The thermal radiative properties of glazing materials are fundamental inputs for evaluating the energetic performance and thermal behaviour of buildings. These properties are required for many ...practical applications ranging from infrared thermography to building performance simulation and thermal comfort evaluations. Soda–lime–silica glass is the most widely used glass, worldwide, for glazing and the derivation of its thermal and optical properties are the subject of this work. Based on experimentally acquired spectral reference measurement data for soda-lime glass, the complex-valued Fresnel equations are solved and Monte-Carlo integration is carried out over the black-body spectrum, as well as over the hemisphere. These calculations are performed for various radiative temperatures to establish their temperature dependencies, and additionally the temperature-dependent transmittance of soda-lime glass was analysed. By applying a non-linear optimisation algorithm, computationally efficient practical fitting formulae for the angular reflectivity, emissivity and absorptivity are derived. All equations are numerically solved with a high degree of accuracy. The determination of the hemispherical total emissivity for this type of glass confirms the current accepted value (∼0.2%) originally derived by Rubin (1985). A simple yet robust experimental design, based on thermography, is used to validate the results of the numerical reflectivity model. Additionally, we provide angular functions, fitting functions and additional constants that were hitherto unavailable. The practical benefits of the fitting formulae provided are considerable in relation to modelling the reflection of thermal radiation on glazed surfaces, and are demonstrated in two case-study applications in the appendix.

Humans have a strong tendency to affiliate with other people, especially in emotional situations. Here, we suggest that a critical mechanism underlying this tendency is that socially sharing ...emotional experiences is in itself perceived as hedonically positive and thereby contributes to the regulation of individual emotions. We investigated the effect of social sharing of emotions on subjective feelings and neural activity by having pairs of friends view emotional (negative and positive) and neutral pictures either alone or with the friend. While the two friends remained physically separated throughout the experiment-with one undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging and the other performing the task in an adjacent room-they were made aware on a trial-by-trial basis whether they were seeing pictures simultaneously with their friend (shared) or alone (unshared). Ratings of subjective feelings were improved significantly when participants viewed emotional pictures together than alone, an effect that was accompanied by activity increase in ventral striatum and medial orbitofrontal cortex, two important components of the reward circuitry. Because these effects occurred without any communication or interaction between the friends, they point to an important proximate explanation for the basic human motivation to affiliate with others, particularly in emotional situations.
Abstract The effect of hydration on the mechanical properties of osteonal bone, in directions parallel and perpendicular to the bone axis, was studied on three length scales: (i) the mineralized ...fibril level (~100 nm), (ii) the lamellar level (~6 µm); and (iii) the osteon level (up to ~30 µm).We used a number of techniques, namely atomic force microscopy (AFM), nanoindentation and microindentation. The mechanical properties (stiffness, modulus and/or hardness) have been studied under dry and wet conditions. On all three length scales the mechanical properties under dry conditions were found to be higher by 30–50% compared to wet conditions. Also the mechanical anisotropy, represented by the ratio between the properties in directions parallel and perpendicular to the osteon axis (anisotropy ratio, designated here by AnR), surprisingly decreased somewhat upon hydration. AFM imaging of osteonal lamellae revealed a disappearance of the distinctive lamellar structure under wet conditions. Altogether, these results suggest that a change in mineralized fibril orientation takes place upon hydration.
Lung transplant survival is limited by obliterative bronchiolitis (OB), but the mechanisms of OB development are unknown. Previous studies in a mouse model of orthotopic lung transplantation ...suggested a requirement for IL‐17. We have used this orthotopic mouse model to investigate the source of IL‐17A and the requirement for T cells producing IL‐17A. The major sources of IL‐17A were CD4+ T cells and γδ T cells. Depletion of CD4+ T cells led to a significantly decreased frequency and number of IL‐17A+ lymphocytes and was sufficient to prevent acute rejection and OB. However, mice with STAT3‐deficient T cells, which are unable to differentiate into Th17 cells, rejected lung allografts and developed OB similar to control mice. The frequency of IL‐17A+ cells was not decreased in mice with STAT3‐deficient T cells due mainly to the presence of IL‐17A+ γδ T cells. Deficiency of γδ T cells also did not affect the development of airway fibrosis. Our data suggest that CD4+ T cells are required for OB development and expansion of IL‐17A responses in the lung, while Th17 and γδ T cells are not absolutely required and may compensate for each other.
This study finds that CD4+ T cell deficiency attenuates the IL‐17 immune response and prevents lung transplant obliterative bronchiolitis in a mouse model, but the absence of either major source of IL‐17, Th17 cells or yδ T cells, is not sufficient to prevent allograft rejection and airway fibrosis.
