Because of their long lifetimes, the ω and ϕ mesons are the ideal candidates for the study of possible modifications of the in-medium meson-nucleon interaction through their absorption inside the ...nucleus. During the E01-112 experiment at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, the mesons were photoproduced from 2H, C, Ti, Fe, and Pb targets. This Letter reports the first measurement of the ratio of nuclear transparencies for the e+e- channel. The ratios indicate larger in-medium widths compared with what have been reported in other reaction channels. The absorption of the ω meson is stronger than that reported by the CBELSA-TAPS experiment and cannot be explained by recent theoretical models.
We present the results of our final analysis of the full data set of g(1)(p) (Q(2)), the spin structure function of the proton, collected using CLAS at Jefferson Laboratory in 2000-2001. Polarized ...electrons with energies of 1.6, 2.5, 4.2, and 5.7 GeV were scattered from proton targets ((NH3)-N-15 dynamically polarized along the beam direction) and detected with CLAS. From the measured double spin asymmetries, we extracted virtual photon asymmetries A(1)(p) and A(2)(p) and spin structure functions g(1)(p) and g(2)(p) over a wide kinematic range (0.05 GeV2 < Q(2) < 5 GeV2 and 1.08 GeV< W < 3 GeV) and calculated moments of g(1)(p). We compare our final results with various theoretical models and expectations, as well as with parametrizations of the world data. Our data, with their precision and dense kinematic coverage, are able to constrain fits of polarized parton distributions, test pQCD predictions for quark polarizations at large x, offer a better understanding of quark-hadron duality, and provide more precise values of higher twist matrix elements in the framework of the operator product expansion.
In this work, we report on the measurement of the beam asymmetry $\Sigma$ for the reactions $\vec{\gamma}p\rightarrow p\eta$ and $\vec{\gamma}p \rightarrow p\eta^{\prime}$ from the GlueX experiment, ...using an 8.2–8.8-GeV linearly polarized tagged photon beam incident on a liquid hydrogen target in Hall D at Jefferson Lab. These measurements are made as a function of momentum transfer $-t$, with significantly higher statistical precision than our earlier $\eta$ measurements, and are the first measurements of $\eta^{\prime}$ in this energy range. We compare the results to theoretical predictions based on $t$--channel quasi-particle exchange. Furthermore, we compare the ratio of $\Sigma_{\eta}$ to $\Sigma_{\eta^{\prime}}$ to these models, as this ratio is predicted to be sensitive to the amount of $s\bar{s}$ exchange in the production. We find that photoproduction of both $\eta$ and $\eta^{\prime}$ is dominated by natural parity exchange with little dependence on $-t$.
The strong nuclear interaction is probed at short-distance and high-momenta using new measurements of the $^{12}$C$(e,e'p)$ and $^{12}$C$(e,e'pn)$ reactions, at high-$Q^2$ and $x_B>1$. The data span ...a missing-momentum range of 300-850 MeV/c and is predominantly sensitive to the dominant proton-neutron short-range correlated (SRC) pairs and complements previous $^{12}$C$(e,e'pp)$ measurements. The data are well reproduced by theoretical calculations using the Generalized Contact Formalism with both chiral and phenomenological nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) interaction models. This agreement, observed here for the first time, suggests that the measured high missing-momentum protons up to $850$ MeV/c belonged to SRC pairs. The measured $^{12}$C$(e,e'pn)$ / $^{12}$C$(e,e'p)$ ratio is consistent with a decrease in the fraction of proton-neutron SRC pairs with increasing missing-momentum. This confirms the transition from an isospin-dependent tensor $NN$ interaction at $\sim 400$ MeV/c to an isospin-independent scalar interaction at high-momentum around $\sim 800$ MeV/c.
The research field on thermochemical energy storage (TCS) has shown consistent growth over the last decade. This study analysed over 1196 scientific publications in indexed journals and books from ...the last decades. What can we learn from analysing the evolution of research? There is no other study that has used bibliometrics to perform a detailed analysis of the TCS field, which has only been assessed from the perspective of the whole thermal energy storage field to date. The trends obtained in this study provide an important perspective of the field, indicating the strengths and weaknesses of the thermochemical materials and systems applied to energy storage. The main publication trend shows an exceptional increase in TCS research and in both defined research sub-areas (sorption and chemical reaction heat storage). The sub-category chemical reaction heat storage has fewer publications compared to sorption heat storage, indicating that it is a less explored field. In general, the evolution of the keywords in publications reflects technology maturity since the most recent terms are associated more with final use applications. Remarkably, there has been a change from a total dependence on funding for scientific output to a scenario in which a significant number of publications mention no specific funding, but this trend has changed in recent years.
