In the present study, results towards the development of a 3D diamond sensor are presented. Conductive channels are produced inside the sensor bulk using a femtosecond laser. This electrode geometry ...allows full charge collection even for low quality diamond sensors. Results from testbeam show that charge is collected by these electrodes. In order to understand the channel growth parameters, with the goal of producing low resistivity channels, the conductive channels produced with a different laser setup are evaluated by Raman spectroscopy.
Abstract Background Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) alters intestinal microvascular control mechanisms causing significant vasoconstriction. Our prior work with intraperitoneal 2.5% dextrose solution ...demonstrated increased intestinal perfusion in experimentally induced NEC. In the current study, we examine whether a buffered solution with lower glucose and osmolar loads similarly increases intestinal blood flow. We hypothesized that buffered 1.5% dextrose solution would increase ileal blood flow compared with baseline in NEC. Methods We randomly assigned pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats to control ( n = 103) or NEC ( n = 123) groups, by litter. We induced NEC by previously published methods. Control pups were vaginally delivered and dam-fed. We used laser Doppler flowmetry to evaluate perfusion in the terminal ileum at 12, 24, 48, 72, or 96 h after delivery at baseline and after application of topical 1.5% dextrose solution. We evaluated differences between groups and time points by analysis of variance and Tukey post hoc test. Results Baseline blood flow in the terminal ileum increased with gestational age in both groups ( P < 0.05). Control groups had significantly greater baseline blood flow than NEC groups ( P < 0.05), and topical application of buffered 1.5% dextrose solution increased blood flow compared with baseline in both groups at all time points ( P < 0.05). Conclusions Topical 1.5% dextrose solution significantly enhanced blood flow in the terminal ileum to the same degree as 2.5% dextrose solution. Thus, the use of buffered 1.5% dextrose solution might be more beneficial in treating clinical NEC, because it places a lower glucose and osmotic load on NEC-injured intestine.

With the commissioning of the LHC in 2010 and upgrades expected in 2015, ATLAS and CMS are planning to upgrade their innermost tracking layers with radiation hard technologies. Chemical Vapor ...Deposition diamond has been used extensively in beam conditions monitors as the innermost detectors in the highest radiation areas of BaBar, Belle, CDF and all LHC experiments. This material is now being considered as a sensor material for use very close to the interaction region where the most extreme radiation conditions exist. Recently the RD42 collaboration constructed, irradiated and tested polycrystalline and single-crystal chemical vapor deposition diamond sensors to the highest fluences expected at the super-LHC. 2 illustrating that both polycrystalline and single-crystal chemical vapor deposition diamonds follow a single damage curve. We also present beam test results of irradiated complete diamond pixel modules.
The presence of hydrosalpinges has been shown to be deleterious in infertility treatment. Pregnancy rates after in-vitro fertilization (IVF) with embryo transfer decline considerably. This study ...concerns a patient who developed bilateral hydrosalpinges during controlled ovarian stimulation in preparation for IVF treatment. Transvaginal aspiration of the tubal fluid was unsuccessful as the tubes refilled within 2 days. Additionally, on the day of embryo transfer a serometra developed which could not be seen on the day of oocyte retrieval. The uterine cavity was evacuated via an embryo transfer catheter and three embryos were transferred. The serometra reappeared 3 days after embryo transfer. A pregnancy could not be achieved. The accumulation of fluid in the uterine cavity during an IVF/embryo transfer cycle is a rare complication of hydrosalpinges. However, the retrograde flow of tubal fluid may disturb intrauterine embryo development. This study suggests that the aspiration of hydrosalpinges and intrauterine fluid accumulation during an IVF cycle is not beneficial, as the underlying pathology is not cured. Cancellation of the treatment cycle or cryopreservation of oocytes in the pronucleate stage and transfer of the cryopreserved oocytes after surgical correction of the tubes may be better options.
To utilize Mendelian randomization to estimate the causal association between low serum vitamin D concentrations, increased body mass index (BMI), and pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis (MS) using ...genetic risk scores (GRS).
We constructed an instrumental variable for vitamin D (vitD GRS) by computing a GRS for 3 genetic variants associated with levels of 25(OH)D in serum using the estimated effect of each risk variant. A BMI GRS was also created that incorporates the cumulative effect of 97 variants associated with BMI. Participants included non-Hispanic white individuals recruited from over 15 sites across the United States (n = 394 cases, 10,875 controls) and Sweden (n = 175 cases, 5,376 controls; total n = 16,820).
Meta-analysis findings demonstrated that a vitD GRS associated with increasing levels of 25(OH)D in serum decreased the odds of pediatric-onset MS (odds ratio OR 0.72, 95% confidence interval CI 0.55, 0.94;
= 0.02) after controlling for sex, genetic ancestry,
, and over 100 non-human leukocyte antigen MS risk variants. A significant association between BMI GRS and pediatric disease onset was also demonstrated (OR 1.17, 95% CI 1.05, 1.30;
= 0.01) after adjusting for covariates. Estimates for each GRS were unchanged when considered together in a multivariable model.
We provide evidence supporting independent and causal effects of decreased vitamin D levels and increased BMI on susceptibility to pediatric-onset MS.
The high-pressure waterjet is a flexible and powerful tool for machining of high-performance products with reduced manufacturing time and costs. However, waterjet machining of complex geometries is ...difficult to handle because of the complication in controlling and adjusting the process. Therefore, the goal of this study is to improve a process control method to adjust the waterjet tool orientation and to optimize the waterjet cutting process in a simple and efficient manner. As a result, a method is developed which is based on constant feed rate and a distinction between concave and convex curvature of the workpiece geometry.
