviors in online communities are investigated.•Attributes from the ...information-, source-, and receiver-level affect engagement.•Attributes exhibit differential effectiveness in triggering users to engage.•Source-level attributes exert the largest impact across the three engagement behaviors.
Users’ engagement behaviors such as likings, sharing and social interactions in online communities are critically important to the viability and the ultimate success of these communities. However, empirical research investigating which posting-related attributes driving these participation behaviors still lags. The purpose of this study is to understand what and how posting-related attributes drive the engagement behaviors. Using travelogue data from a large traveling knowledge-sharing community, we used econometric models to investigate and compare the antecedents leading to three different kinds of engagement behavior that users exhibit in online communities (i.e., consuming, contributing, and creating). The results reveal that five attributes are associated with these engagement behaviors. These attributes demonstrate the differential effectiveness on the engagement behaviors with different intensities. Our empirical findings provide both theoretical and practical implications for online community operators to build a vibrant and successful online community.
