There is an increasing demand for precise molecular spectroscopy, in particular in the mid-infrared fingerprint window that hosts a considerable number of vibrational signatures, whether it be for ...modeling our atmosphere, interpreting astrophysical spectra or testing fundamental physics. We present a high-resolution mid-infrared spectrometer traceable to primary frequency standards. It combines a widely tunable ultra-narrow Quantum Cascade Laser (QCL), an optical frequency comb and a compact multipass cell. The QCL frequency is stabilized onto a comb controlled with a remote near-infrared ultra-stable laser, transferred through a fiber link. The resulting QCL frequency stability is below 10-15 from 0.1 to 10s and its frequency uncertainty of 4×10-14 is given by the remote frequency standards. Continuous tuning over ~400 MHz is reported. We use the apparatus to perform saturated absorption spectroscopy of methanol in the low-pressure multipass cell and demonstrate a statistical uncertainty at the kHz level on transition center frequencies, confirming its potential for driving the next generation technology required for precise spectroscopic measurements.
In obesity, chronic membrane-localization of CD36 free fatty acid (FFA) translocase, but not other FFA transporters, enhances FFA uptake and intracellular lipid accumulation. This ectopic lipid ...accumulation promotes insulin resistance by inhibiting insulin-induced GLUT4 glucose transporter trafficking and glucose uptake. GLUT4 and CD36 cell surface delivery is triggered by insulin- and contraction-induced signaling, which share conserved downstream effectors. While we have gathered detailed knowledge on GLUT4 trafficking, the mechanisms regulating CD36 membrane delivery and subsequent FFA uptake in skeletal muscle are not fully understood. The exocyst trafficking complex facilitates the docking of membrane-bound vesicles, a process underlying the controlled surface delivery of fuel transporters. The exocyst regulates insulin-induced glucose uptake via GLUT4 membrane trafficking in adipocytes and skeletal muscle cells and plays a role in lipid uptake in adipocytes. Based on the high degree of conservation of the GLUT4 and CD36 trafficking mechanisms in adipose and skeletal muscle tissue, we hypothesized that the exocyst also contributes to lipid uptake in skeletal muscle and acts through the targeted plasma membrane delivery of CD36 in response to insulin and contraction. Here, we show that the exocyst complex is necessary for insulin- and contraction-induced CD36 membrane trafficking and FFA uptake in muscle cells.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the usefulness of a hydrocolloid dressing containing ceramide for hand-foot skin reaction (HFSR) on the soles of the feet in metastatic renal cell ...carcinoma (RCC) patients treated with sorafenib.
Patients with grade 1 HFSR on the soles of the feet were randomly assigned in to two groups. One group received a hydrocolloid dressing containing ceramide (arm A) and the other received 10% urea cream (arm B). Patients in both groups applied treatment to the affected sites on the soles of the feet, but not to the hands. The primary end point was the incidence of grade 2 or 3 HFSR on the soles of the feet in the first 4 weeks.
Thirty-three patients were assessed (17 in arm A and 16 in arm B), and there were no significant differences in baseline characteristics between the two groups. During the observation period of this study, grade 2 or 3 HFSR on the soles of the feet was found in 29% of patients in arm A and was significantly less than the 69% in arm B (P = 0.03). The incidence of HFSR on the hands, however, was similar in both arms. The median time to grade 2 or 3 HFSR on the soles of the feet was also significantly longer in arm A than in arm B (P = 0.03).
These results indicate that a hydrocolloid dressing containing ceramide prevented the worsening of HFSR caused by sorafenib in metastatic RCC patients.

Edge localized modes (ELMs) in the H-mode operation of tokamak reactors may be suppressed/mitigated by the resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP), but RMP coils are considered incompatible with DEMO ...reactors under the strong neutron flux. We propose an innovative concept of the RMP without installing coils but inserting ferritic steels of the helical configuration. Helically perturbed field is naturally formed in the axisymmetric toroidal field through the helical ferritic steel inserts (FSIs). When ELMs are avoided, large stationary heat load on divertor plates can be reduced by adopting a flux-tube-expansion (FTE) divertor like an X divertor. Separatrix shape and divertor-plate inclination are similar to those of a simple long-leg divertor configuration. Combination of the helical FSIs and the FTE divertor is a suitable method for the heat control to avoid transient ELM heat pulse and to reduce stationary divertor heat load in a tokamak DEMO reactor.
Surveillance has long been used as a way to guard against dangers lurking in one’s immediate environment. Humans have carried over this evolutionarily adaptive solution to the maintenance of their ...interpersonal relationships. The landscape of relational surveillance has dramatically changed with the inception of Internet platforms, such as social networking sites. The goal of this investigation is to understand the motives of online surveillance in romantic relationships. Patterns of negative relational maintenance behaviors and the investment model were used to predict relational determinants of surveillance over social networking sites. A cross-sectional survey design was employed to collect data from college student and nonstudent adult populations. The results find that indicators of low-quality relationships, such as low satisfaction, are associated with online surveillance. Interpersonal surveillance over social networking sites is in turn related to larger amounts of time spent on romantic partners’ profile pages.
Goals of Japan's fusion demonstration (DEMO) reactor are to demonstrate (1) steady and stable electric power generation in a power plant scale, (2) self-sufficient production of fuel (tritium), and ...(3) reasonable availability using a remote maintenance scheme anticipated in a commercial plant. Main design parameters of JA DEMO are a plasma major radius of 8.5 m, fusion output of 1.5-2 GW, magnetic field on the plasma axis of 5.94 T. The superconducting coil system of the reactor consists of a central solenoid (CS), 7 poloidal field (PF) coils and 16 toroidal field (TF) coils. Regarding CS and PF coils, superconducting coil technology on DEMO is basically the same as that on the world largest fusion experimental reactor called ITER. In contrast, TF coils have a technology gap on magnetic energy and the resulting stress between ITER and DEMO due to their size and magnetic field. In particular, the necessity of higher design stress is critical for TF coils, requiring the development of high strength cryogenic steels surpassing the existing ones. The fundamental design strategy to mitigate tolerances in TF coil fabrication is also presented.
Seminal studies concerning the Internet brought legitimacy to public concerns about its dissocializing effects. Although the negative social and professional outcomes of the Internet are still ...attributed to the time users spend online, scholars have more recently turned their attention to media habits in explaining these effects. This investigation tests the displacement and media habit perspectives on the consequences of Internet use. Study 1 uses cross‐sectional data to test the displacement and Internet habit positions. The data support media habit theory explanations but find little support for displacement theory. Study 2 replicates the results of Study 1 with longitudinal data from incoming college freshmen. Study 3 holds time constant and examines the causal direction between functional difficulties and habit strength
