The self-care of type 1 diabetes (T1D) includes undergoing procedures with needles several times daily, which may cause pain and fear.
The aim was to identify the degree of perceived pain, affective ...reactions, fear, and emotional coping among children and adolescents with T1D.
A cross-sectional survey was performed.
Children and adolescents 7-18 years of age (n = 197) and their parents (n = 123) completed the Coloured Analogue Scale (CAS), the Facial Affective Scale (FAS), the Diabetes Fear of Injection Questionnaire (D-FISQ), and the Faces Emotional Coping Scale (FECS) in relation to needle procedures.
The higher the values of the CAS, FAS and D-FISQ scores, the lower values for coping were reported by children and adolescents regarding treatment with insulin pen or pump, blood glucose test, and venipuncture (p < .001). Patients reported strong negative affect regarding insulin injections (35%) and blood glucose tests (32%), as well as negative affect (48%, 69%) and substantial pain (27%, 50%) for inserting a pump needle and venipuncture, respectively. Parents reported significantly higher values than children on all scales and procedures except D-FISQ (blood glucose tests) and FECS (venipuncture).
Children and adolescents who perceive greater pain during needle-related procedures have poorer coping ability. Pediatric diabetes teams need to identify those in need of extra support to develop pain coping strategies.
Osteopenia, osteoporosis, and low bone mineral density are frequent in patients with HIV. We assessed the 96 week loss of bone mineral density associated with a nucleoside or nucleotide reverse ...transcriptase inhibitor (NtRTI)-sparing regimen.
Antiretroviral-naive adults with HIV were enrolled in 78 clinical sites in 15 European countries into a randomised (1:1), open-label, non-inferiority trial (NEAT001/ANRS143) assessing the efficacy and safety of darunavir (800 mg once per day) and ritonavir (100 mg once per day) plus either raltegravir (400 mg twice per day; NtRTI-sparing regimen) or tenofovir (245 mg once per day) and emtricitabine (200 mg once per day; standard regimen). For this bone-health substudy, 20 of the original sites in six countries participated, and any patient enrolled at one of these sites who met the following criteria was eligible: plasma viral loads greater than 1000 HIV RNA copies per mL and CD4 cell counts of fewer than 500 cells per μL, except in those with symptomatic HIV infection. Exclusion criteria included treatment for malignant disease, testing positive for hepatitis B virus surface antigen, pregnancy, creatinine clearance less than 60 mL per min, treatment for osteoporosis, systemic steroids, or oestrogen-replacement therapy. The two primary endpoints were the mean percentage changes in lumbar spine and total hip bone mineral density at week 48, assessed by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans. We did the analysis with an intention-to-treat-exposed approach with antiretroviral modifications ignored. The parent trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01066962, and is closed to new participants.
Between Aug 2, 2010, and April 18, 2011, we recruited 146 patients to the substudy, 70 assigned to the NtRTI-sparing regimen and 76 to the standard regimen. DXA data were available for 129, 121 and 107 patients at baseline, 48 and 96 weeks respectively. At week 48, the mean percentage loss in bone mineral density in the lumbar spine was greater in the standard group than in the NtRTI-sparing group (mean percentage change -2.49% vs -1.00%, mean percentage difference -1.49, 95% CI -2.94 to -0.04; p=0.046). Total hip bone mineral density loss was similarly greater at week 48 in the standard group than in the NtRTI-sparing group (mean percentage change -3.30% vs -0.73%; mean percentage difference -2.57, 95% CI -3.75 to -1.35; p<0.0001). Seven new fractures occurred during the trial (two in the NtRTI-sparing group and five in the standard group).
A raltegravir-based regimen was associated with significantly less loss of bone mineral density than a standard regimen containing tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, and might be a treatment option for patients at high risk of osteopenia or osteoporosis who are not suitable for NtRTIs such as abacavir or tenofovir alafenamide.

