The manipulation of the sex ratio and age structure in many managed ungulate populations calls for a better understanding of their potential consequences on females' condition and behavior during ...rut. During 1996-2002, we manipulated the male age structure and male percentage (nine treatments during 7 years) within an experimental herd of semidomestic reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) and investigated their influence on both the body mass change and the behavior of females during rut. On average, the females lost body mass (-0.95±SE 0.18 kg) during rut, which we contend to reflect somatic costs. The females' losses increased as the percentage of male decreased, but this was certainly ascribed to one treatment with high male percentage (27.7%) as compared to the others (ranging from 3.9 to 12.2%). Female losses were highest for treatments including both young and adult males as compared to only adult or only young males, and higher for treatments including only young compared to only adult males. This is supported by (1) the higher female harassment frequency when females are exposed to only young or a mixture of young and adult males as compared to only adults, (2) the higher female harassment frequency by young males as compared to adults in the mixed treatments, and (3) the reduced females' feeding activity in treatments including both young and adult males. We conclude that the male age structure during rut will influence the females' behavior and mass change and may have implications for females' life history and for population dynamics.
We investigate how economic incentives and spell duration affect hazard rates out of insured unemployment. We take into account that insured unemployment not always ends in employment, but also in ...disability, training programs, or benefit sanctions. Our empirical basis is Norwegian register data containing variation in economic incentives and spell duration similar to that of random-assignment experiments. We find that the employment and benefit-sanction hazards are negatively affected by the unemployment insurance replacement ratio, but that the effects vary considerably among individuals. There is negative duration dependence in the employment hazard and positive duration dependence in the disability hazard.
The QB50 mission is a satellite constellation designed to carry out measurements at between 200–380 km altitude in the ionosphere. The multi-needle Langmuir probe (m-NLP) instrument has been mounted ...on board eleven QB50 satellites in order to characterize ambient plasma. The distinct feature of this instrument is its capability of measuring the plasma density at high spatial resolution without the need to know the electron temperature or the spacecraft potential. While the instrument has been deployed on many sounding rockets, the QB50 satellites offer the opportunity to demonstrate the operation of the instrument in low-earth orbit (LEO). This paper provides a brief review of the m-NLP instrument specifically designed for the QB50 mission and the case studies of the instrument’s performance on board the Ex-Alta 1 and Hoopoe satellites. The system has also been functionally verified in a plasma chamber at the European Space Research and Technology Center (ESTEC). Although the QB50 mission’s scientific goals have not been reached yet and some uncertainties still remain, there are some optimistic in-orbit preliminary results which could be helpful for the system improvement in future campaigns. Particularly, the electron emitter as part of the m-NLP science unit has demonstrated its capability in the plasma chamber and in orbit to mitigate spacecraft charging effects.
A new protocol for extraction of DNA from faeces is presented. The protocol involves gentle washing of the surface of the faeces followed by a very simple DNA extraction utilizing the wash ...supernatant as the source of DNA. Unlike most other protocols, it does not involve the use of proteinase K and/or organic extraction, but is instead based on adsorption of the DNA to magnetic beads. The protocol was tested by microsatellite genotyping across six loci for sheep and reindeer faeces. Comparison with DNA extracted from blood demonstrated that the protocol was very reliable, even when used on material stored for a long time. The protocol was compared with another simple, solid‐phase DNA‐binding protocol, with the result that the bead‐based protocol gave a slightly better amplification success and a lower frequency of allelic drop‐outs. Furthermore, our experiments showed that the surface wash prior to DNA extraction is a crucial step, not only for our protocol, but for other solid‐phase protocols as well.
A comprehensive male linkage map was generated by adding 359 new, informative microsatellites to the International Equine Gene Map half-sibling reference families and by combining genotype data from ...three independent mapping resources: a full sibling family created at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket, United Kingdom, eight half-sibling families from Sweden and two half-sibling families from the University of California, Davis. Because the combined data were derived primarily from half-sibling families, only autosomal markers were analyzed. The map was constructed from a total of 766 markers distributed on the 31 equine chromosomes. It has a higher marker density than that of previously reported maps, with 626 markers linearly ordered and 140 other markers assigned to a chromosomal region. Fifty-nine markers (7%) failed to meet the criteria for statistical evidence of linkage and remain unassigned. The map spans 3,740 cM with an average distance of 6.3 cM between markers. Fifty-five percent of the intervals are < or = 5 cM and only 3% > or = 20 cM. The present map demonstrates the cohesiveness of the different data sets and provides a single resource for genome scan analyses and integration with the radiation hybrid map.
