We present a large spectroscopic campaign with Keck/Multi-Object Spectrometer for InfraRed Exploration (MOSFIRE) targeting Ly emission (Ly ) from intrinsically faint Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) ...behind 12 efficient galaxy cluster lenses. Gravitational lensing allows us to probe the more abundant faint galaxy population to sensitive Ly equivalent-width limits. During the campaign, we targeted 70 LBG candidates with the MOSFIRE Y band, selected photometrically to cover Ly over the range 7 < z < 8.2. We detect signal-to-noise ratio > 5 emission lines in two of these galaxies and find that they are likely Ly at z = 7.148 0.001 and z = 7.161 0.001. We present new lens models for four of the galaxy clusters, using our previously published lens models for the remaining clusters to determine the magnification factors for the source galaxies. Using a Bayesian framework that employs large-scale reionization simulations of the intergalactic medium (IGM) as well as realistic properties of the interstellar medium and circumgalactic medium, we infer the volume-averaged neutral hydrogen fraction, , in the IGM during reionization to be at z = 7.6 0.6. Our result is consistent with a late and rapid reionization scenario inferred by Planck.
Abstract
We present a blind time-delay strong lensing (TDSL) cosmographic analysis of the doubly imaged quasar SDSS 1206+4332 . We combine the relative time delay between the quasar images, Hubble ...Space Telescope imaging, the Keck stellar velocity dispersion of the lensing galaxy, and wide-field photometric and spectroscopic data of the field to constrain two angular diameter distance relations. The combined analysis is performed by forward modelling the individual data sets through a Bayesian hierarchical framework, and it is kept blind until the very end to prevent experimenter bias. After unblinding, the inferred distances imply a Hubble constant H0 = 68.8$^{+5.4}_{-5.1}$ km s−1 Mpc−1, assuming a flat Λ cold dark matter cosmology with uniform prior on Ωm in 0.05, 0.5. The precision of our cosmographic measurement with the doubly imaged quasar SDSS 1206+4332 is comparable with those of quadruply imaged quasars and opens the path to perform on selected doubles the same analysis as anticipated for quads. Our analysis is based on a completely independent lensing code than our previous three H0LiCOW systems and the new measurement is fully consistent with those. We provide the analysis scripts paired with the publicly available software to facilitate independent analysis (footnote with link to www.h0licow.org). The consistency between blind measurements with independent codes provides an important sanity check on lens modelling systematics. By combining the likelihoods of the four systems under the same prior, we obtain H0 = 72.5$^{+2.1}_{-2.3}$ km s−1 Mpc−1. This measurement is independent of the distance ladder and other cosmological probes.
We present inferences on the geometry and kinematics of the broad-Hβ line-emitting region in four active galactic nuclei monitored as part of the fall 2010 reverberation mapping campaign at MDM ...Observatory led by the Ohio State University. From modeling the continuum variability and response in emission-line profile changes as a function of time, we infer the geometry of the Hβ-emitting broad-line regions (BLRs) to be thick disks that are close to face-on to the observer with kinematics that are well-described by either elliptical orbits or inflowing gas. We measure the black hole mass to be for Mrk 335, for Mrk 1501, for 3C 120, and for PG 2130+099. These black hole mass measurements are not based on a particular assumed value of the virial scale factor f, allowing us to compute individual f factors for each target. Our results nearly double the number of targets that have been modeled in this manner, and we investigate the properties of a more diverse sample by including previously modeled objects. We measure an average scale factor in the entire sample of when the line dispersion is used to characterize the line width, which is consistent with the values derived using the normalization of the - relation. We find that the scale factor f for individual targets is likely correlated with the black hole mass, inclination angle, and opening angle of the BLR, but we do not find any correlation with the luminosity.
We present the results of a search for galaxy substructures in a sample of 11 gravitational lens galaxies from the Sloan Lens ACS Survey by Bolton et al. We find no significant detection of mass ...clumps, except for a luminous satellite in the system SDSS J0956+5110. We use these non-detections, in combination with a previous detection in the system SDSS J0946+1006, to derive constraints on the substructure mass function in massive early-type host galaxies with an average redshift 〈z
lens〉 ∼ 0.2 and an average velocity dispersion 〈σeff〉 ∼ 270 km s−1. We perform a Bayesian inference on the substructure mass function, within a median region of about 32 kpc2 around the Einstein radius (〈R
ein〉 ∼ 4.2 kpc). We infer a mean projected substructure mass fraction f =
$0.0076_{-0.0052}^{+0.0208}$
at the 68 per cent confidence level and a substructure mass function slope α < 2.93 at the 95 per cent confidence level for a uniform prior probability density on α. For a Gaussian prior based on cold dark matter (CDM) simulations, we infer f =
$0.0064^{+0.0080}_{-0.0042}$
and a slope of α =
$1.90^{+0.098}_{-0.098}$
at the 68 per cent confidence level. Since only one substructure was detected in the full sample, we have little information on the mass function slope, which is therefore poorly constrained (i.e. the Bayes factor shows no positive preference for any of the two models). The inferred fraction is consistent with the expectations from CDM simulations and with inference from flux ratio anomalies at the 68 per cent confidence level.
