We review recent theoretical and experimental progress on the role of two-photon exchange (TPE) in electron–proton scattering at low to moderate momentum transfers. We make a detailed comparison and ...analysis of the results of competing experiments on the ratio of e+p to e−p elastic scattering cross sections, and of the theoretical calculations describing them. A summary of the current experimental situation is provided, along with an outlook for future experiments.
This is a consensus statement from an international group, mostly of clinical endocrinologists. MEN1 and MEN2 are hereditary cancer syndromes. The commonest tumors secrete PTH or gastrin in MEN1, and ...calcitonin or catecholamines in MEN2. Management strategies improved after the discoveries of their genes. MEN1 has no clear syndromic variants. Tumor monitoring in MEN1 carriers includes biochemical tests yearly and imaging tests less often. Neck surgery includes subtotal or total parathyroidectomy, parathyroid cryopreservation, and thymectomy. Proton pump inhibitors or somatostatin analogs are the main management for oversecretion of entero-pancreatic hormones, except insulin. The roles for surgery of most entero-pancreatic tumors present several controversies: exclusion of most operations on gastrinomas and indications for surgery on other tumors. Each MEN1 family probably has an inactivating MEN1 germline mutation. Testing for a germline MEN1 mutation gives useful information, but rarely mandates an intervention. The most distinctive MEN2 variants are MEN2A, MEN2B, and familial medullary thyroid cancer (MTC). They vary in aggressiveness of MTC and spectrum of disturbed organs. Mortality in MEN2 is greater from MTC than from pheochromocytoma. Thyroidectomy, during childhood if possible, is the goal in all MEN2 carriers to prevent or cure MTC. Each MEN2 index case probably has an activating germline RET mutation. RET testing has replaced calcitonin testing to diagnose the MEN2 carrier state. The specific RET codon mutation correlates with the MEN2 syndromic variant, the age of onset of MTC, and the aggressiveness of MTC; consequently, that mutation should guide major management decisions, such as whether and when to perform thyroidectomy.

This paper describes the Hall B beamline and its performance during the first year of data-taking operation using the CLAS12 detector. We review the beamline instrumentation used to measure and ...monitor the beam. This instrumentation led to excellent beam quality for energies ranging from 2.2 to 10.6 GeV at the design luminosity of 1035 cm−2s−1. The instrumentation includes a Møller polarimeter, which can typically measure the beam polarization to an absolute precision of ∼2.5%.
Background COPD is a major cause of all-cause mortality. We examined predictors of 1-year mortality in patients with severe COPD and major depression after inpatient treatment in a rehabilitation ...hospital. Methods We screened 898 consecutively admitted patients. Of these, 138 patients received the diagnoses of COPD according to American Thoracic Society Guidelines and major depression by Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition and signed consent; 67 were randomized to a treatment adherence enhancement intervention and 71 to usual care. We assessed history of falls, dyspnea-related disability, severity of depression, medical burden, and cognitive functioning. Following discharge from inpatient rehabilitation, participants were prospectively followed, and mortality was ascertained over 52 weeks from hospital notes and reports of primary care physicians and relatives. Results One-year, all-cause mortality was 22% (31 of 138). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that history of falls in the 6 months preceding hospital admission was the strongest predictor of mortality (OR, 3.05; 95% CI, 1.40-6.66; P < .005). Dyspnea during activities (Pulmonary Functional Status and Dyspnea Questionnaire-Modified domain) was also associated with mortality (OR, 1.05; 95% CI, 1.02-1.08; P < .002). Depression severity, medical burden, and cognitive impairment were not predictors of mortality. Conclusions Recent falls and dyspnea during activities identify subgroups of depressed patients with COPD at increased risk for all-cause mortality. These subgroups are in need of clinical attention and follow-up and can serve as targets for prevention research aiming to inform clinical strategies and public health planning.
