This paper describes a collaborative exercise intended to demonstrate whether uniformity of DNA profiling results could be achieved between European laboratories using short tandem repeat (STR) loci. ...Two different STRs were chosen--HUMTH01 and the AT-rich HUMACTBP2 (SE33). The former locus has only five common alleles, whereas the latter is complex and has at least 30 alleles. Laboratories were asked to test seven blood stains and to report the results to the coordinating laboratory. The exercise demonstrated that the simple STR systems such as HUMTH01 are more amenable to adoption as standard loci than complex AT-rich systems.

The loci D21S11 and HUMFIBRA (FGA) were chosen because they are commonly used by different European laboratories. D21S11 has approximately 14 common alleles (
f>0.001), whereas HUMFIBRA has 19 common alleles. Laboratories were asked to test seven blood stains, one of which was a known control, and to report the results to the coordinating laboratory. The exercise demonstrated that complex STRs were amenable to standardisation.
To establish whether muscle blood flow (MBF) measurements with O-water positron emission tomography could reliably identify patients with critical limb ischemia and detect and quantify a distal ...deficit in skeletal MBF in these cases.
O-water positron emission tomography scans were performed at rest or during unloaded ankle plantar and dorsiflexion exercise of the diseased leg in 17 subjects with leg ischemia or on a randomly selected leg of 18 age-matched healthy control subjects. TcPO2 was evaluated with Novametrix monitors and perfusion of skin topically heated to 44 degrees C and adjacent nonheated areas with a Moor Instruments laser Doppler imaging scanner.
The enhancement of MBF induced by exercise was significantly lower in ischemic than in normal legs, and the sensitivity and specificity of this phenomenon were similar to those of laser Doppler imaging or TcPO2 in identifying ischemia subjects. In addition, the exercise MBF deficit was predominant at the distal-leg levels, indicating the ability of the technique to help determine the correct level of amputation.
Skeletal MBF of legs with severe ischemia can be detected accurately with O-water positron emission tomography and could add valuable information about viability of skeletal muscle in the residual limb when deciding the level of an amputation.

Jedes Kind infiziert sich in den ersten 5 Lebensjahren mindestens einmal mit Rotaviren.
Ziel
Der Artikel stellt Erkenntnisse zur Rotavirusgastroenteritis (RVGE) und ihre ...gesamtgesellschaftliche Bedeutung in Deutschland zusammen und bewertet die Möglichkeiten der Prävention durch Impfung.
Ergebnisse
Im Vergleich zu anderen Durchfallerkrankungen im Kindesalter verlaufen RVGE schwerer. In Deutschland wird jedes 10. an Rotaviren erkrankte Kind stationär behandelt. Vor allem die <2-Jährigen sind von schweren Erkrankungsverläufen betroffen. Jährlich treten in Deutschland mehr als 500.000 RVGE auf, davon benötigen 176.000 ärztliche Versorgung. Daraus entstehen jährlich Kosten für die Gesellschaft von >117 Mio. €. Die einzige wirkungsvolle Präventionsmaßnahme der nur symptomatisch behandelbaren RVGE ist die Schluckimpfung.
Schlussfolgerung
Durch eine generelle Empfehlung und konsequente Umsetzung der Rotavirusimpfung in Deutschland könnten Krankheitslast und -kosten um bis zu 79% reduziert werden. Die Impfung ist eine wirksame präventive Maßnahme, die eine für unsere Kinder bedrohliche Infektionskrankheit verhindern kann.
Dans ce chapitre, nous abordons la durabilité des systèmes alimentaires en lien avec l’urbanisation de nos économies. Nous identifions les enjeux d’une alimentation durable à travers, d’une part, les ...liens entre urbanisation, localisation et transport de marchandises et des personnes et, d’autre part, les liens entre les villes et leurs territoires voisins dans une perspective de développement local soutenable et de sécurisation de l’approvisionnement alimentaire pour les citadins. Nous proposons ensuite quelques orientations de recherche autour de deux axes majeurs : (i) les impacts d’une hausse du prix de l’énergie sur la localisation des différentes activités agroalimentaires et, en retour, sur la durabilité des systèmes alimentaires dans un contexte d’urbanisation croissante et (ii) les avantages/inconvénients relatifs (environnementaux, sociaux, économiques, sanitaires, pertes/déchets) de différentes organisations spatiales de systèmes alimentaires (circuits de proximité vs. circuit long notamment) pour nourrir les agglomérations en tenant compte des stratégies des différents acteurs (des producteurs, des distributeurs, des collectivités locales, …).
