This paper presents a novel design of a Fabry-Perot (FP) resonator antenna with a wide gain bandwidth in X band. The bandwidth enhancement of the antenna is attributed to the positive reflection ...phase gradient of an electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structure, which is constructed by the combination of two complementary frequency selective surfaces (FSSs). To explain well the design procedure and approach, the EBG structure is modeled as an equivalent circuit and analyzed using the Smith Chart. Experimental results show that the antenna possesses a relative 3 dB gain bandwidth of 28%, from 8.6 GHz to 11.4 GHz, with a peak gain of 13.8 dBi. Moreover, the gain bandwidth can be well covered by the impedance bandwidth for the reflection coefficient ( S 11) below -10 dB from 8.6 GHz to 11.2 GHz.
A novel polarization-reconfigurable planar antenna is presented. The antenna consists of an electronically reconfigurable polarizer integrated with a printed slot. By changing the states of the p-i-n ...diodes on the polarizer, the linearly polarized (LP) waves radiated by the slot can be converted into either right-hand circularly polarized (RHCP) or left-hand CP (LHCP) waves. The polarizer contains 16 unit cells arranged as a 4 × 4 array. The antenna radiates RHCP waves if the p-i-n diodes on the top side of the polarizer are switched ON, while LHCP waves are radiated if the p-i-n diodes of the bottom side of the polarizer are switched ON instead. The physical mechanisms of the antenna are discussed and the parametric study is carried out by full-wave simulations. To verify the concept, one prototype at 2.5 GHz is designed, fabricated, and measured. Good agreement between the measured and simulated results is obtained. The antenna achieves a gain ≥8.5 dBic in both RHCP and LHCP with an aperture efficiency of 70%. Advantages of the proposed design include electronically reconfigurable polarizations for RHCP or LHCP, low profile, low cost, high isolation between the dc bias circuit and RF signals, high power handling capability, and easy extension to large-scale arrays without increasing the complexity of the dc bias circuit. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of an electronically polarization-reconfigurable CP antenna with a single-substrate polarizer.
A novel design of a dual-band antenna with integrated filtering performance is proposed. A low-profile aperture-coupled U-slot patch antenna is employed for the dual-band operation with a uniform ...polarization, which is fed by a dual-mode stub-loaded resonator (SLR). The U-slot patch works as a dual-mode resonator of the dual-band filter as well as the radiation element. The odd- and even-modes of the SLR are coupled and tuned with the U-slot patch, generating two second-order operation bands at 3.6 and 5.2 GHz. Compared with the traditional patch antenna, the proposed antenna exhibits improved bandwidth and frequency selectivity. In addition, the bandwidths can be controlled by adjusting the coupling strength between the SLR and the patch. Furthermore, the higher order harmonics can be suppressed over a broadband without increasing the footprint of the design. The measured and simulated results agree well with each other, showing excellent performance in terms of impedance matching, bandwidths, second-order filtering, out-of-band rejection, cross-polarization discrimination, and gains at both the bands.
The modulation of microglial polarization from the pro-inflammatory M1 to the anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype shows promise as a therapeutic strategy for ischemic stroke. Quercetin, a natural ...flavonoid abundant in various plants, possesses anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and antioxidant properties. Nevertheless, its effect and underlying mechanism on microglia/macrophages M1/M2 polarization in the treatment of cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury (CI/RI) remain poorly explored. In the current study, we observed that quercetin ameliorated neurological deficits, reduced infarct volume, decreased the number of M1 microglia/macrophages (CD16/32+/Iba1+), and enhanced the number of M2 microglia/macrophages (CD206+/Iba1+) after establishing the CI/RI model in rats. Subsequent in vivo and in vitro experiments indicated that quercetin downregulated M1 markers (CD86, iNOS, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6) and upregulated M2 markers (CD206, Arg-1, IL-10, and TGF-β). Network pharmacology analysis and molecular docking revealed that the PI3K/Akt/NF-κB signaling pathway emerged as the core pathway. Western blot confirmed that quercetin upregulated the phosphorylation of PI3K and Akt, while alleviating the phosphorylation of IκBα and NF-κB both in vivo and in vitro. However, the PI3K inhibitor LY294002 reversed the effects of quercetin on M2 polarization and the expression of key proteins in the PI3K/Akt/NF-κB pathway in primary microglia after oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R) in vitro. Collectively, our findings demonstrate that quercetin facilitates microglia/macrophages M2 polarization by modulating the PI3K/Akt/NF-κB signaling pathway in the treatment of CI/RI. These findings provide novel insights into the therapeutic mechanisms of quercetin in ischemic stroke.

This paper presents a novel shared-aperture dual-band dual-polarized (DBDP) high-gain antenna for potential applications in synthetic aperture radars (SARs). To reduce the complexity of SAR antennae, ...a DBDP high-gain antenna based on the concept of Fabry-Perot resonant cavity is designed. This antenna operates in both Cand X-bands with a frequency ratio of 1:1.8. To form two separate resonant cavities, two frequency selective surface layers are employed, leading to high flexibility in choosing desired frequencies for each band. The beam-scanning capability of this proposed antenna is also investigated, where a beam-scanning angle range of ±15° is achieved in two orthogonal polarizations. To verify this design concept, three passive antenna prototypes were designed, fabricated, and measured. One prototype has broadside radiation patterns, while the other two prototypes have frozen beam scanned to +15°. The measured results agree well with the simulated ones, showing that the high gain, high port isolation, and low cross-polarization levels are obtained in both the bands. Compared with the conventional high-gain DBDP SAR antennae, the proposed antenna has achieved a significant reduction in the complexity, mass, size, loss, and cost of the feed network.
