In the first 100 Martian solar days (sols) of the Mars Science Laboratory mission, the Rover Environmental Monitoring Station (REMS) measured the seasonally evolving diurnal cycles of ultraviolet ...radiation, atmospheric pressure, air temperature, ground temperature, relative humidity, and wind within Gale Crater on Mars. As an introduction to several REMS‐based articles in this issue, we provide an overview of the design and performance of the REMS sensors and discuss our approach to mitigating some of the difficulties we encountered following landing, including the loss of one of the two wind sensors. We discuss the REMS data set in the context of other Mars Science Laboratory instruments and observations and describe how an enhanced observing strategy greatly increased the amount of REMS data returned in the first 100 sols, providing complete coverage of the diurnal cycle every 4 to 6 sols. Finally, we provide a brief overview of key science results from the first 100 sols. We found Gale to be very dry, never reaching saturation relative humidities, subject to larger diurnal surface pressure variations than seen by any previous lander on Mars, air temperatures consistent with model predictions and abundant short timescale variability, and surface temperatures responsive to changes in surface properties and suggestive of subsurface layering.

Mussels were fed during 4 weeks with the green algae ...Scenedesmus vacuolatus previously exposed to a commercial formulation of glyphosate (6 mg L−1 active principle) with the addition of alkyl aryl polyglycol ether surfactant. After 1, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days of dietary exposure, glutathione-S-transferase (GST), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), carboxylesterases (CES) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities, glutathione (GSH) content and damage to lipids and proteins levels were analyzed. A significant increase (72%) in the GST activity and a significant decrease (26%) in the CES activity in the mussels fed on glyphosate exposed algae for 28 days were observed. The ALP activity was significantly increased at 21 and 28 days of dietary exposure (48% and 72%, respectively). GSH content and CAT, SOD and AchE activities did not show any differences between the exposed and non exposed bivalves. No oxidative damage to lipids and proteins, measured as TBARS and carbonyl content respectively, was observed in response to glyphosate dietary exposure. The decrease in the CES activity and the increases in GST and ALP activities observed in L. fortunei indicate that dietary exposure to glyphosate provokes metabolic alterations, related with detoxification mechanisms.

exposed to a glyphosate-based ...formulation under direct and dietary exposures (4 mg a.p./L). After 1, 7, and 14 days of exposure, reduced glutathione (GSH) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels and the activities of glutathione-S- transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) were evaluated in the gills and digestive gland. The hepatosomatic (HSI) and branchiosomatic (BSI) indices were also analyzed. Direct and dietary glyphosate-based formulation exposure altered the redox homeostasis in the gills and digestive gland throughout the experimental time, inducing the detoxification response (GST), the antioxidant defenses (SOD, CAT, GSH), and causing lipid peroxidation. After 14 days of exposure, the HSI and BSI increased significantly (43% and 157%, respectively) only in the bivalves under direct exposure. Greater changes in the biochemical parameters were induced by the dietary exposure than by the direct exposure. Furthermore, the gills presented an earlier response compared to the digestive gland. These results suggested that direct and dietary exposure to a glyphosate-based formulation induced oxidative stress in the gills and digestive glands of
D. chilensis
. Thus, the presence of glyphosate-based formulations in aquatic ecosystems could represent a risk for filter-feeding organisms like bivalves.

To assess the health status of both species, we analyzed morphological and histological alterations in the digestive gland and their relation to metal concentrations in this organ and in the water. Water and specimens sampling took place in the first section of the delta of the Parana River in June and September. Most metal concentrations increased in the river, although in the digestive gland only iron in
D. delodontus
and nickel and zinc in
C. fluminea
increased seasonally. Digestive gland factor and hepatosomatic index indicated higher values in

