Stock size and status of red mullet Mullus barbatus were assessed via virtual population analysis and yield prediction analysis using on-board observed length-frequency catch data from the ...north-eastern Mediterranean Sea. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters obtained were L∞ = 35.4 cm, k = 0.42, t0 = 0.64, tanc = 0.59 and Φ′ = 2.72. Trawl-type selectivity ogive was calculated as 1.57 years corresponding to 17.1 cm TL. The virtual population analysis of M. barbatus indicated that the minimum and maximum fishing mortalities were 0.01 yr–1 and 11.1 yr–1 for the mid-length groups for 8.5 cm and 21.5 cm respectively. The estimated lowest mean biomass and yield were 3.541 t and 31 t at length 8.5, and the highest mean biomass and yield were 13.880 t at length 22.5 cm and 46.086 t at length 21.5 cm respectively. Biological reference points were FMSY = 5.85, F0.5 = 2.3, EMSY = 0.89, E0.5 = 0.77. The values for the current fishing mortality coefficient (Fcur) and the current exploitation rate (Ecur) calculated were 5.3 and 0.89 respectively. The present biological reference points indicate that the stock of M. barbatus in the investigated area is overexploited status and needs urgent management considerations.
This study examined the age distribution and growth characteristics of the striped eel catfish (
), which is an invasive alien species in the eastern Mediterranean. A total of 1,011 samples were ...collected from Iskenderun Bay (Turkey), with lengths ranging from 5.1 to 16.8 cm, predominantly comprising females (1:1.92). Age 3 represented the majority in the population (52.03%). The value of the scaling exponent "b" of the length-weight relationship was less than "3" for both sexes (females: 2.28; males: 2.26; combined: 2.27). The results for the von Bertalanffy growth parameters were observed for the combined sexes as, L
= 24.9934 cm, k = 0.1718 year
, and t₀ = -1.7707 years. The striped eel catfish populations in Iskenderun Bay exhibited negative allometric growth patterns and were predominantly composed of adult individuals. This study presents the dataset on the length-weight correlations, age-growth characteristics, and von Bertalanffy growth parameters of
in the Mediterranean Sea, thereby significantly contributing to comprehending the stock dynamics. It is anticipated that this study will make a significant contribution to the management of
stocks, given its invasive nature.
This study was performed to investigate certain major and toxic metal concentrations in different tissues of three demersal fish species (
Triglia lucerna,
Lophius budegassa,
Solea lascaris). ...Generally, skin and liver exhibited higher metal concentrations than did muscle. Sodium and arsenic concentrations were found at higher levels in muscle tissues than in livers and skin, while zinc and nickel in different organs were classified as follows: skin
>
liver
>
muscle tissues. The concentrations of trace metals in fish samples indicated that
S. lascaris was more contaminated than were other fish species, followed by
L. budegassa and
T. lucerna. It may be concluded that consumption of these species from this region is not likely to pose a threat for human health. However, although the concentrations are below the limit values for fish muscles, a potential danger may emerge in the future, depending on domestic waste waters and industrial activities in the region. Therefore, further monitoring programmes should be conducted.
Hydroxyapatite and associated calcium phosphate ceramic materials are commonly applied as implant resources because oftheir close resemblance in structure with natural bone. In the present study, the ...elemental composition and potential usage ofpufferfish teeth were examined as natural bioceramic for dental applications. The teeth of pufferfish Lagocephalus sceleratuswere removed from the fish, rinsed with deionized water, measured, and kept in the furnace at 105 oC. The dehydrated teethwere pulverized with the planetary ball. ICP-MS, TTX, XRD, and nanoindentation test analyzes were made on the obtainedhydroxyapatite. In the ICP-MS analysis, the elemental composition of the teeth was 52% calcium, 39% phosphate, %2.5 Mn,%1.5 Mg, %1 Ti, %0.8 V, and %3.2 the others. Ca/P atomic ratio value was 1.32. The present study preliminary revealed thatthe use of pufferfish teeth can be a natural alternative source for biomedical and other industrial purposes since it has noeconomic value and is very abundant in the world marine waters. On the other hand, the required tests are mandatory to beaccomplished before any human use. KCI Citation Count: 0
Underwater visual census (UVC) is a commonly used approach for assessing fish density and biomass. Iskenderun Bay, comprising the Samandağ coast in Turkey, is the most important introduction pathway ...of alien species in the northeastern Mediterranean. In this study, the density, abundance, distribution and interaction of invasive lionfish or devil firefish
were assessed using the UVC method on the Samandağ coast. The total transect area monitored on the Samandağ coast was 4.500 m
. Species richness, Shannon’s diversity index and rate of biomass were 25, 1.81 and 73.5 m
, respectively. Reduced diversity was observed with increasing depths. The sandy seafloor was a limiting factor for lionfish distribution. There was a significant positive correlation between lionfish total density and both the Shannon diversity index (r = 0.99, P<0.001) and Shannon evenness index (r = 0.99, P<0.05). A high number of significant positive correlations (P<0.05) were detected between the occurrence of lionfish and the occurrence of both the native species and other alien species. The first stock assessment study of lionfish by the UVC method in Turkish marine waters revealed that native species are under very high pressure from lionfish species, especially Chromis, Sparids and Wrasses, indicating negative effects of lionfish on regional native biodiversity.
