Rock breakdown due to diurnal thermal cycling has been hypothesized to drive boulder degradation and regolith production on airless bodies. Numerous studies have invoked its importance in driving ...landscape evolution, yet morphological features produced by thermal fracture processes have never been definitively observed on an airless body, or any surface where other weathering mechanisms may be ruled out. The Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) mission provides an opportunity to search for evidence of thermal breakdown and assess its significance on asteroid surfaces. Here we show boulder morphologies observed on Bennu that are consistent with terrestrial observations and models of fatigue-driven exfoliation and demonstrate how crack propagation via thermal stress can lead to their development. The rate and expression of this process will vary with asteroid composition and location, influencing how different bodies evolve and their apparent relative surface ages from space weathering and cratering records.
Asteroid crater retention ages have unknown accuracy because projectile-crater scaling laws are difficult to verify. At the same time, our knowledge of asteroid and crater size-frequency ...distributions has increased substantially over the past few decades. These advances make it possible to empirically derive asteroid crater scaling laws by fitting model asteroid size distributions to crater size distributions from asteroids observed by spacecraft. For D > 10 km diameter asteroids like Ceres, Vesta, Lutetia, Mathilde, Ida, Eros, and Gaspra, the best matches occur when the ratio of crater to projectile sizes is f ∼ 10. The same scaling law applied to 0.3 < D < 2.5 km near-Earth asteroids such as Bennu, Ryugu, Itokawa, and Toutatis yield intriguing yet perplexing results. When applied to the largest craters on these asteroids, we obtain crater retention ages of ∼1 billion years for Bennu, Ryugu, and Itokawa and ∼2.5 billion years for Toutatis. These ages agree with the estimated formation ages of their source families and could suggest that the near-Earth asteroid population is dominated by bodies that avoided disruption during their traverse across the main asteroid belt. An alternative interpretation is that f > 10, which would make their crater retention ages much younger. If true, crater scaling laws need to change in a substantial way between D > 10 km asteroids, where f ∼ 10, and 0.3 < D < 2.5 km asteroids, where f > 10.
•Noise was reduced with TF compared to ASiR-V while maintaining FBP-like noise texture, leading to sharper image appearance.•Low contrast lesion detectability (AUC) was always higher with TF than ...ASIR-V at 60 %.•TrueFidelity at high strength enabled an estimated radiation dose reduction of 33 % without impairing lesion detectability.
To compare deep learning (True Fidelity, TF) and partial model based Iterative Reconstruction (ASiR-V) algorithm for image texture, low contrast lesion detectability and potential dose reduction.
Anthropomorphic phantoms (mimicking non-overweight and overweight patient), containing lesions of 6 mm in diameter with 20HU contrast, were scanned at five different dose levels (2,6,10,15,20 mGy) on a CT system, using clinical routine protocols for liver lesion detection. Images were reconstructed using ASiR-V 0% (surrogate for FBP), 60 % and TF at low, medium and high strength. Noise texture was characterized by computing a normalized Noise Power Spectrum filtered by an eye filter. The similarity against FBP texture was evaluated using peak frequency difference (PFD) and root mean square deviation (RMSD). Low contrast detectability was assessed using a channelized Hotelling observer and the area under the ROC curve (AUC) was used as figure of merit. Potential dose reduction was calculated to obtain the same AUC for TF and ASiR-V.
FBP-like noise texture was more preserved with TF (PFD from -0.043mm-1 to -0.09mm-1, RMSD from 0.12mm-1 to 0.21mm-1) than with ASiR-V (PFD equal to 0.12 mm-1, RMSD equal to 0.53mm-1), resulting in a sharper image. AUC was always higher with TF than ASIR-V. In average, TF compared to ASiR-V, enabled a radiation dose reduction potential of 7%, 25 % and 33 % for low, medium and high strength respectively.
Compared to ASIR-V, TF at high strength does not impact noise texture and maintains low contrast liver lesions detectability at significant lower dose.
The OSIRIS-REx Camera Suite (OCAMS) onboard the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft is used to study the shape and surface of the mission’s target, asteroid (101955) Bennu, in support of the selection of a ...sampling site. We present calibration methods and results for the three OCAMS cameras—MapCam, PolyCam, and SamCam—using data from pre-flight and in-flight calibration campaigns. Pre-flight calibrations established a baseline for a variety of camera properties, including bias and dark behavior, flat fields, stray light, and radiometric calibration. In-flight activities updated these calibrations where possible, allowing us to confidently measure Bennu’s surface. Accurate calibration is critical not only for establishing a global understanding of Bennu, but also for enabling analyses of potential sampling locations and for providing scientific context for the returned sample.
