The reconstruction of a system of ring-shaped accelerators has been completed at the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics: carbon nuclei have been accelerated in the U-10 synchrotron up ...to maximum energy 4 GeV/amu C^sup 4+^ ions from a laser ion source are preaccelerated in the I-3 linear injector up to 1.5 MeV/amu and in the UK booster synchrotron up to 50 MeV/amu, injected via the charge-transfer scheme C^sup 4+^ arrow right C^sup 6+^ into the U-10 synchrotron on an increasing magnetic field and accelerated to maximum energy. The basic technological features of the acceleration scheme employed and the results of the first physical experiment with relativistic carbon nuclei are described.PUBLICATION ABSTRACT
We report on a measurement of thermal neutrons, generated by the hadronic component of extensive air showers (EAS), by means of a small array of EN-detectors developed for the PRISMA project (PRImary ...Spectrum Measurement Array), novel devices based on a compound alloy of ZnS(Ag) and \(^{6}\)LiF. This array has been operated within the ARGO-YBJ experiment at the high altitude Cosmic Ray Observatory in Yangbajing (Tibet, 4300 m a.s.l.). Due to the tight correlation between the air shower hadrons and thermal neutrons, this technique can be envisaged as a simple way to estimate the number of high energy hadrons in EAS. Coincident events generated by primary cosmic rays of energies greater than 100 TeV have been selected and analyzed. The EN-detectors have been used to record simultaneously thermal neutrons and the air shower electromagnetic component. The density distributions of both components and the total number of thermal neutrons have been measured. The correlation of these data with the measurements carried out by ARGO-YBJ confirms the excellent performance of the EN-detector.

C super(6+) ions with energy 200 MeV/nucleon have been accumulated in the chamber of the ring magnet of the U-10 proton synchrotron used as a storage ring in the TWAC setup. A C super(4+) ion beam ...from the laser source was first accelerated in the I-3 injector up to 1.3 MeV/nucleon and in the UK booster synchrotron up to final energy with periodicity 3.5 sec. Ions have been accumulated in U-10 using the multiple charge-exchange injection scheme C super(4+) 1 C super(6+). An increase in the ion intensity in the accumulator has been observed during several injection cycles. Experimental data on the attained parameters of the accumulated beam are presented, and the status of the optimization of the accumulation regime is discussed.

Experiments on rats with myocardial infarction induced by occlusion of the left coronary artery were made to explore the influence of calcium antagonists injected intraperitoneally for a long time ...(daily, for 21 days) on hemodynamics, contractile function and morphology of the heart muscle. It has been shown that verapamil (0.5 mg/kg), diltiazem (2 mg/kg) and nimodipine (20 micrograms/kg) do not exert under those conditions any noticeable effect on pump and contractile heart functions. Administration of verapamil in a doze of 2 mg/kg enhanced heart failure. The drugs under study normalized the response of contractile heart function to volumetric load, which is related to a considerable measure to the acceleration of reparative processes in the myocardium.