The protein‐coding region of melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) was sequenced to identify potential variation affecting coat color in reindeer (Rangifer tarandus). A T→C sequence variation at nucleotide ...position 218 (c.218T>C) causing an amino acid (aa) change from methionine to threonine at aa position 73 (p.Met73Thr) was identified. In addition, a T→G sequence variation was found at nucleotide position 839 (c.839T>G), causing phenylalanine to be exchanged by cysteine at aa position 280 (p.Phe280Cys). The two sequence variants (c.218C and c.839G) were found to be closely associated with a darker belly coat compared with animals not having any of these two variants. The aa acid change p.Met73Thr affects the same position as p.Met73Lys previously reported to give constitutive activation of MC1R in black sheep (Ovis aries), whereas p.Phe280Cys is identical to one of two variants previously reported to be associated with dark coat color in Arctic fox (Alopex lagopus), supporting that the two variants found in reindeer are functional. The complete absence of Thr73 and Cys280 among the 51 wild reindeer analyzed provides some evidence that these variants are more common in the domestic herds.
Genetic polymorphism at Mhc class II DRB loci was investigated in samples of musk-ox from Canada and Greenland; moose from Sweden, Norway, Canada, and Alaska, roe deer from Norway and Sweden; ...reindeer from Svalbard and Norway; fallow deer from Norway and Sweden; and red deer from Norway. The results were compared with published data on cattle, bison, goal, sheep, and red deer. Cattle-specific primers amplified a single DRB locus in all species except fallow deer and red deer, in which two loci were found. Single strand conformation polymorphism analysis and DNA sequence analysis were employed to detect genetic polymorphism. Complete monomorphism was found in musk-ox and fallow deer. Limited polymorphism was found in the moose, roe deer, and reindeer from Svalbard, whereas intermediate to extensive DRB diversity was present in reindeer from Norway and in bison, sheep, goat, cattle, and red deer. The restricted Mhc diversity in moose, roe deer, and fallow deer is notable in relation to the dramatic population expansion of moose and roe deer in Sweden during this century and since fallow deer is used for meat and game production with good results and without any marked disease problems. The results question the view that species or populations with restricted Mhc diversity have poor resistance to infectious diseases. A phylogenelic tree analysis revealed a clustering of DRB sequences within species rather than within allelic lineages across species. The results suggest trans-species persistence of polymorphic sequence motifs rather than of allelic lineages.

Dynamic laryngeal collapse (DLC) associated with poll flexion is the most common disorder of the upper respiratory tract (URT) in the Norwegian‐Swedish Coldblooded Trotter (NSCT). ...The disorder, which has also been diagnosed in other breeds of trotters and gaited horses, appears to be related to anatomic phenotypes and only occurs during poll flexion when the horse is exercised ‘on the bit’.
Objectives
Identify genomic regions associated with DLC in the NSCT by combining a rigorous phenotyping protocol with genomic data from a high‐density equine genotyping array.
Study design
Prospective case/control study.
Methods
High‐speed treadmill endoscopy was used to phenotype horses (n = 61) for DLC, distinguishing between cases and controls. Genome‐wide association (GWA) analysis of DLC status was then performed using a principal component approach (PCA) with haplotype analyses subsequently performed for regions containing single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) above the suggestive genome‐wide significance (GWS) threshold (P<1.0 × 10−5).
Results
One region containing 10 SNPs (Equus caballus chromosome ECA 7: 89,601,935–94,647,192) was above the suggestive GWS threshold. Two inferred haplotypes in this region demonstrated significant differences (P<0.001) between cases and controls, with the most frequent haplotype resulting in a significantly increased risk of DLC.

Small sample size as a result of stringent phenotyping protocols.
Conclusions
The current study highlights a candidate genomic region on ECA7 as potentially important with regard to the manifestation of DLC. Further exploration of this region and the genes included within it will bring veterinarians and researchers closer to fully understanding the biological mechanisms underlying DLC in horses.
This paper describes how fault injection has been implemented as a test method for an FPGA in an existing hardware configuration setup. As this FPGA is in charge of data readout for a large tracking ...detector, the reliability of this FPGA is of high importance. Due to the complexity of the readout electronics, irradiation testing is technically difficult at this stage of the system commissioning. The work presented in this paper is therefore motivated by introducing fault injection as an alternative method to characterize failures caused by SEUs. It is a method to study the effect that a configuration upset may have on the operation of the FPGA.
The target platform consists of two independent modules for data acquisition and detector control functionality. Fault injection to test the response of the data acquisition module is made possible by implementing the solution as part of the detector control functionality.
Correct implementation is validated by a simple shift register design. Our results demonstrate that fault injection can assist in measuring the effect of an implemented mitigation technique in the final design of the FPGA.