The mandate of folic acid supplementation in grained products has reduced the occurrence of neural tube defects by one third in the U.S since its introduction by the Food and Drug Administration in ...1998. However, the advantages and possible mechanisms of action of using folic acid for peripheral nerve engineering and neurological diseases still remain largely elusive. Herein, folic acid is described as an inexpensive and multifunctional niche component that modulates behaviors in different cells in the nervous system. The multiple benefits of modulation include: 1) generating chemotactic responses on glial cells, 2) inducing neurotrophin release, and 3) stimulating neuronal differentiation of a PC-12 cell system. For the first time, folic acid is also shown to enhance cellular force generation and global methylation in the PC-12 cells, thereby enabling both biomechanical and biochemical pathways to regulate neuron differentiation. These findings are evaluated in vivo for clinical translation. Our results suggest that folic acid-nerve guidance conduits may offer significant benefits as a low-cost, off-the-shelf product for reaching the functional recovery seen with autografts in large sciatic nerve defects. Consequently, folic acid holds great potential as a critical and convenient therapeutic intervention for neural engineering, regenerative medicine, medical prosthetics, and drug delivery.
Radiation is utilized in the therapy of more than 50% of cancer patients. Unfortunately, many malignancies become resistant to radiation over time. We investigated the hypothesis that one method of a ...cancer cell's ability to survive radiation occurs through cellular communication via exosomes. Exosomes are cell-derived vesicles containing DNA, RNA, and protein. Three properties were analyzed: 1) exosome function, 2) exosome profile and 3) exosome uptake/blockade. To analyze exosome function, we show radiation-derived exosomes increased proliferation and enabled recipient cancer cells to survive radiation
. Furthermore, radiation-derived exosomes increased tumor burden and decreased survival in an
model. To address the mechanism underlying the alterations by exosomes in recipient cells, we obtained a profile of radiation-derived exosomes that showed expression changes favoring a resistant/proliferative profile. Radiation-derived exosomes contain elevated oncogenic miR-889, oncogenic mRNAs, and proteins of the proteasome pathway, Notch, Jak-STAT, and cell cycle pathways. Radiation-derived exosomes contain decreased levels of tumor-suppressive miR-516, miR-365, and multiple tumor-suppressive mRNAs. Ingenuity pathway analysis revealed the most represented networks included cell cycle, growth/survival. Upregulation of DNM2 correlated with increased exosome uptake. To analyze the property of exosome blockade, heparin and simvastatin were used to inhibit uptake of exosomes in recipient cells resulting in inhibited induction of proliferation and cellular survival. Because these agents have shown some success as cancer therapies, our data suggest their mechanism of action could be limiting exosome communication between cells. The results of our study identify a novel exosome-based mechanism that may underlie a cancer cell's ability to survive radiation.
Two of the instruments onboard the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft, the MapCam color imager and the OVIRS visible and 20 infrared spectrometer, observed the surface of asteroid (101955) Bennu in partially ...overlapping wavelengths. 21 Significant scientific advances have been enabled by using data from these two instruments in tandem, but a robust 22 statistical understanding of their relationship is needed for future analyses to cross-compare their data as accurately 23 and sensitively as possible. Here we present a cross-instrument comparison of data acquired by MapCam and 24 OVIRS, including methods and results for all global and site-specific observation campaigns in which both 25 instruments were active. In our analysis, we consider both the absolute radiometric offset and the relative 26 (normalized) variation between the two instruments; we find that both depend strongly on the photometric and 27 instrumental conditions during the observation. The two instruments have a large absolute offset (>15%) due to their 28 independent radiometric calibrations. However, they are very consistent (relative offset as low as 1%) when each 29 instrument’s response is normalized at a single wavelength, particularly at low phase angles where shadows on 30 Bennu’s rough surface are minimized. We recommend using the global datasets acquired at 12:30 pm local solar 31 time for cross-comparisons; data acquired at higher phase angles have larger uncertainties.
Objective
To determine a personalized and optimized contrast injection protocol for a uniform and optimal diagnostic level of liver parenchymal enhancement, in a large patient population enrolled in ...a multicenter study.
