The chromatin structure of several Saccharomyces cerevisiae ADR1-dependent genes was comparatively analyzed in vivo in order to evaluate the role of promoter architecture in transcriptional control. ...In repressing conditions (high glucose) a nucleosome particle always obstructs the TATA box, immediately adjacent to an upstream-located nucleosome-free region containing a cluster of Adr1 binding sites. Upon derepression the TATA box-containing nucleosome is destabilized according to a mechanism shared by all of the genes studied. The transcription factor Adr1 is always required for the observed chromatin remodeling. mRNA accumulation of all of the genes analyzed is strongly delayed in the absence of the acetyltransferase Gcn5 and is decreased in the presence of a temperature-sensitive Esa1 mutant. The results suggest that a defined promoter chromatin structure, controlled by DNA conformational features, is relevant for the activation of coregulated genes.
Abstract Recent improvements in techniques in clinical assisted reproduction have led to an increased interest in the cryopreservation of human ovarian tissue as a way of preserving fertility and ...ovarian steroidogenic activity in young cancer patients. Acceptable follicular survival in frozen–thawed human ovarian tissue has generally been reported. Since a 0.3 mol/l sucrose concentration in cryopreservation solutions evidently increases human oocyte survival after cryopreservation, the aim of this study was to observe the effect of sucrose concentrations of 0.2 mol/l and 0.3 mol/l on human ovarian tissue survival after thawing. Ovarian cortical slices from 10 patients, 22–36 years of age, were cryopreserved slowly using 0.2 mol/l or 0.3 mol/l sucrose with 1,2-propanediol (1.5 mol/l) as the cryoprotectants. Light and electron microscopy were used for the histological analyses. Results showed that both treatments produced an increase in damaged cells; however, the use of 0.3 mol/l sucrose showed a smaller percentage of damaged germ cells than 0.2 mol/l sucrose, and therefore was less detrimental to the thawed ovarian tissue. However as the damage occurred principally in the stroma and follicular cells rather than in the oocytes, the suitability of these cryopreservation protocols must be further evaluated prior to considering the use of stored ovarian cortex for autografting after thawing.
A search for the neutral Higgs bosons predicted by the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) is presented. The analysis is performed on data from proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass ...energy of sqrt{s}=8 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider recorded by the ATLAS detector. The data were collected in 2012, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb-1 and represent the full 8 TeV dataset. This search is performed in the tau-tau final state, with one tau lepton decaying leptonically and the other hadronically. The analysis is optimized in three categories, addressing low-mass Higgs bosons which are accompanied by a bottom quark induced jet or not and high-mass Higgs bosons. No deviations from Standard Model predictions are observed, and therefore no evidences of new Higgs bosons are found. Exclusion limits are set on the cross-section times branching fraction of the Higgs bosons and for parameters m_A and tan{beta} of MSSM benchmark scenarios.
Charged lepton flavor violation is an unambiguous signature for New Physics. Here we present a summary of the theoretical and experimental status of the search for charged lepton flavor violation in ...heavy particle decays, in particular in the decays of the Z and Higgs bosons, and of the top quark. Decays of beyond-Standard-Model particles such as a Z' or an additional scalar particle are also discussed. Finally the prospects for such searches at proposed future electron-positron colliders are reviewed.

High performance flavour tagging of jets containing heavy flavours is crucial for the studies planned for the future high energy e
+e
− Linear Collider (LC). Pixel detectors have proven to provide ...very powerful flavour identification, for this reason the Linear Collider Flavour Identification collaboration has decided to concentrate its R&D work for the future LC on a Charged Coupled Device pixel vertex detector, and study the flavour tagging performance of the design to optimize it. In this work we first evaluate the basic tracking performance. We then estimate the flavour tagging performance of the present detector layout, using a neural network approach. We conclude by studying the energy dependence of the performance.
We report a case of right adnexal torsion during pregnancy after an oocyte in vitro maturation and intracitoplasmic sperm injection cycle in patient with polycystic ovary syndrome. A 31-year-old ...woman with a typical clinical disorder of polycystic ovarian syndrome was included in an oocyte in vitro maturation program. Right adnexal torsion occurred two days after embryo transfer, and laparoscopy detorsion was successfully performed with preservation of adnexa. The patient had a full-term pregnancy and delivered a healthy infant at 40 weeks of gestation. To our knowledge this is the first report of adnexal torsion after an oocyte in vitro maturation and intracitoplasmic sperm injection program.

was formed in 1998 with the purpose of exploring a new design for a CCD pixel vertex detector, to be deployed at the future e+e
− collider.
A very ambitious R&D programme has been laid out, and funding has been officially confirmed recently.
The programme will consist of multiple steps, the final goal being to produce a detector capable of being read out almost a thousand times faster than what has been done so far, with a material budget of less than 0.1% of a radiation length per layer and a polar angle coverage for tracks up to

In these proceedings I will describe the new design in detail, and report on the status of the R&D project.
A historico-religious study focusing on "priesthood" and "priest" has to face many difficulties, in terms of terminology and of content. On the one hand, it is methodologically incorrect to link ..."priesthood" to debated modern concepts such as "religion" or "cult" which, like the former, need to be (even conventionally) defined each time for every particular culture, and not to be assumed as universal keys of historical understanding. On the other hand, previous studies on the topic-where the aim has been to determine latent forms and/or particular manifestations of "priesthood" in other cultures and also to write a "general history" of this phenomenon-exhibit the total historical irrelevance of such an approach, based only on our modern (Christian) concept of "priest(hood)." In order to limit ethnocentrism and, at the same time, to employ useful conceptual categories, new heuristic parameters must be found. In addition to the criterion indicated by J. Rüpke (the religious specialist as a control-agent within the framework of symbolic systems), I propose to distinguish between professional specialisation and practical (cultic) function. The case study I present here to illustrate some aspects and problems of this research is that of ancient Syrian (Ugaritic) culture, where "priests" in our meaning are difficult to be found, whereas a fully new concept emerges if we look at the issue from a functional (and "emic") perspective.