Background: The electromagnetic form factors of the proton measured by unpolarized and polarized electron scattering experiments show a significant disagreement that grows with the squared four ...momentum transfer (Q2). Calculations have shown that the two measurements can be largely reconciled by accounting for the contributions of two-photon exchange (TPE). TPE effects are not typically included in the standard set of radiative corrections since theoretical calculations of the TPE effects are highly model dependent, and, until recently, no direct evidence of significant TPE effects has been observed. Purpose: We measured the ratio of positron-proton to electron-proton elastic-scattering cross sections in order to determine the TPE contribution to elastic electron-proton scattering and thereby resolve the proton electric form factor discrepancy. Methods: We produced a mixed simultaneous electron-positron beam in Jefferson Lab's Hall B by passing the 5.6 GeV primary electron beam through a radiator to produce a bremsstrahlung photon beam and then passing the photon beam through a convertor to produce electron/positron pairs. The mixed electron-positron (lepton) beam with useful energies from approximately 0.85 to 3.5 GeV then struck a 30-cm long liquid hydrogen (LH2) target located within the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). By detecting both the scattered leptons and the recoiling protons we identified and reconstructed elastic scattering events and determined the incident lepton energy. A detailed description of the experiment is presented. Results: We present previously unpublished results for the quantity R2γ, the TPE correction to the elastic- scattering cross section, at Q2 ≈ 0:85 and 1.45 GeV2 over a large range of virtual photon polarization ε. Conclusions: Our results, along with recently published results from VEPP-3, demonstrate a non-zero contribution from TPE effects and are in excellent agreement with the calculations that include TPE effects and largely reconcile the form-factor discrepancy up to Q2 ≈ 2 GeV2. These data are consistent with an increase in R2γ with decreasing " at Q2 ≈ 0:85 and 1.45 GeV2. There are indications of a slight increase in R2γ with Q2.
Surveillance for Haemophilus influenzae meningitis cases was performed in Salvador, Brazil, before and after introduction of H. influenzae type b (Hib) immunization. The incidence of Hib meningitis ...decreased 69% during the 1-year period after initiation of Hib immunization (from 2.62 to 0.81 cases/100,000 person-years; P<.001). In contrast, the incidence for H. influenzae type a meningitis increased 8-fold (from 0.02 to 0.16 cases/100,000 person-years; P=.008). Pulsed-field gel electrophoretic analysis demonstrated that H. influenzae type a isolates belonged to 2 clonally related groups, both of which were found before Hib immunization commenced. Therefore, Hib immunization contributed to an increased risk for H. influenzae type a meningitis through selection of circulating H. influenzae type a clones. The risk attributable to serotype replacement is small in comparison to the large reduction in Hib meningitis due to immunization. However, these findings highlight the need to maintain surveillance as the use of conjugate vaccines expands worldwide

Exclusive π(0) electroproduction at a beam energy of 5.75 GeV has been measured with the Jefferson Lab CLAS spectrometer. Differential cross sections were measured at more than 1800 kinematic values ...in Q(2), x(B), t, and ϕ(π), in the Q(2) range from 1.0 to 4.6 GeV(2), -t up to 2 GeV(2), and x(B) from 0.1 to 0.58. Structure functions σ(T)+ϵσ(L), σ(TT), and σ(LT) were extracted as functions of t for each of 17 combinations of Q(2) and x(B). The data were compared directly with two handbag-based calculations including both longitudinal and transversity generalized parton distributions (GPDs). Inclusion of only longitudinal GPDs very strongly underestimates σ(T)+ϵσ(L) and fails to account for σ(TT) and σ(LT), while inclusion of transversity GPDs brings the calculations into substantially better agreement with the data. There is very strong sensitivity to the relative contributions of nucleon helicity-flip and helicity nonflip processes. The results confirm that exclusive π(0) electroproduction offers direct experimental access to the transversity GPDs.