Realizing Refsdal's original idea from 1964, we present estimates of the Hubble constant that are complementary to, and potentially competitive with, those of other cosmological probes. We use the ...observed positions of 89 multiple images, with extensive spectroscopic information, from 28 background sources and the measured time delays between the images S1-S4 and SX of supernova "Refsdal" (z = 1.489), which were obtained thanks to Hubble Space Telescope deep imaging and Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer data. We extend the strong-lensing modeling of the Hubble Frontier Fields galaxy cluster MACS J1149.5+2223 (z = 0.542), published by Grillo et al. (2016), and explore different ΛCDM models. Taking advantage of the lensing information associated to the presence of very close pairs of multiple images at various redshifts, and to the extended surface brightness distribution of the SN Refsdal host, we can reconstruct the total mass-density profile of the cluster very precisely. The combined dependence of the multiple-image positions and time delays on the cosmological parameters allows us to infer the values of H0 and m with relative (1 ) statistical errors of, respectively, 6% (7%) and 31% (26%) in flat (general) cosmological models, assuming a conservative 3% uncertainty on the final time delay of image SX and, remarkably, no priors from other cosmological experiments. Our best estimate of H0, based on the model described in this work, will be presented when the final time-delay measurement becomes available. Our results show that it is possible to utilize time delays in lens galaxy clusters as an important alternative tool for measuring the expansion rate and the geometry of the universe.
We report the detection of a dark substructure – undetected in the Hubble Space Telescope HST ACS F814W image – in the gravitational lens galaxy SDSSJ0946+1006 (the ‘double Einstein ring’), through ...direct gravitational imaging. The detection of a small mass concentration in the surface density maps, at 4.3 kpc from the galaxy centre, has a strong statistical significance. We confirm this detection by modelling the substructure with a tidally truncated pseudo-Jaffe density profile; in that case the substructure mass is Msub= (3.51 ± 0.15) × 109 M⊙, precisely where also the surface density map shows a strong convergence peak (Bayes factor ; equivalent to a ∼16σ detection). The result is robust under substantial changes in the model. We set a lower limit of (M/L)V,⊙≳ 120 M⊙/LV,⊙ (3σ) inside a sphere of 0.3 kpc centred on the substructure (rtidal= 1.1 kpc). The mass and luminosity limit of this substructure are consistent with Local Group results if the substructure had a virial mass of ∼1010 M⊙ before accretion and formed at z≳ 10. Our detection implies a projected dark matter mass fraction in substructure at the radius of the inner Einstein ring of f= 2.15+2.05−1.25 per cent 68 per cent confidence level (CL) in the mass range 4 × 106– 4 × 109 M⊙, assuming α= 1.9 ± 0.1 (with dN/dm∝m−α). Assuming a flat prior on α, between 1.0 and 3.0, increases this to f= 2.56+3.26−1.50 per cent (68 per cent CL). The likelihood ratio is ∼0.5 between these fractions and that from simulations (fN-body≈ 0.003). Hence the inferred dark matter mass fraction in substructure, admittedly based on a single-lens system, is large but still consistent with predictions.
ABSTRACT We give an overview of the Grism Lens Amplified Survey from Space (GLASS), a large Hubble Space Telescope program aimed at obtaining grism spectroscopy of the fields of 10 massive clusters ...of galaxies at redshift z = 0.308-0.686, including the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF). The Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) yields near-infrared spectra of the cluster cores covering the wavelength range 0.81-1.69 m through grisms G102 and G141, while the Advanced Camera for Surveys in parallel mode provides G800L spectra of the infall regions of the clusters. The WFC3 spectra are taken at two almost orthogonal position angles in order to minimize the effects of confusion. After summarizing the scientific drivers of GLASS, we describe the sample selection as well as the observing strategy and data processing pipeline. We then utilize MACS J0717.5+3745, a HFF cluster and the first one observed by GLASS, to illustrate the data quality and the high-level data products. Each spectrum brighter than is visually inspected by at least two co-authors and a redshift is measured when sufficient information is present in the spectra. Furthermore, we conducted a thorough search for emission lines through all of the GLASS WFC3 spectra with the aim of measuring redshifts for sources with continuum fainter than We provide a catalog of 139 emission-line-based spectroscopic redshifts for extragalactic sources, including three new redshifts of multiple image systems (one probable, two tentative). In addition to the data itself, we also release software tools that are helpful to navigate the data.