In the present study, we characterize a novel zebrafish mutant of solute carrier 18A2 (slc18a2), also known as vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (vmat2), that exhibits a behavioural phenotype ...partially consistent with human Parkinson´s disease. At six days-post-fertilization, behaviour was analysed and demonstrated that vmat2 homozygous mutant larvae, relative to wild types, show changes in motility in a photomotor assay, altered sleep parameters, and reduced dopamine cell number. Following an abrupt lights-off stimulus mutant larvae initiate larger movements but subsequently inhibit them to a lesser extent in comparison to wild-type larvae. Conversely, during a lights-on period, the mutant larvae are hypomotile. Thigmotaxis, a preference to avoid the centre of a behavioural arena, was increased in homozygotes over heterozygotes and wild types, as was daytime sleep ratio. Furthermore, incubating mutant larvae in pramipexole or L-Dopa partially rescued the motor phenotypes, as did injecting glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) into their brains. This novel vmat2 model represents a tool for high throughput pharmaceutical screens for novel therapeutics, in particular those that increase monoamine transport, and for studies of the function of monoamine transporters.
Little research exists on how children understand the actions of nonhuman agents. Researchers often assume that children overgeneralize and attribute human properties such as false beliefs to ...nonhuman agents. In this study, three experiments were conducted to test this assumption. The experiments used 24 children in New York (aged 2,11-6,11 years), 52 children in Michigan (aged 3,5-6,11 years), and a second group of 45 children in Michigan (3,4-8,5 years) from Christian backgrounds. In the first two experiments, children participated in false-belief tests in which they were asked about human and various nonhuman agents including animals and God. Experiment 3 consisted of a modified perspective-taking task, also including nonhuman agents. The results of the study suggest that children do not consistently use human agent concepts but instead can use different agent concepts for some nonhuman agents like God and special animals. Children are not bound to anthropomorphize, but they often do.

BACKGROUND
Youth in the United States have low levels of cardiorespiratory fitness, a risk factor for childhood obesity. Lower levels of physical fitness for black and Hispanic youth ...contribute to health disparities. In this feasibility study, we examined active video games (AVGs) as a tool to improve fitness and attitudes toward physical activity during early adolescence.
METHOD
A 6‐week AVG program took place in a youth development program in a high‐poverty neighborhood in New York City. Youth aged 10 to 15 years (50% overweight or obese) participated in 2 fitness tests and completed surveys that captured barriers to physical activity pre‐ and postintervention. Each week, participants played Wii Fit games for 30 minutes.
RESULTS
Participants improved the number of sit‐ups and step‐ups they completed from pre‐ to postintervention (p < .05). Participants also increased their self‐efficacy, intention to exercise and perceived social support to exercise (p < .05). Youth reported a high level of enjoyment and perceived Wii Fit as ways to increase physical fitness and increase their physical activity.
CONCLUSION
AVGs may be a viable alternative exercise program to increase physical activity for black and Hispanic youth living in poverty‐impacted neighborhoods.
A series of donor–chromophore–acceptor–stable radical (D–C–A–R•) molecules having well-defined molecular structures were synthesized to study the factors affecting electron spin polarization transfer ...from the photogenerated D+•–C–A–• spin-correlated radical pair (RP) to the stable radical R•. Theory suggests that the magnitude of this transfer depends on the spin–spin exchange interaction (2J DA) of D+•–C–A–•. Yet, the generality of this prediction has never been demonstrated. In the D–C–A–R• molecules described herein, D is 4-methoxyaniline (MeOAn), 2,3-dihydro-1,4-benzodioxin-6-amine (DioxAn), or benzobisdioxole aniline (BDXAn), C is 4-aminonaphthalene-1,8-dicarboximide, and A is naphthalene-1,8:4,5-bis(dicarboximide) (1A,B–3A,B) or pyromellitimide (4A,B–6A,B). The terminal imide of the acceptors is functionalized with either a hydrocarbon (1A–6A) or a 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxyl radical (R•) (1B–6B). Photoexcitation of C with 416-nm laser pulses results in two-step charge separation to yield D+•–C–A–•–(R•). Time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) spectroscopy using continuous-wave (CW) microwaves at both 295 and 85 K and pulsed microwaves at 85 K (electron spin–echo detection) was used to probe the initial formation of the spin-polarized RP and the subsequent polarization of the attached R• radical. The TREPR spectra show that |2J DA| for D+•–C–A–• decreases in the order MeOAn+• > DioxAn+• > BDXAn+• as a result of their spin density distributions, whereas the spin–spin dipolar interaction (d DA) remains nearly constant. Given this systematic variation in |2J DA|, electron spin–echo-detected EPR spectra of 1B–6B at 85 K show that the magnitude of the spin polarization transferred from the RP to R• depends on |2J DA|.