Biofilters have been broadly applied to degrade the odorous gases from industrial emissions. A industrial scale biofilter was set up to treat the odorous gases. To explore biofilter potentials, the ...microbial community structure and function must be well defined. Using of improved biofilter, the differences in microbial community structures and functions in biofilters before and after treatment were investigated by metagenomic analysis. Odorous gases have the potential to alter the microbial community structure in the sludge of biofilter. A total of 90,016 genes assigned into various functional metabolic pathways were identified. In the improved biofilter, the dominant phyla were Proteobacteria, Planctomycetes, and Chloroflexi, and the dominant genera were Thioalkalivibrio, Thauera, and Pseudomonas. Several xenobiotic biodegradation-related pathways showed significant changes during the treatment process. Compared with the original biofilter, Thermotogae and Crenarchaeota phyla were significantly enriched in the improved biofilter, suggesting their important role in nitrogen-fixing. Furthermore, several nitrogen metabolic pathway-related genes, such as nirA and nifA, and sulfur metabolic pathway-related genes, such as fccB and phsA, were considered to be efficient genes that were involved in removing odorous gases. Our findings can be used for improving the efficiency of biofilter and helping the industrial enterprises to reduce the emission of waste gases.
This communication presents an a cylindrical active frequency selective surface (AFSS)-based electronically beam-switching antenna, which can operate at two different frequency bands. The antenna ...consists of a slot AFSS and an omnidirectional dual-band feed antenna. The p-i-n diodes of the AFSS can be switched on or off to reconfigure the AFSS as transparent or opaque to the incident electromagnetic waves, respectively. Thus, by controlling the dc bias voltages to different columns of p-i-n diodes, the directive beams of the antenna can be swept to cover the whole azimuth plane. To validate the design concept, the transmission coefficients of the active FSS sheet are experimentally examined. An antenna prototype operating at 2.5 and 5.3 GHz frequency bands is also fabricated and measured. Simulation and measurement results of the antenna are presented to verify the design principle. A comparison between this communication and other recent designs is provided. The antenna has advantages of low power, low cost, easy fabrication, and electronic beam switching covering a full 360° angular range.
Solid lubricating films have great advantages in extreme operating conditions. In this research, silver (Ag) was doped into the ZrMoN composite film to develop a composite polyphase structure with ...enhanced mechanical and tribological properties. A series of ZrMoN–Ag composite films with different Ag content were prepared. The results show that the composition phases of the composite films are fcc-Mo2N、fcc-ZrN, and nano-crystalline fcc-Ag was dispersed in the films. The ZrMoN–Ag composite films exhibited excellent mechanical properties with a hardness of 27.6 GPa and elastic modulus of 286.8 GPa. In addition, the ZrMoN–Ag composite film with Ag content of 11.88 at.% possessed the advantage of low friction coefficient in a wide temperature range, attributing mainly to the synergetic effect of Ag phase and friction oxidation products. This work provides a promising solution for designing solid self-lubrication composite in wide temperature domain.
Haplo-insufficiency of the GATA3 gene causes hypoparathyroidism, sensorineural hearing loss, and renal disease (HDR) syndrome. Previous studies have shown that Gata3 is required for the development ...of the prosensory domain and spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) of the mouse cochlea during embryogenesis. However, its role in supporting cells (SCs) after cell fate specification is largely unknown. In this study, we used tamoxifen-inducible Sox2CreERT2 mice to delete Gata3 in SCs of the neonatal mouse cochlea and showed that loss of Gata3 resulted in the proliferation of SCs, including the inner pillar cells (IPCs), inner border cells (IBCs), and lateral greater epithelium ridge (GER). In addition, loss of Gata3 resulted in the down-regulation of p27kip1, a cell cycle inhibitor, in the SCs of Gata3-CKO neonatal cochleae. Chromatin immunoprecipitation analysis revealed that GATA3 directly binds to p27kip1 promoter and could maintain the quiescent state of cochlear SCs by regulating p27kip1 expression. Furthermore, RNA-seq analysis revealed that loss of Gata3 function resulted in the change in the expression of genes essential for the development and function of cochlear SCs, including Tectb, Cyp26b1, Slitrk6, Ano1, and Aqp4.
This letter presents a new design of a Fabry-Perot resonator antenna (FPRA) with a wide gain bandwidth. A double-layered dielectric superstrate, which produces a reflection phase curve versus ...frequency with a positive slope, is used as a partially reflective surface (PRS) to enhance the bandwidth of the FPRA. For a physical insight, the PRS is analyzed by using the transmission line theory and Smith Chart. Experimental results demonstrate that the antenna has a 3-dB gain bandwidth over 13.5-17.5 GHz, relatively 25.8%, with a peak gain of 15 dBi. Furthermore, the gain band is overlapped well by the impedance band for the reflection coefficient ( S11) less than -10 dB.
