= 795 nm), the current and temperature tuning coefficients, laser line width, threshold current and the polarization ellipse were performed for the aged lasers. The test was started with a number of 12 VCSELs consisting of 4 lasers each from 3 different suppliers. The aging behaviour of VCSELs was investigated with respect to the development of a new optical magnetometer prototype for space missions with a mission duration of up to 17 years. Only a limited change of the electro-optical parameters can be tolerated by the instrument design over the mission duration. The endurance test and the electro-optical characterizations revealed clear differences in the aging behaviour of the three suppliers. Lasers from one supplier showed that they can be operated for more than 17 years under vacuum conditions without major degradation of their operational parameters.

Nevertheless, the structured development of employees’ competences is one of the most important requirements for a successful implementation of Industry 4.0 strategies. This paper systematically evaluates a variety of conventional as well as modern teaching and learning methods for industrial logistics engineering education in the context of Industry 4.0. As such, a comparison of methods is presented and validated by using a systematic literature review as a research methodology. The identified methods are used to guarantee and/or extend quality assurance and, individual as well as collective, professional development in industrial logistics engineering education. Moreover, the authors have conducted a laboratory experiment for industrial logistics engineering education to evaluate the learning outcomes of lectures and a form of group work as two exemplary teaching and learning methods.

In this context, traditional approaches like Material Requirements Planning often lead to long lead-times and high Work In Progress due to weak responsiveness to fluctuations in demand. New strategies and concepts in the era of Industry 4.0, like real-time data, have the potential to improve traditional approaches. The paper evaluates the impact of different levels of planning granularity of various Production Planning and Control strategies to improve the logistics performance in a Make-to-Order production system. The effects of a monthly, a two-week and a weekly planning horizon are evaluated according to a Material Requirement Planning, KANBAN and Constant Work In Progress strategy. The approach is validated by using a Discrete Event Simulation based on data from an electronics manufacturing company working in the Make to Order environment.
Industry 5.0 and the associated transformation into Society 5.0 require a complete realignment of the skills required of the engineers of tomorrow. Thereby, the pre-dominant and policy-driven drivers ...of digitalization, and sustainability in particular, demand a complex variety of enhanced special competencies (e.g., lean thinking, data science skills) and transversal competencies from engineers working in manufacturing companies which must be systematically developed and continuously expanded. Since methodical approaches to systematic competence development in the environment of Industry 5.0-related engineering education are scarce, this article develops a competence profile for industrial logistics engineering education as an example of Industry 5.0-related vocational education and training initiatives. After elaborating on the relevant theoretical aspects of systematic competence development in adult education, an exemplary competence profile for industrial logistics engineering education is developed. Moreover, this paper presents a preliminary investigation of the impact of competencies on job performance and job satisfaction. The research results serve as a basis for the development of new teaching and learning concepts as well as for the investigation of causal relationships between competence-orientation and individual performance for industrial engineers in manufacturing enterprises.

Engineering education is seen as a critical investment for the further development of industry and society. However, future engineers will require more than just a strong technological background. Empirical-based success factors that contribute to the holistic reorientation of engineering education are typically researched in a fragmented manner and the focus on competence-orientation is frequently overlooked, especially in the Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) discipline. In this paper, the authors conduct a systematic literature review on engineering education with an emphasis on competence-based engineering education in the IEM discipline. Moreover, the authors provide fruitful implications for the competence-based realignment of engineering education, present an amalgamated overview of competences that are considered necessary for future engineering education, and provide a set of novel methods and tools.
In recent years, the systematic development of competencies based on the concept of Industry 4.0 can be considered as the main opportunity to strengthen the competitiveness of both small- and ...medium-sized enterprises and larger corporations. However, especially within the engineering disciplines, there still seems to be a lack of understanding in terms of building, respectively reshaping, application-orientated competence profiles according to the requirements and needs of industry and society. This paper designs an exemplary competence profile for industry logistics engineering education by referring to the recent literature on competence development. As a result, professional and transversal competences are discussed in the areas of inbound, production, and outbound logistics. The results can be used as a reference for the systematic development of transdisciplinary competence development within industrial engineering education initiatives.
