While the lasting effects of colonial legacy are explored in great detail in French spaces ranging from the refugee camp to the Latin Quarter's publishing industry, a future project might take more ...of an Africanist turn-closer to the subject of Thomas's first book, Nation-Building, Propaganda, and Literature in Francophone Africa (Indiana University Press, 2002)-by investigating those effects in African contexts. Changing forms of neocolonialism, neoliberalism, policies of "development" and "aid," and military interventionism are all areas from which one could study the social, political, and cultural consequences of the evolving-and, many would argue, declining-role of France in its historic pré carré or backyard, from the point of view of people living on the African continent.