Therefore, the question must be raised as of the effects of holding a sports event such as the Euro Cup in countries with a policy defying UEFA and European Union values, as in the case of modern Hungary, a sensitive case because of the controversial Home Financing Law; in addition, the public sports diplomacy enhances anirredentist vision of the "Great Hungary'', which is troublesome in the current European Union framework. This work pretends to research and clarify the Hungarian association structure in order to put into perspective the suitability to develop SME in countries proclaiming illiberal values.
The changes in brick porosity upon firing (700 up to 1100 °C) and its relation to the mineralogical composition are examined. Two types of raw clay with a composition representative of that used in ...brick-making industry were selected to manufacture the bricks: one contains notable amounts of carbonates, with a grain size of under 1 mm, and the other is predominantly quartzitic and lacking in carbonates. We demonstrate that the presence or absence of carbonates strongly influences the porosity development and, therefore, the brick texture and physical-mechanical properties. The carbonates in the raw clay promote the formation of fissures and of pores under 1 μm in size when the bricks are fired between 800 and 1000 °C. The absence of carbonates results in a continuous reduction in porosity and a significant increase in the pore fraction with a radius (
r)>1 μm as the firing temperature rises and smaller pores coalesce. Porosity and pore size distribution results obtained from the combined use of hydric tests (HT), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and digital image analysis (DIA) of scanning electron microscopy photomicrographs are compared. A clear correlation between the water absorption and drying behaviour of the bricks and the porosity plus pore size distribution is observed. DIA discloses the evolution of size, shape and connectivity of macropores (
r> 1 μm) and evidences that MIP results underestimate the macropore content. Conversely, MIP gives a good estimate of the open porosity and of the distribution of pores with
r<1 μm. It is concluded that the combined use of these complementary techniques helps to fully characterise the pore system of bricks. These results as well as the study of the evolution of the speed of ultrasound waves vs. time yield useful information to evaluate the bricks physical–mechanical behaviour and durability. The relevance of these findings in the conservation of historic buildings is discussed.
This article presents ECO-DKF, the first Event-Triggered and Certifiable Optimal Distributed Kalman Filter. Our algorithm addresses two major issues inherent to distributed Kalman filters: fully ...distributed and scalable optimal estimation and reduction of the communication bandwidth usage. The first requires to solve an NP-hard optimization problem, forcing relaxations that lose optimality guarantees over the original problem. Using only information from one-hop neighbors, we propose a tight semidefinite programming relaxation that allows to certify locally and online if the relaxed solution is the optimum of the original NP-hard problem. In that case, ECO-DKF is optimal in the square error sense under scalability and event-triggered one-hop communications restrictions. In addition, ECO-DKF is a globally asymptotically stable estimator. To address the second issue, we propose an event-triggered scheme from the relaxed optimization output. The consequence is a broadcasting-based algorithm that saves communication bandwidth, avoids individual communication links and multiple information exchanges within instants, and preserves the optimality and stability properties of the filter.
We describe preliminary results from the first 100 sols of ground temperature measurements along the Mars Science Laboratory's traverse from Bradbury Landing to Rocknest in Gale. The ground ...temperature data show long‐term increases in mean temperature that are consistent with seasonal evolution. Deviations from expected temperature trends within the diurnal cycle are observed and may be attributed to rover and environmental effects. Fits to measured diurnal temperature amplitudes using a thermal model suggest that the observed surfaces have thermal inertias in the range of 265–375 J m−2 K−1 s−1/2, which are within the range of values determined from orbital measurements and are consistent with the inertias predicted from the observed particle sizes on the uppermost surface near the rover. Ground temperatures at Gale Crater appear to warm earlier and cool later than predicted by the model, suggesting that there are multiple unaccounted for physical conditions or processes in our models. Where the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) descent engines removed a mobile layer of dust and fine sediments from over rockier material, the diurnal temperature profile is closer to that expected for a homogeneous surface, suggesting that the mobile materials on the uppermost surface may be partially responsible for the mismatch between observed temperatures and those predicted for materials having a single thermal inertia. Models of local stratigraphy also implicate thermophysical heterogeneity at the uppermost surface as a potential contributor to the observed diurnal temperature cycle.

Despite the importance of sand and dust to Mars geomorphology, weather, and exploration, the processes that move sand and that raise dust to maintain Mars' ubiquitous dust haze and to produce dust ...storms have not been well quantified in situ, with missions lacking either the necessary sensors or a sufficiently active aeolian environment. Perseverance rover's novel environmental sensors and Jezero crater's dusty environment remedy this. In Perseverance's first 216 sols, four convective vortices raised dust locally, while, on average, four passed the rover daily, over 25% of which were significantly dusty ("dust devils"). More rarely, dust lifting by nonvortex wind gusts was produced by daytime convection cells advected over the crater by strong regional daytime upslope winds, which also control aeolian surface features. One such event covered 10 times more area than the largest dust devil, suggesting that dust devils and wind gusts could raise equal amounts of dust under nonstorm conditions.
