The dynamic production scheduling is a very complex process that may arise from the occurrence of unpredictable situations such as the arrival of new orders besides the ones already accepted. As a ...consequence, companies may often encounter several difficulties to make decisions about the new orders acceptance and sequencing along with the production of the existing ones. With this recognition, a mathematical programming model for the regenerative scheduling problem with deterministic processing times is formulated in the present paper to evaluate the economic advantage of accepting a new order in an engineer to order (ETO) manufacturing organization. The real case of an Italian ETO company which produces hydraulic marine and offshore cranes is afterwards presented.
Neovascularization and inflammation are independent biological processes but are linked in response to injury. The role of inflammation-dampening cytokines in the regulation of angiogenesis remains ...to be clarified. The purpose of this work was to test the hypothesis that IL-19 can induce angiogenesis in the absence of tissue hypoxia and to identify potential mechanisms. Using the aortic ring model of angiogenesis, we found significantly reduced sprouting capacity in aortic rings from IL-19(-/-) compared with wild-type mice. Using an in vivo assay, we found that IL-19(-/-) mice respond to vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) significantly less than wild-type mice and demonstrate decreased capillary formation in Matrigel plugs. IL-19 signals through the IL-20 receptor complex, and IL-19 induces IL-20 receptor subunit expression in aortic rings and cultured human vascular smooth muscle cells, but not endothelial cells, in a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ-dependent mechanism. IL-19 activates STAT3, and IL-19 angiogenic activity in aortic rings is STAT3-dependent. Using a quantitative RT-PCR screening assay, we determined that IL-19 has direct proangiogenic effects on aortic rings by inducing angiogenic gene expression. M2 macrophages participate in angiogenesis, and IL-19 has indirect angiogenic effects, as IL-19-stimulated bone marrow-derived macrophages secrete proangiogenic factors that induce greater sprouting of aortic rings than unstimulated controls. Using a quantitative RT-PCR screen, we determined that IL-19 induces expression of angiogenic cytokines in bone marrow-derived macrophages. Together, these data suggest that IL-19 can promote angiogenesis in the absence of hypoxia by at least two distinct mechanisms: 1) direct effects on vascular cells and 2) indirect effects by stimulation of macrophages.
Cardiac papillary fibroelastoma (CPF) is a primary cardiac neoplasm that is increasingly detected by echocardiography. The clinical manifestations of this entity are not well described.
In a 16-year ...period, we identified patients with CPF from our pathology and echocardiography databases. A total of 162 patients had pathologically confirmed CPF. Echocardiography was performed in 141 patients with 158 CPFs, and 48 patients had CPFs that were not visible by echocardiography (<0.2 cm), leaving an echocardiographic subgroup of 93 patients with 110 CPFs. An additional 45 patients with a presumed diagnosis of CPF were identified. The mean age of the patients was 60+/-16 years of age, and 46.1% were male. Echocardiographically, the mean size of the CPFs was 9+/-4.6 mm; 82.7% occurred on valves (aortic more than mitral), 43.6% were mobile, and 91.4% were single. During a follow-up period of 11+/-22 months, 23 of 26 patients with a prospective diagnosis of CPF that was confirmed by pathological examination had symptoms that could be attributable to embolization. In the group of 45 patients with a presumed diagnosis of CPF, 3 patients had symptoms that were likely due to embolization (incidence, 6.6%) during a follow-up period of 552+/-706 days.
CPFs are generally small and single, occur most often on valvular surfaces, and may be mobile, resulting in embolization. Because of the potential for embolic events, symptomatic patients, patients undergoing cardiac surgery for other lesions, and those with highly mobile and large CPFs should be considered for surgical excision.
A new method for the successful alignment of carbon nanotubes is presented. An aqueous lyotropic nematic liquid‐crystal phase acts as a self‐organizing template to align and disperse the ...nonfunctionalized nanotubes simultaneously, and the success of the method is confirmed through Raman spectroscopy analysis (see figure). This work could be extended to allow tailoring of the alignment for specific purposes and properties, using different lyotropic liquid crystals.