In a much-cited paper, Armand and coworkers showed that lithium bistrifluoromethyl sulfonylimide (LiTFSI) and other salts dissolve in the well-known plastic crystal, succinonitrile, (CN-CH2-CH2-CN) ...to give a highly conducting solid solution which they proposed as a novel approach to lithium electrolyte solid state battery technology. Although succinonitrile has been much studied as a molecular rotator phase, there was no direct reference made to its reorientational motion in their paper. In a previous paper we have shown that the time scale for magnetic fluctuations and reorientational relaxation times in dinitrile solvent mixtures (which can be studied over wide temperature and relaxation time ranges) are in close correspondence. Here we use this finding to study the relation between conductivity relaxation times of the LiTFSI solutions and the reorientation times of the solvent molecules. We find that, while the solvent molecule reorientation times accord well with the conductivity relaxation time, the lithium ion is in an environment that fluctuates more slowly. Unfortunately, this will lead to concentration polarization problems in any electrochemical device application. Ways to avoid this problem while maintaining the plastic crystal advantage are suggested. (184)

Randomised Clinical Trial.
This is the body composition substudy of NEAT 001/ANRS 143, a randomised trial comparing darunavir/ritonavir (DRV/r) plus either raltegravir (RAL) or tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine (TDF/FTC) in 805 ART naïve HIV-infected adults. The primary endpoint was percentage change in limb fat at week 96. Secondary endpoints were associations among these changes and metabolic markers (IL-6, insulin, leptin, adiponectin, FGF-23).
126 subjects (61 DRV/r + RAL and 65 DRV/r + TDF/FTC) were included. The rate of change in BMI between groups for RAL versus TDF/FTC at week 96 was 1.5% per 48-week period (p = 0.015). The rate of change in limb fat mass, trunk fat mass, total body fat and total lean mass was for RAL versus TDF/FTC at week 96 was 2.5% (p = 0.38), 7.3% ((p = 0.021), 4.9% (p = 0.061) and 1.3% (p = 0.12) respectively. Baseline insulin and leptin levels were correlated with baseline limb fat and trunk fat mass r = 0.31 (p = 0.0043)/r = 0.28 (p = 0.0011) for limb fat, and r = 0.63 (p<0.0001)/r = 0.50(p<0.0001) for trunk fat. After adjustment, a 10% faster increase in leptin between baseline and week 48 was associated with a more rapid increase in limb fat at week 48 (0.5% per 48 weeks, p<0.001), total body fat mass (0.6% per 48 weeks, p<0.001), and trunk fat mass (0.3% per 48 weeks, p = 0.0026).
After week 96 a N(t)RTI sparing regimen of DRV/r + RAL produced a numerically greater percentage increase in body composition variables with only change in trunk fat mass and BMI being significant.
The Developing Belief Network is a consortium of researchers studying human development in diverse social-cultural settings, with a focus on the interplay between general cognitive development and ...culturally specific processes of socialization and cultural transmission in early and middle childhood. The current manuscript describes the study protocol for the network's first wave of data collection, which aims to explore the development and diversity of religious cognition and behavior. This work is guided by three key research questions: (1) How do children represent and reason about religious and supernatural agents? (2) How do children represent and reason about religion as an aspect of social identity? (3) How are religious and supernatural beliefs transmitted within and between generations? The protocol is designed to address these questions via a set of nine tasks for children between the ages of 4 and 10 years, a comprehensive survey completed by their parents/caregivers, and a task designed to elicit conversations between children and caregivers. This study is being conducted in 39 distinct cultural-religious groups (to date), spanning 17 countries and 13 languages. In this manuscript, we provide detailed descriptions of all elements of this study protocol, give a brief overview of the ways in which this protocol has been adapted for use in diverse religious communities, and present the final, English-language study materials for 6 of the 39 cultural-religious groups who are currently being recruited for this study: Protestant Americans, Catholic Americans, American members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jewish Americans, Muslim Americans, and religiously unaffiliated Americans.