Methods
Six hundred ninety-two patients who underwent a standardized multi-phase liver CT examination were prospectively assigned to one contrast media (CM) protocol group: G1 (100 mL fixed volume, 37 gI); G2 (600 mgI/kg of total body weight (TBW)); G3 (750 mgI/kg of fat-free mass (FFM)), and G4 (600 mgI/kg of FFM). Change in liver parenchyma CT number between unenhanced and contrast-enhanced images was measured by two radiologists, on 3-mm pre-contrast and portal phase axial reconstructions. The enhancement histograms were compared across CM protocols, specifically according to a target diagnostic value of 50 HU. The total amount of iodine dose was also compared among protocols by median and interquartile range (IQR). The Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney
U
tests were used to assess significant differences (
p
< 0.005), as appropriate.
Results
A significant difference (
p
< 0.001) was found across the groups with liver enhancement decreasing from median over-enhanced values of 77.0 (G1), 71.3 (G2), and 65.1 (G3) to a target enhancement of 53.2 HU for G4. Enhancement IQR was progressively reduced from 26.5 HU (G1), 26.0 HU (G2), and 17.8 HU (G3) to 14.5 HU (G4). G4 showed a median iodine dose of 26.0 gI, significantly lower (
p
< 0.001) than G3 (33.9 gI), G2 (38.8 gI), and G1 (37 gI).
Conclusions
The 600 mgI/kg FFM-based protocol enabled a diagnostically optimized liver enhancement and improved patient-to-patient enhancement uniformity, while significantly reducing iodine load.

A large annotated adult knee MRI database was built combining medical expertise of radiologists and data scientists’ tools. Coronal and sagittal proton density fat suppressed-weighted images of 11,353 knee MRI examinations (10,401 individual patients) paired with their standardized structured reports were retrospectively collected. After database curation, deep learning models were trained and validated on a subset of 8058 examinations. Algorithm performance was evaluated on a test set of 299 examinations reviewed by 5 musculoskeletal specialists and compared to general radiologists’ reports. External validation was performed using the publicly available MRNet database. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves results and Area Under the Curve (AUC) values were obtained on internal and external databases.
A combined architecture of meniscal localization and lesion classification 3D convolutional neural networks reached AUC values of 0.93 (95% CI 0.82, 0.95) for medial and 0.84 (95% CI 0.78, 0.89) for lateral meniscal tear detection, and 0.91 (95% CI 0.87, 0.94) for medial and 0.95 (95% CI 0.92, 0.97) for lateral meniscal tear migration detection. External validation of the combined medial and lateral meniscal tear detection models resulted in an AUC of 0.83 (95% CI 0.75, 0.90) without further training and 0.89 (95% CI 0.82, 0.95) with fine tuning.

Tissue adhesives play an important role in surgery to close wounds, seal tissues, and stop bleeding, but existing adhesives are costly, cytotoxic, or bond weakly to tissue. Inspired by the ...water-resistant adhesion of plant-derived tannins, we herein report a new family of bioadhesives derived from a facile, one-step Michael addition of tannic acid and gelatin under oxidizing conditions and crosslinked by silver nitrate. The oxidized polyphenol groups of tannic acid enable wet tissue adhesion through catecholamine-like chemistry, while both tannic acid and silver nanoparticles reduced from silver nitrate provide antimicrobial sources inherent within the polymeric network. These tannin-inspired gelatin bioadhesives are low-cost and readily scalable and eliminate the concerns of potential neurological effect brought by mussel-inspired strategy due to the inclusion of dopamine; variations in gelatin source (fish, bovine, or porcine) and tannic acid feeding ratios resulted in tunable gelation times (36 s-8 min), controllable degradation (up to 100% degradation within a month), considerable wet tissue adhesion strengths (up to 3.7 times to that of fibrin glue), excellent cytocompatibility, as well as antibacterial and antifungal properties. The innate properties of tannic acid as a natural phenolic crosslinker, molecular glue, and antimicrobial agent warrant a unique and significant approach to bioadhesive design.
This manuscript describes the development of a new family of tannin-inspired antimicrobial bioadhesives derived from a facile, one-step Michael addition of tannic acid and gelatin under oxidizing conditions and crosslinked by silver nitrate. Our strategy is new and can be easily extended to other polymer systems, low-cost and readily scalable, and eliminate the concerns of potential neurological effect brought by mussel-inspired strategy due to the inclusion of dopamine. The tannin-inspired gelatin bioadhesives hold great promise for a number of applications in wound closure, tissue sealant, hemostasis, antimicrobial and cell/drug delivery, and would be interested to the readers from biomaterials, tissue engineering, and drug delivery area.
