The spectral resolution of a dispersive spectrograph is dependent on the width of the entrance slit. This means that astronomical spectrographs trade-off throughput with spectral resolving power. ...Recently, optical guided-wave transitions known as photonic lanterns have been proposed to circumvent this trade-off, by enabling the efficient reformatting of multimode light into a pseudo-slit which is highly multimode in one axis, but diffraction-limited in the other. Here, we demonstrate the successful reformatting of a telescope point spread function into such a slit using a three-dimensional integrated optical waveguide device, which we name the photonic dicer. Using the CANARY adaptive optics (AO) demonstrator on the William Herschel Telescope, and light centred at 1530 nm with a 160 nm full width at half-maximum, the device shows a transmission of between 10 and 20 per cent depending upon the type of AO correction applied. Most of the loss is due to the overfilling of the input aperture in poor and moderate seeing. Taking this into account, the photonic device itself has a transmission of 57 ± 4 per cent. We show how a fully-optimized device can be used with AO to provide efficient spectroscopy at high spectral resolution.
Topological quantum matter can be realized by subjecting engineered systems to time-periodic modulations. In analogy with static systems, periodically driven quantum matter can be topologically ...classified by topological invariants, whose non-zero value guarantees the presence of robust edge modes. In the high-frequency limit of the drive, topology is described by standard topological invariants, such as Chern numbers. Away from this limit, these topological numbers become irrelevant, and novel topological invariants must be introduced to capture topological edge transport. The corresponding edge modes were coined anomalous topological edge modes, to highlight their intriguing origin. Here we demonstrate the experimental observation of these topological edge modes in a 2D photonic lattice, where these propagating edge states are shown to coexist with a quasi-localized bulk. Our work opens an exciting route for the exploration of topological physics in time-modulated systems operating away from the high-frequency regime.
We demonstrate the first experimental realization of a dispersionless state, in a photonic Lieb lattice formed by an array of optical waveguides. This engineered lattice supports three energy bands, ...including a perfectly flat middle band with an infinite effective mass. We analyze, both experimentally and theoretically, the evolution of well-prepared flat-band states, and show their remarkable robustness, even in the presence of disorder. The realization of flat-band states in photonic lattices opens an exciting door towards quantum simulation of flat-band models in a highly controllable environment.
We report on the experimental realization of a uniform synthetic magnetic flux and the observation of Aharonov-Bohm cages in photonic lattices. Considering a rhombic array of optical waveguides, we ...engineer modulation-assisted tunneling processes that effectively produce nonzero magnetic flux per plaquette. This synthetic magnetic field for light can be tuned at will by varying the phase of the modulation. In the regime where half a flux quantum is realized in each plaquette, all the energy bands dramatically collapse into nondispersive (flat) bands and all eigenstates are completely localized. We demonstrate this Aharonov-Bohm caging by studying the propagation of light in the bulk of the photonic lattice. Besides, we explore the dynamics on the edge of the lattice and discuss how the corresponding edge states can be continuously connected to the topological edge states of the Creutz ladder. Our photonic lattice constitutes an appealing platform where the interplay between engineered gauge fields, frustration, localization, and topological properties can be finely studied.
Celiac disease （CD） is one of the most common diseas- es, resulting from both environmental （gluten） and ge- netic factors human leukocyte antigen （HLA） and non- HLA genes. The prevalence of CD has ...been estimated to approximate 0.5%-1% in different parts of the world. However, the population with diabetes, autoim- mune disorder or relatives of CD individuals have even higher risk for the development of CD, at least in part, because of shared HLA typing. Gliadin gains access to the basal surface of the epithelium, and interact directly with the immune system, via both trans- and para-cellular routes. From a diagnostic perspective, symptoms may be viewed as either ＂typical＂ or ＂atypi- cal＂. In both positive serological screening results sug- gestive of CD, should lead to small bowel biopsy fol- lowed by a favourable clinical and serological response to the gluten-free diet （GFD） to confirm the diagnosis. Positive anti-tissue transglutaminase antibody or anti- endomysial antibody during the clinical course helps to confirm the diagnosis of CD because of their over 99% specificities when small bowel villous atrophy is pres- ent on biopsy. Currently, the only treatment available for CD individuals is a strict life-long GFD. A greater understanding of the pathogenesis of CD allows alter- native future CD treatments to hydrolyse toxic gliadin peptide, prevent toxic gliadin peptide absorption, blockage of selective deamidation of specific glutamine residues by tissue, restore immune tolerance towards gluten, modulation of immune response to dietary glia- din, and restoration of intestinal architecture.
The paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) paradigm is increasingly employed to examine intracortical inhibitory processes in different motor tasks. Short-interval intracortical ...inhibition (SICI) has been shown to vary with the size of the MEP elicited by the test TMS pulse. This suggests that factors that alter MEP size, such as changes in cortical excitability, may confound the interpretation of SICI. However, the effect of excitability on SICI has not been systematically investigated. The present study examined SICI in 11 volunteers. The effect of test TMS intensities ranging from 90 to 150% resting motor threshold (RMT) on SICI was examined in three excitability states in the right first dorsal interosseous muscle: rest, isometric abduction of the left index finger (Contra) and isometric abduction of the right index finger (Active). For all excitability states SICI was not observed when test TMS intensity was less than 110% resting motor threshold. This was true even for the Active condition in which 90 and 100% test TMS intensities elicited large and consistent MEPs. For all conditions moderately suprathreshold test TMS intensities (110–120% RMT) yielded the greatest measure of SICI; increasing test TMS intensities resulted in a progressive reduction in the estimate of SICI. These results suggest that estimates of SICI are systematically affected by the intensity of the test TMS pulse, regardless of excitability state. The results suggest that SICI should be examined using a constant test TMS intensity regardless of changes in cortical excitability and test MEP size.
There is considerable uncertainty over the effect of wind power on the operation of power systems, and the consequent greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions displacement; this is used to project emissions ...reductions that inform energy policy. Currently, it is approximated as the average emissions of the whole system, despite an acknowledgement that wind will actually displace only the generators operating on the margin. This article presents a methodology to isolate the marginal emissions displacement of wind power from historical empirical data, taking into account the impact on the operating efficiency of coal and CCGT plants. For Great Britain over 2009–2014, it was found that marginal emissions displacement has generally been underestimated with, for example, the emissions displacement factor for wind being 21% higher than that the average emissions factor in 2010. The actual displacement depends upon the relative merit of coal and CCGT, with a greater discrepancy between marginal displacement and average emissions during more normal system operation, suggesting that policies to penalise high-carbon generation can increase the effectiveness of wind at reducing GHG emissions. Furthermore, it was also identified that wind power is almost as technically effective as demand-side reductions at decreasing GHG emissions from power generation.

Pathogenic species in the Yersinia genus have historically been targets for research aimed at understanding how bacteria evolve into mammalian pathogens. The advent of large-scale population genomic ...studies has greatly accelerated the progress in this field, and Yersinia pestis, Yersinia pseudotuberculosis and Yersinia enterocolitica have once again acted as model organisms to help shape our understanding of the evolutionary processes involved in pathogenesis. In this Review, we highlight the gene gain, gene loss and genome rearrangement events that have been identified by genomic studies in pathogenic Yersinia species, and we discuss how these findings are changing our understanding of pathogen evolution. Finally, as these traits are also found in the genomes of other species in the Enterobacteriaceae, we suggest that they provide a blueprint for the evolution of enteropathogenic bacteria.
We aimed to clarify the epidemiologic and clinical importance of evolutionary events that occurred in carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP). We collected 203 CRKP causing bloodstream ...infections in a tertiary hospital in China during 2013-2017. We detected a subclonal shift in the dominant clone sequence type (ST) 11 CRKP in which the previously prevalent capsular loci (KL) 47 had been replaced by KL64 since 2016. Patients infected with ST11-KL64 CRKP had a significantly higher 30-day mortality rate than other CRKP-infected patients. Enhanced virulence was further evidenced by phenotypic tests. Phylogenetic reconstruction demonstrated that ST11-KL64 is derived from an ST11-KL47-like ancestor through recombination. We identified a pLVPK-like virulence plasmid carrying rmpA and peg-344 in ST11-KL64 exclusively from 2016 onward. The pLVPK-like-positive ST11-KL64 isolates exhibited enhanced environmental survival. Retrospective screening of a national collection identified ST11-KL64 in multiple regions. Targeted surveillance of this high-risk CRKP clone is urgently needed.