The vital enzyme O-linked β-N-acetylglucosamine transferase (OGT) catalyzes the O-GlcNAcylation of intracellular proteins coupling the metabolic status to cellular signaling and transcription ...pathways. Aberrant levels of O-GlcNAc and OGT have been linked to metabolic diseases as cancer and diabetes. Here, a new series of peptidomimetic OGT inhibitors was identified highlighting the compound LQMed 330, which presented better IC50 compared to the most potent inhibitors found in the literature. Molecular modeling study of selected inhibitors into the OGT binding site provided insight into the behavior by which these compounds interact with the enzyme. The results obtained in this study provided new perspectives on the design and synthesis of highly specific OGT inhibitors.

We present high signal-to-noise measurements of three-point shear correlations and the third moment of the mass aperture statistic using the first 3 years of data from the Dark Energy Survey. We ...additionally obtain the first measurements of the configuration and scale dependence of the four three-point shear correlations which carry cosmological information. With the third-order mass aperture statistic, we present tomographic measurements over angular scales of 4 to 60 arcminutes with a combined statistical significance of 15.0σ. Using the tomographic information and measuring also the second-order mass aperture, we additionally obtain a skewness parameter and its redshift evolution. We find that the amplitudes and scale-dependence of these shear 3pt functions are in qualitative agreement with measurements in a mock galaxy catalog based on N-body simulations, indicating promise for including them in future cosmological analyses. We validate our measurements by showing that B-modes, parity-violating contributions and PSF modeling uncertainties are negligible, and determine that the measured signals are likely to be of astrophysical and gravitational origin.
The Earth Observing System (EOS) Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) aboard the Aura satellite has provided essentially daily global measurements of ozone (O3) profiles from the upper troposphere to the ...upper mesosphere since August of 2004. This paper focuses on validation of the MLS stratospheric standard ozone product and its uncertainties, as obtained from the 240 GHz radiometer measurements, with a few results concerning mesospheric ozone. We compare average differences and scatter from matched MLS version 2.2 profiles and coincident ozone profiles from other satellite instruments, as well as from aircraft lidar measurements taken during Aura Validation Experiment (AVE) campaigns. Ozone comparisons are also made between MLS and balloon‐borne remote and in situ sensors. We provide a detailed characterization of random and systematic uncertainties for MLS ozone. We typically find better agreement in the comparisons using MLS version 2.2 ozone than the version 1.5 data. The agreement and the MLS uncertainty estimates in the stratosphere are often of the order of 5%, with values closer to 10% (and occasionally 20%) at the lowest stratospheric altitudes, where small positive MLS biases can be found. There is very good agreement in the latitudinal distributions obtained from MLS and from coincident profiles from other satellite instruments, as well as from aircraft lidar data along the MLS track.
The coupling of laser energy to electrons is fundamental to almost all topics in intense laser-plasma interactions, including laser-driven particle and radiation generation, relativistic optics, ...inertial confinement fusion and laboratory astrophysics. We report measurements of total energy absorption in foil targets ranging in thickness from 20 μm, for which the target remains opaque and surface interactions dominate, to 40 nm, for which expansion enables relativistic-induced transparency and volumetric interactions. We measure a total peak absorption of ∼80% at an optimum thickness of ∼380 nm. For thinner targets, for which some degree of transparency occurs, although the total absorption decreases, the number of energetic electrons escaping the target increases. 2D particle-in-cell simulations indicate that this results from direct laser acceleration of electrons as the intense laser pulse propagates within the target volume. The results point to a trade-off between total energy coupling to electrons and efficient acceleration to higher energies.
Two of the most sensitive probes of the large scale structure of the universe are the clustering of galaxies and the tangential shear of background galaxy shapes produced by those foreground ...galaxies, so-called galaxy-galaxy lensing. Combining the measurements of these two two-point functions leads to cosmological constraints that are independent of the galaxy bias factor. The optimal choice of foreground, or lens, galaxies is governed by the joint, but conflicting requirements to obtain accurate redshift information and large statistics. We present cosmological results from the full 5000 sq. deg2 of the Dark Energy Survey first three years of observations (Y3) combining those two-point functions, using for the first time a magnitude-limited lens sample (MagLim) of 11 million galaxies especially selected to optimize such combination, and 100 million background shapes. We consider two cosmological models, flat ΛCDM and wCDM. In ΛCDM we obtain for the matter density Ωm = 0.320$^{+0.041}_{–0.034}$ and for the clustering amplitude S8 = σ8(Ωm/0.3)0.5 = 0.778$^{+0.037}_{–0.031}$, at 68% C.L. The latter is only 1σ smaller than the prediction in this model informed by measurements of the cosmic microwave background by the Planck satellite. In wCDM we find Ωm = 0.32$^{+0.044}_{–0.046}$, S8 = 0.777$^{+0.049}_{–0.051}$, and dark energy equation of state w = –1.031$^{+0.218}_{–0.379}$. We find that including smaller scales while marginalizing over non-linear galaxy bias improves the constraining power in the Ωm – S8 plane by 31% and in the Ωm – w plane by 41% while yielding consistent cosmological parameters from those in the linear bias case. Furthermore, these results are combined with those from cosmic shear in a companion paper to present full DES-Y3 constraints from the three two-point functions (3 x 2pt).