We present the first measurement of the timelike Compton scattering process, γp→p^{'}γ^{*}(γ^{*}→e^{+}e^{-}), obtained with the CLAS12 detector at Jefferson Lab. The photon beam polarization and the ...decay lepton angular asymmetries are reported in the range of timelike photon virtualities 2.25<Q^{'2}<9 GeV^{2}, squared momentum transferred 0.1<-t<0.8 GeV^{2}, and average total center-of-mass energy squared s=14.5 GeV^{2}. The photon beam polarization asymmetry, similar to the beam-spin asymmetry in deep virtual Compton scattering, is sensitive to the imaginary part of the Compton form factors and provides a way to test the universality of the generalized parton distributions. The angular asymmetry of the decay leptons accesses the real part of the Compton form factors and thus the D-term in the parametrization of the generalized parton distributions.
We present the results of our final analysis of the full data set of g(1)(p) (Q(2)), the spin structure function of the proton, collected using CLAS at Jefferson Laboratory in 2000-2001. Polarized ...electrons with energies of 1.6, 2.5, 4.2, and 5.7 GeV were scattered from proton targets ((NH3)-N-15 dynamically polarized along the beam direction) and detected with CLAS. From the measured double spin asymmetries, we extracted virtual photon asymmetries A(1)(p) and A(2)(p) and spin structure functions g(1)(p) and g(2)(p) over a wide kinematic range (0.05 GeV2 < Q(2) < 5 GeV2 and 1.08 GeV< W < 3 GeV) and calculated moments of g(1)(p). We compare our final results with various theoretical models and expectations, as well as with parametrizations of the world data. Our data, with their precision and dense kinematic coverage, are able to constrain fits of polarized parton distributions, test pQCD predictions for quark polarizations at large x, offer a better understanding of quark-hadron duality, and provide more precise values of higher twist matrix elements in the framework of the operator product expansion.
This paper reports new exclusive cross sections for $e p \to e' \pi^+ \pi^- p'$ using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory. These results are presented for the first time at photon virtualities ...2.0 GeV2 < Q2 < 5.0 GeV2 in the center-of-mass energy range 1.4 GeV < W < 2.0 GeV, which covers a large part of the nucleon resonance region. Using a model developed for the phenomenological analysis of electroproduction data, we see strong indications that the relative contributions from the resonant cross sections at W < 1.74 GeV increase with $Q^2$. These data considerably extend the kinematic reach of previous measurements. Exclusive $e p \to e' \pi^+ \pi^- p'$ cross section measurements are of particular importance for the extraction of resonance electrocouplings in the mass range above 1.6 GeV.
The observation of beam spin asymmetries in two-pion production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off an unpolarized proton target is reported. The data presented here were taken in the ...fall of 2018 with the CLAS12 spectrometer using a 10.6 GeV longitudinally spin-polarized electron beam delivered by CEBAF at JLab. The measured asymmetries provide the first opportunity to extract the parton distribution function e(x), which provides information about the interaction between gluons and quarks, in a collinear framework that offers cleaner access than previous measurements. The asymmetries also constitute the first ever signal sensitive to the helicity-dependent two-pion fragmentation function G_{1}^{⊥}. A clear sign change is observed around the ρ mass that appears in model calculations and is indicative of the dependence of the produced pions on the helicity of the fragmenting quark.
Unpolarized and beam-polarized fourfold cross sections (d^{4}σ/dQ^{2}dx_{B}dtdϕ) for the ep→e^{'}p^{'}γ reaction were measured using the CLAS detector and the 5.75-GeV polarized electron beam of the ...Jefferson Lab accelerator, for 110 (Q^{2},x_{B},t) bins over the widest phase space ever explored in the valence-quark region. Several models of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) describe the data well at most of our kinematics. This increases our confidence that we understand the GPD H, expected to be the dominant contributor to these observables. Through a leading-twist extraction of Compton form factors, these results support the model predictions of a larger nucleon size at lower quark-momentum fraction x_{B}.