Isavuconazole is a new triazole with an expanded-spectrum and potent activity against moulds and yeasts. It has been authorized for use in adults for the treatment of invasive aspergillosis and for ...mucormycosis. The only commercially available isavuconazole susceptibility test is the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) strip isavuconazole test. The objective of this study was to assess the in vitro activity of isavuconazole using gradient concentration MIC strips, compared with the EUCAST broth microdilution reference method. A total of 147 clinically relevant fungal isolates comprising 120 Aspergillus sp. and 27 Scedosporium apiospermum complex were tested for susceptibility to isavuconazole using the EUCAST broth microdilution method and by the MIC strip isavuconazole test. The percent essential agreement between the two methods was calculated within a 1-fold dilution. The geometric means for the MICs using the EUCAST reference methods and the strip test were respectively: 0.60 mg/l and 0.65 mg/l for A. fumigatus, 0.70 mg/l and 0.77 mg/l for A. flavus, 1.50 mg/l and 1.25 mg/l for A. niger, 0.41 mg/l and 0.38 mg/l for A. terreus, 1.22 mg/l and 1.08 mg/l for S. apiospermum complex. The isavuconazole MIC strips showed good agreement with the EUCAST reference method. Isavuconazole MIC strips could be useful for susceptibility testing of Aspergillus sp. and S. apiospermum complex.
The long-term survivorship of patients diagnosed with cancer has improved due to accelerated detection and rapidly evolving cancer treatment strategies. As such, the evaluation and management of ...cancer therapy related complications has become increasingly important, including cardiovascular complications. These have been captured under the umbrella term “cardiotoxicity” and include left ventricular dysfunction and heart failure, acute coronary syndromes, valvular abnormalities, pericardial disease, arrhythmia, myocarditis, and vascular complications. These complications add to the burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) or are risk factors patients with cancer treatment are presenting with. Of note, both pre- and newly developing CVD is of prognostic significance, not only from a cardiovascular perspective but also overall, potentially impacting the level of cancer therapy that is possible. Currently, there are varying recommendations and practices regarding CVD risk assessment and mitigating strategies throughout the cancer continuum. This article provides an overview on this topic, in particular, the role of cardiac imaging in the care of the patient with cancer. Furthermore, it summarizes the current evidence on the spectrum, prevention, and management of chemotherapy-related adverse cardiac effects.
Background
Papillomavirus (HPV) often occurs in the semen of patients with male accessory gland infection (MAGI). Ultrasound (US) evaluation has been suggested as a promising diagnostic tool for ...patients with HPV-related MAGI. No data on the spontaneous clearance of HPV-DNA have been reported so far in HPV-related MAGI.
Purpose
The primary aim of the study was to assess the percentage of early HPV-DNA spontaneous clearance in patients with prostatitis. The secondary aim was to evaluate the frequency of spontaneous clearance of HPV-DNA among patients with prostatitis associated with the presence or absence of US abnormalities.
Methods
Patients with inflammatory MAGI and at least one suspicious criterion for HPV infection underwent semen HPV-DNA detection and prostate US. The presence of HPV-DNA was further investigated after a 6-month-long follow-up.
Main results
Eighty patients satisfied the inclusion criteria and were recruited in the study. 69% of patients (55/80) showed HPV-DNA persistence in the semen. Among them, 82% (45/55) was positive for US signs of prostatitis, while they occurred only in 12% (3/25) of those patients with no sign of HPV-DNA persistence (
p
< 0.001). All patients with persistent high-risk HPV genotype (
n
= 30) showed at least two US signs of prostatitis. In 73% of patients (22/30), E6 and E7 mRNAs were detected.
Conclusion
US signs of prostatitis more frequently occurred in patients with evidence of HPV-DNA persistence on semen, especially in those with high-risk genotypes. This highlights the importance of US in the framework of HPV-related MAGI.
Chest radiography (CXR) is the most frequently performed radiological test worldwide because of its wide availability, non-invasive nature, and low cost. The ability of CXR to diagnose cardiovascular ...diseases, give insight into cardiac function, and predict cardiovascular events is often underutilized, not clearly understood, and affected by inter- and intra-observer variability. Therefore, more sophisticated tests are generally needed to assess cardiovascular diseases. Considering the sustained increase in the incidence of cardiovascular diseases, it is critical to find accessible, fast, and reproducible tests to help diagnose these frequent conditions. The expanded focus on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) with respect to diagnostic cardiovascular imaging has also been applied to CXR, with several publications suggesting that AI models can be trained to detect cardiovascular conditions by identifying features in the CXR. Multiple models have been developed to predict mortality, cardiovascular morphology and function, coronary artery disease, valvular heart diseases, aortic diseases, arrhythmias, pulmonary hypertension, and heart failure. The available evidence demonstrates that the use of AI-based tools applied to CXR for the diagnosis of cardiovascular conditions and prognostication has the potential to transform clinical care. AI-analyzed CXRs could be utilized in the future as a complimentary, easy-to-apply technology to improve diagnosis and risk stratification for cardiovascular diseases. Such advances will likely help better target more advanced investigations, which may reduce the burden of testing in some cases, as well as better identify higher-risk patients who would benefit from earlier, dedicated, and comprehensive cardiovascular evaluation.
