More than 97% of youths in the United States are connected to the Internet in some way. An unintended outcome of the Internet’s pervasive reach is the growing rate of harmful offenses against ...children and teens. Cyberbullying victimization is one such offense that has recently received a fair amount of attention. The present report synthesizes findings from quantitative research on cyberbullying victimization. An integrative definition for the term cyberbullying is provided, differences between traditional bullying and cyberbullying are explained, areas of convergence and divergence are offered, and sampling and/or methodological explanations for the inconsistencies in the literature are considered. About 20–40% of all youths have experienced cyberbullying at least once in their lives. Demographic variables such as age and gender do not appear to predict cyberbullying victimization. Evidence suggests that victimization is associated with serious psychosocial, affective, and academic problems. The report concludes by outlining several areas of concern in cyberbullying research and discusses ways that future research can remedy them.
Losses of self-control over Internet use, indicative of Internet habits, have caught the attention of the public for some time. A large collection of studies that theorize about and test the ...associations between psychosocial problems and Internet habits has been amassed over the last two decades. A meta-analytic review was used to determine the average correlations of Internet habits with loneliness and depression in existing research and explore several conditions under which these effects may vary. The cumulative correlations revealed that loneliness and depression were independently associated with Internet habits across the studies. Although the relationship between loneliness and Internet habits was stable across a number of different conditions, the depression-Internet habit association varied with age groups, year of publication, and sample types.
Many modern theories predict that the fundamental constants depend on time, position or the local density of matter. Here we develop a spectroscopic method for pulsed beams of cold molecules, and use ...it to measure the frequencies of microwave transitions in CH with accuracy down to 3 Hz. By comparing these frequencies with those measured from sources of CH in the Milky Way, we test the hypothesis that fundamental constants may differ between the high- and low-density environments of the Earth and the interstellar medium. For the fine structure constant we find Δα/α=(0.3 ± 1.1) × 10⁻⁷, the strongest limit to date on such a variation of α. For the electron-to-proton mass ratio we find Δμ/μ=(-0.7 ± 2.2) × 10⁻⁷. We suggest how dedicated astrophysical measurements can improve these constraints further and can also constrain temporal variation of the constants.
BiVO4 powder with scheelite structure was obtained by hydrolyzing a nitric acid solution of Bi(NO3)3 and Na3VO4 with bases (Na2CO3 and NaHCO3) at room temperature. Tetragonal BiVO4 of a ...high-temperature form was obtained after 4.5 h of preparation time while monoclinic BiVO4 was done after 46 h. Although the structure and the band gap of tetragonal BiVO4 with scheelite structure were similar to those of monoclinic BiVO4, the photocatalytic activity of the tetragonal BiVO4 for O2 evolution from an aqueous AgNO3 solution under visible light irradiation was negligible. In contrast, the monoclinic BiVO4 showed high photocatalytic activity. Distortion of a Bi−O polyhedron by a 6s2 lone pair of Bi3+ plays an important role for high photocatalytic activity of the monoclinic BiVO4 under visible light irradiation.
We report on precision spectroscopy of subwavelength confined molecular gases. This was obtained by rovibrational selective reflection of NH3 and SF6 gases using a quantum cascade laser at λ ≈ 10.6 μ ...m . Our technique probes molecules at micrometric distances (≈ λ/2π) from the window of a macroscopic cell with submegahertz resolution, allowing molecule-surface interaction spectroscopy. We exploit the linearity and high resolution of our technique to gain novel spectroscopic information on the SF6 greenhouse gas, useful for enriching molecular databases. The natural extension of our work to thin cells will allow compact frequency references and improved measurements of the Casimir-Polder interaction with molecules.
We demonstrate cryogenic buffer-gas cooling of gas-phase methyltrioxorhenium (MTO). This molecule is closely related to chiral organometallic molecules where the parity-violating energy differences ...between enantiomers is measurable. The molecules are produced with a rotational temperature of approximately 6 K by laser ablation of an MTO pellet inside a cryogenic helium buffer gas cell. Facilitated by the low temperature, we demonstrate absorption spectroscopy of the 10.2 m antisymmetric Re=O stretching mode of MTO with a resolution of 8 MHz and a frequency accuracy of 30 MHz. We partially resolve the hyperfine structure and measure the nuclear quadrupole coupling of the excited vibrational state. Our ability to produce dense samples of complex molecules of this type at low temperatures represents a key step towards a precision measurement of parity violation in a chiral species.
Hawai'i has the highest nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung infection prevalence in the United States. Limited data regarding skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI) due to NTM in Hawai'i exists. ...This study describes patient demographics, clinical courses of infection, treatment patterns, and clinical outcomes of NTM SSTIs in Hawai'i.
A retrospective chart review (n = 50) of patients diagnosed and treated at Hawai'i Pacific Health facilities for NTM SSTIs between January 2010 and July 2021 was conducted. Patient demographics, clinical course, and treatment data were collected from electronic medical records.
Half of the patient population consisted of females, and the average age of patients during infection was 49 years (SD = 25.6). The majority of cases (80%) were caused by rapidly growing mycobacteria (RGM), most commonly Mycobacterium abscessus. NTM SSTI by race were Asian (48%), White (28%), and Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islanders (16%). Almost all Asian patients with NTM SSTI were Filipino or Japanese. Diagnosis was frequently delayed. The average time to diagnosis was 116 days. Most patients achieved complete resolution (72%) following a prolonged course of antimicrobial treatment (mean = 196 days) with surgical debridement.
Increased awareness among physicians and the community of non-mycobacterial skin infections is essential in Hawai'i due to the high prevalence of NTM and the high percentage of predisposed populations. Increased awareness of NTM could reduce delayed diagnosis and improve patient care. Further studies are required to inform optimal treatment and diagnostic strategies, improve patient outcomes, and aid public health surveillance efforts.
Cyberstalking research has revealed information about who is perpetrating what offense to whom. This study adds to research on cyberstalking by exploring how victims respond to the unwanted pursuit. ...The reflections of cyberstalking victims were content analyzed to answer research questions about different risk management behaviors, their effectiveness, and their relationship with specific cyberstalking behaviors. Findings indicated that victims used seven general management tactics of which ignore/avoidance, active technological disassociation, and help seeking were the most common. Using technology to move away from pursuers was reported as the most effective tactic for managing the unwanted relational pursuit. The results also suggested that victims’ management responses were associated with the type of behaviors experienced.
Sexual scripts in pornography rarely include condoms. Many U.S. college students consume pornography and have unprotected sex. Yet no study appears to have investigated whether pornography ...consumption is correlated with having unprotected sex among U.S. college students. This article reports results from two studies of pornography consumption and condomless sex among U.S. college students. Pornography consumption was directly associated with a higher likelihood of condomless sex in study 1. This finding was replicated in study 2. Study 2 also explored whether perceptions of peers' use of condoms partially mediates the association between pornography consumption and condomless sex. Pornography consumption was associated with lower estimations of peers' condom use, and lower estimations of peers' condom use were associated with personally engaging in condomless sex.

Social media habits represent one of the most common – and controversial – forms of habitual behavior in contemporary society. In this brief article, we summarize the state of research on social ...media habits, along with their position within the technology habit literature. First, we review the wide range of positive and negative behaviors falling under the umbrella of “social media habits.” Then, we deconstruct how a given social media habit can be viewed from five levels of analysis: platform, device, interface, behavior, and motor. Last, we anticipate how future researchers and designers will have the potential to detect (un)healthy habitual processes via digital tracking. As a whole, the article demonstrates the need to break apart the components of social media habits in order to clarify their implications for well-being.