In this study, the length-weight data for bluespotted cornetfish, Fistularia commersonii in the Iskenderun Bay (NE Mediterranean Sea, Türkiye) was reported. F. commersonii specimens were caught from ...Iskenderun Bay between September 2018 and March 2019. The total length and total weight of both sexes varied from 23.0-108.1 cm and 4.0-599.58 g. International fish trade reached an import value of 62.8 billion Euro in 2006, of which 44.6% are covered by the European Union. Species identification is a key problem throughout the life cycle of ...fishes: from eggs and larvae to adults in fisheries research and control, as well as processed fish products in consumer protection.
This study aims to evaluate the applicability of the three mitochondrial genes 16S rRNA (16S), cytochrome b (cyt b), and cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) for the identification of 50 European marine fish species by combining techniques of "DNA barcoding" and microarrays. In a DNA barcoding approach, neighbour Joining (NJ) phylogenetic trees of 369 16S, 212 cyt b, and 447 COI sequences indicated that cyt b and COI are suitable for unambiguous identification, whereas 16S failed to discriminate closely related flatfish and gurnard species. In course of probe design for DNA microarray development, each of the markers yielded a high number of potentially species-specific probes in silico, although many of them were rejected based on microarray hybridisation experiments. None of the markers provided probes to discriminate the sibling flatfish and gurnard species. However, since 16S-probes were less negatively influenced by the "position of label" effect and showed the lowest rejection rate and the highest mean signal intensity, 16S is more suitable for DNA microarray probe design than cty b and COI. The large portion of rejected COI-probes after hybridisation experiments (>90%) renders the DNA barcoding marker as rather unsuitable for this high-throughput technology.
Based on these data, a DNA microarray containing 64 functional oligonucleotide probes for the identification of 30 out of the 50 fish species investigated was developed. It represents the next step towards an automated and easy-to-handle method to identify fish, ichthyoplankton, and fish products.
The pufferfishes are invasive alien fish species in the Mediterranean Sea with a powerful toxin in its body called tetrodotoxin.
It has no economic value and is very abundant all over the world’s ...marine waters. Calcium phosphate bioceramic materialsespecially hydroxyapatite are commonly applied as implant resources because of their close resemblance in structure withnatural bone. In this study, natural hydroxyapatite was obtained from the teeth of four pufferfish, the obtained products werecharacterised and their potential uses in the biomedical industry were revealed. Pufferfish teeth were extracted from the fish, thoroughly rinsed using deionized water, measured, and subsequently placed within a furnace set at a temperature of 105 °C.
Once dehydrated, the teeth were finely pulverized using a planetary ball mill. This powdered material was then subjected tovarious analyses, including elemental composition assessment, TTX analysis, and SEM-EDX examinations. Ca/P atomic ratiovalues of Lagocephalus suezensis, L. guentheri, Sphoeroides pachygaster and Torguigener favimaculasus teeth were obtainedas 1.58, 1.64, 1.67 and 1.47, respectively. The analysis findings suggest that pufferfish teeth could serve as a promising naturalalternative source for biomedical and various other industries in need of natural hydroxyapatite. This hydroxyapatite can beutilized for creating fillers, implants, bone powder, and prostheses with applications in biomedicine and various industries.
However, it should not be forgotten that the necessary tests must be carried out before any human use is made available. KCI Citation Count: 0
Risso's dolphin Grampus griseus was stranded on the coast of Arsuz-Ulucinar, Iskenderun Bay, Turkey in the northeastern Mediterranean on 29 March 2022. This study was conducted to reveal the ...relationship between G. griseus and microplastic debris in the northeastern Mediterranean Sea. The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of one stranding G. griseus was examined, and 454 microplastics particles were extracted. Of all, the majority of them were fibers (96%), black in colour (62%), and 0.5-1 mm in size (38%). This paper represents the first data indicating the microplastic abundance in G. griseus from the northeastern Mediterranean Sea. Also, it creates a baseline to understand the relationship between cetaceans and microplastics in this region. Keywords: Stranding dolphin, microplastic pollution, Iskenderun Bay, marine litter