We present a full data analysis of the pure-parallel Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging observations in the Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies Survey (BoRGz9) in Cycle 22. The medium-deep exposures ...with five HST/WFC3IR+UVIS filter bands from 79 independent sightlines (∼370 arcmin2) provide the least biased determination of number density for z 9 bright galaxies against cosmic variance. After a strict two-step selection for candidate galaxies, including dropout color and photometric redshift analyses, and revision of previous BoRG candidates, we identify one source at z ∼ 10 and two sources at z ∼ 9. The z ∼ 10 candidate shows evidence of line-of-sight lens magnification ( ∼ 1.5), yet it appears surprisingly luminous ( mag), making it one of the brightest candidates at known (∼0.3 mag brighter than the z = 8.68 galaxy EGSY8p7, spectroscopically confirmed by Zitrin and collaborators). For z ∼ 9 candidates, we include previous data points at fainter magnitudes and find that the data are well fitted by a Schechter luminosity function with , mag, and Mpc−3 mag−1, for the first time without fixing any parameters. The inferred cosmic star formation rate density is consistent with unaccelerated evolution from lower redshift.
We present Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) observations in the core of the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) galaxy cluster MACS J1149.5+2223, where the first magnified and spatially resolved ...multiple images of supernova (SN) "Refsdal" at redshift 1.489 were detected. Thanks to a Director's Discretionary Time program with the Very Large Telescope and the extraordinary efficiency of MUSE, we measure 117 secure redshifts with just 4.8 hr of total integration time on a single 1 arcmin super(2) target pointing. We spectroscopically confirm 68 galaxy cluster members, with redshift values ranging from 0.5272 to 0.5660, and 18 multiple images belonging to seven background, lensed sources distributed in redshifts between 1.240 and 3.703. Starting from the combination of our catalog with those obtained from extensive spectroscopic and photometric campaigns using the Hubble Space Telescope(HST), we select a sample of 300 (164 spectroscopic and 136 photometric) cluster members, within approximately 500 kpc from the brightest cluster galaxy, and a set of 88 reliable multiple images associated with 10 different background source galaxies and 18 distinct knots in the spiral galaxy hosting SN "Refsdal." We exploit this valuable information to build six detailed strong-lensing models, the best of which reproduces the observed positions of the multiple images with an rms offset of only 0".26. We use these models to quantify the statistical and systematic errors on the predicted values of magnification and time delay of the next emerging image of SN "Refsdal." We find that its peak luminosity should occur between 2016 March and June and should be approximately 20% fainter than the dimmest (S4) of the previously detected images but above the detection limit of the planned HST/WFC3 follow-up. We present our two-dimensional reconstruction of the cluster mass density distribution and of the SN "Refsdal" host galaxy surface brightness distribution. We outline the road map toward even better strong-lensing models with a synergetic MUSE and HST effort.
We present a new measurement of the Hubble Constant H sub( 0) and other cosmological parameters based on the joint analysis of three multiply imaged quasar systems with measured gravitational time ...delays. First, we measure the time delay of HE 0435-1223 from 13-yr light curves obtained as part of the COSMOGRAIL project. Companion papers detail the modelling of the main deflectors and line-of-sight effects, and how these data are combined to determine the time-delay distance of HE 0435-1223. Crucially, the measurements are carried out blindly with respect to cosmological parameters in order to avoid confirmation bias. We then combine the time-delay distance of HE 0435-1223 with previous measurements from systems B1608+656 and RXJ1131-1231 to create a Time Delay Strong Lensing probe (TDSL). In flat Lambda cold dark matter ( Lambda CDM) with free matter and energy density, we find H sub( 0) =71.9... km s super( -1) Mpc super( -1) and Omega sub( Lambda )=0.62... This measurement is completely independent of, and in agreement with, the local distance ladder measurements of H sub( 0). We explore more general cosmological models combining TDSL with other probes, illustrating its power to break degeneracies inherent to other methods. The joint constraints from TDSL and Planck are H sub( 0) = 69.2... km s super( -1) Mpc super( -1) , Omega sub( Lambda )=0.70... and Omega sub( k)=0.003+0.004-0.006 in open ...CDM and H sub( 0) =79.0... km s super( -1) Mpc super( -1), Omega sub( de)=0.77... and w=-1.38... in flat wCDM. In combination with Planck and baryon acoustic oscillation data, when relaxing the constraints on the numbers of relativistic species we find N sub( eff) = 3.34... in N sub( eff) Lambda CDM and when relaxing the total mass of neutrinos we find ...m sub( ...) less than or equal to ...0.182 eV in m sub( nu )...CDM. Finally, in an open wCDM in combination with Planck and cosmic microwave background lensing, we find H sub( 0) =77.9... km s super( -1) Mpc super( -1), Omega sub( de) = 0.77..., Omega sub( k) = -0.003... and w=-1.37...
