Taxes and subsidies are increasingly being considered as potential policy instruments to incentivize consumers to improve their food and beverage consumption patterns and related health ...outcomes. This study provided a systematic review of recent U.S. studies on the price elasticity of demand for sugar‐sweetened beverages (SSBs), fast food, and fruits and vegetables, as well as the direct associations of prices/taxes with body weight outcomes. Based on the recent literature, the price elasticity of demand for SSBs, fast food, fruits and vegetables was estimated to be −1.21, −0.52, −0.49 and −0.48, respectively. The studies that linked soda taxes to weight outcomes showed minimal impacts on weight; however, they were based on existing state‐level sales taxes that were relatively low. Higher fast‐food prices were associated with lower weight outcomes particularly among adolescents, suggesting that raising prices would potentially impact weight outcomes. Lower fruit and vegetable prices were generally found to be associated with lower body weight outcomes among both low‐income children and adults, suggesting that subsidies that would reduce the cost of fruits and vegetables for lower‐socioeconomic populations may be effective in reducing obesity. Pricing instruments should continue to be considered and evaluated as potential policy instruments to address public health risks.
In Arabidopsis thaliana, the bHLH transcription factor, GLABRA3 (AtGL3), is an important regulator of epidermal cell differentiation and positively controls anthocyanin accumulation. In contrast, we ...previously showed that Solanum lycopersicum GLABRA3 (SlGL3), the AtGL3 homolog, suppressed anthocyanin accumulation in Arabidopsis. To clarify this functional discrepancy in anthocyanin accumulation, we analyzed the SlGL3 expression pattern in anthocyanin-induced tomato. The SlGL3 expression was significantly reduced in tomato seedlings rich in anthocyanin as a result of inorganic phosphate (Pi) starvation. This was consistent with the previous result obtained in Arabidopsis, wherein the overexpression of SlGL3 was shown to inhibit anthocyanin accumulation. Our study suggests that the function of SlGL3 is different from that of AtGL3, and it might inhibit anthocyanin accumulation in tomato.
: Diabetic neuropathy is a life‐threatening complication involving both peripheral and autonomic nerves. The hyperglycemia‐induced polyol pathway as well as enhanced oxidative stress are among the ...factors implicated in the pathogenesis of diabetic neuropathy. Their effects are possibly exerted by direct nerve tissue damage or mediated by endothelial injury or vascular dysfunction. Formation of advanced glycation end product (AGE) is another important candidate for the cause of peripheral neuropathy. Indeed, the levels of AGEs were increased in the serum and also in the peripheral nerves obtained from diabetic patients. Structural and functional proteins of those nerves are also glycated, resulting in impaired nerve function and characteristic pathologic alterations. In addition, interaction between AGEs and their receptors induce biological effects on the target tissues for diabetic complications. In the peripheral nerve, the receptor for AGE (RAGE) is expressed in endothelial and Schwann cells. It is thus anticipated that interactions between AGEs and RAGE facilitate endoneural vascular dysfunction, leading to microangiopathy in the peripheral nerve. The roles of these mechanisms, in particular on the molecular mechanisms of AGE‐RAGE interactions in the development of diabetic neuropathy are largely still speculative and yet to be explored.
Wintertime warm extremes in the high Arctic, primarily associated with intrusions of moist airmasses from the midlatitudes, have occurred with an ostensibly high frequency in recent years. Here, we ...compute the temperature anomaly return values associated with such events for long return times. Our approach, which we term space‐time maxima–exposure (STM–E), improves on conventional extreme value estimates performed on a single‐location basis by explicitly taking into account the spatial structure of the moisture intrusions driving the temperature extremes. We specifically show that the STM–E approach provides spatially smoother return value estimates, a lower uncertainty in the parameters of the extreme value distribution fits and mitigates the single‐location underestimation of the magnitude of return values of temperature extremes.
We compute return values for wintertime warm extremes in the high Arctic, associated with intrusions of moist airmasses from the midlatitudes. Our approach, unlike conventional extreme value theory, takes into account the spatial structure of the moisture intrusions. The figure shows the 100‐year return values for the warm extremes (K), as deviations from the climatology.
We review the main results obtained by the BRAHMS Collaboration on the properties of hot and dense hadronic and partonic matter produced in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC. A ...particular focus of this paper is to discuss to what extent the results collected so far by BRAHMS, and by the other three experiments at RHIC, can be taken as evidence for the formation of a state of deconfined partonic matter, the so-called quark–gluon plasma (QGP). We also discuss evidence for a possible precursor state to the QGP, i.e., the proposed color glass condensate.

The nuclear shell structure, which originates in the nearly independent motion of nucleons in an average potential, provides an important guide for our understanding of nuclear structure and the ...underlying nuclear forces. Here, we present experimental evidence for the smallest SO-originated magic number (subshell closure) at the proton number six in
C obtained from systematic analysis of point-proton distribution radii, electromagnetic transition rates and atomic masses of light nuclei. Performing ab initio calculations on
C, we show that the observed proton distribution radii and subshell closure can be explained by the state-of-the-art nuclear theory with chiral nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon forces, which are rooted in the quantum chromodynamics.
Clustering in low density nuclear matter has been investigated using the NIMROD multidetector at Texas A&M University. Thermal coalescence modes were employed to extract densities, ρ, and ...temperatures, T, for evolving systems formed in collisions of 47A MeV (40)Ar+(112)Sn, (124)Sn and (64)Zn+(112)Sn, (124)Sn. The yields of d, t, (3)He, and (4)He have been determined at ρ=0.002 to 0.03 nucleons/fm(3) and T=5 to 11 MeV. The experimentally derived equilibrium constants for α particle production are compared with those predicted by a number of astrophysical equations of state. The data provide important new constraints on the model calculations.
The fecal occult blood test (FOBT) is recommended as a screening test for colorectal cancer, but there are few reliable studies on the accuracy of immunochemical FOBT. The aim of this study was to ...analyze the sensitivity of immunochemical FOBT and to compare the results with the findings from complete colonoscopy.
Asymptomatic adults underwent 1-time immunochemical FOBT and total colonoscopy simultaneously. The prevalence and location of colorectal neoplasia were determined by colonoscopy. The results of immunochemical FOBT and the colonoscopic findings were compared.
Of 21,805 patients, immunochemical FOBT was positive in 1231 cases (5.6%). The sensitivity of 1-time immunochemical FOBT for detecting advanced neoplasia and invasive cancer was 27.1% and 65.8%, respectively. In addition, the sensitivity for invasive cancer according to Dukes' stage showed 50.0% for Dukes' stage A, 70.0% for Dukes' stage B, and 78.3% for Dukes' stages C or D. The sensitivity for detecting advanced neoplasia at the proximal colon was significantly lower than that detected in the distal colon (16.3% vs 30.7%, P = .00007).
Although the screening of asymptomatic patients with immunochemical FOBT can identify patients with colorectal neoplasia to a certain extent, the sensitivity is relatively low and different according to the tumor location. Therefore, programmatic and repeated screening by immunochemical FOBT may be necessary to increase sensitivity for colorectal cancer detection.
