Membranes are recognized as a key component in many environment and energy‐related applications, but conventional membranes are challenged to satisfy the growing demand for ever more energy‐efficient ...processes. Janus membranes, a novel class with asymmetric properties on each side, have recently emerged and represent enticing opportunities to address this challenge. With an inner driving force arising from their asymmetric configuration, Janus membranes are appealing for enhancing energy efficiency in a variety of membrane processes by promoting the desired transport. Here, the fundamental principles to prepare Janus membranes with asymmetric surface wettability and charges are summarized, and how they work in conventional and unconventional membrane processes is demonstrated.
The rise of Janus membranes brings new opportunities to tackle challenges surrounding energy management, while also enabling novel functions that are not even viable when using conventional membranes.
Transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) is a secreted cytokine that regulates cell proliferation, migration, and the differentiation of a plethora of different cell types. Consistent with these ...findings, TGF-β plays a key role in controlling embryogenic development, inflammation, and tissue repair, as well as in maintaining adult tissue homeostasis. TGF-β elicits a broad range of context-dependent cellular responses, and consequently, alterations in TGF-β signaling have been implicated in many diseases, including cancer. During the early stages of tumorigenesis, TGF-β acts as a tumor suppressor by inducing cytostasis and the apoptosis of normal and premalignant cells. However, at later stages, when cancer cells have acquired oncogenic mutations and/or have lost tumor suppressor gene function, cells are resistant to TGF-β-induced growth arrest, and TGF-β functions as a tumor promotor by stimulating tumor cells to undergo the so-called epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). The latter leads to metastasis and chemotherapy resistance. TGF-β further supports cancer growth and progression by activating tumor angiogenesis and cancer-associated fibroblasts and enabling the tumor to evade inhibitory immune responses. In this review, we will consider the role of TGF-β signaling in cell cycle arrest, apoptosis, EMT and cancer cell metastasis. In particular, we will highlight recent insights into the multistep and dynamically controlled process of TGF-β-induced EMT and the functions of miRNAs and long noncoding RNAs in this process. Finally, we will discuss how these new mechanistic insights might be exploited to develop novel therapeutic interventions.

Traffic signals typically introduce vehicle stops along a trip and thus increase vehicle fuel consumption levels. In attempt to enhance vehicle fuel efficiency, eco-cooperative adaptive cruise ...control (Eco-CACC) systems are being developed that receive signal phasing and timing data from downstream signalized intersections via vehicle-to-infrastructure communication. In this paper, an Eco-CACC algorithm is developed that computes the fuel-optimum vehicle trajectory through a signalized intersection by ensuring that the vehicle arrives at the intersection stop bar just as the last queued vehicle is discharged. A simulation analysis demonstrates that the proposed Eco-CACC system produces vehicle fuel savings up to 40%, when the market penetration rate (MPR) is 100%. The results also demonstrate that for single-lane approaches, the algorithm reduces the overall fuel consumption levels for all vehicles, and that higher MPRs result in larger savings. Alternatively, on multi-lane approaches, lower MPRs produce negative impacts on the overall intersection fuel efficiency, and only when MPRs are greater than 30% does the algorithm produce overall intersection fuel consumption savings.
Background and Aims
There is growing evidence that single‐stranded, circular RNA (circRNA) plays a key role in the development of certain cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). It is less ...clear, however, what role circRNA plays in HCC metastasis.
Approach and Results
In this study, through circRNA sequencing, we identified a circRNA: circASAP1 (a circRNA derived from exons 2 and 3 of the ASAP1 gene, hsa_circ_0085616), which is associated with pulmonary metastasis after curative resection in patients with HCC. CircASAP1 was overexpressed in HCC cell lines with high metastatic potential and in metastatic HCCs. In vitro, circASAP1 promoted cell proliferation, colony formation, migration, and invasion, and in vivo, it enhanced tumor growth and pulmonary metastasis. Mechanism studies showed that circASAP1 acts as a competing endogenous RNA for microRNA 326 (miR‐326) and microRNA 532‐5p (miR‐532‐5p), both of which are tumor suppressors in HCC. We found that mitogen‐activated protein kinase (MAPK) 1 and colony stimulating factor (CSF)‐1 were direct common targets for microRNA 326 (miR‐326) and microRNA 532‐5p (miR‐532‐5p), which were regulated by circASAP1. CircASAP1 promotes HCC cell proliferation and invasion by regulating miR‐326/miR‐532‐5p‐MAPK1 signaling and, furthermore, mediates tumor‐associated macrophage infiltration by regulating the miR‐326/miR‐532‐5p‐CSF‐1 pathway. Clinical HCC samples exhibited a positive correlation between circASAP1 expression and levels of CSF‐1, MAPK1, and CD68+ tumor‐associated macrophages, all of which were predictive of patient outcomes.
Conclusion
We identified circASAP1 as a key regulator of HCC metastasis that acts on miR‐326/miR‐532‐5p‐MAPK1/CSF‐1 signaling and serves as a prognostic predictor in patients with HCC.
Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) utilizes iron‐initiated Fenton chemistry to destroy tumor cells by converting endogenous H2O2 into the highly toxic hydroxyl radical (.OH). There is a paucity of ...Fenton‐like metal‐based CDT agents. Intracellular glutathione (GSH) with .OH scavenging ability greatly reduces CDT efficacy. A self‐reinforcing CDT nanoagent based on MnO2 is reported that has both Fenton‐like Mn2+ delivery and GSH depletion properties. In the presence of HCO3−, which is abundant in the physiological medium, Mn2+ exerts Fenton‐like activity to generate .OH from H2O2. Upon uptake of MnO2‐coated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MS@MnO2 NPs) by cancer cells, the MnO2 shell undergoes a redox reaction with GSH to form glutathione disulfide and Mn2+, resulting in GSH depletion‐enhanced CDT. This, together with the GSH‐activated MRI contrast effect and dissociation of MnO2, allows MS@MnO2 NPs to achieve MRI‐monitored chemo–chemodynamic combination therapy.

Backscattering suppression in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) is one of the central issues to reduce energy loss and signal distortion, enabling for capability improvement of modern information processing ...systems. Valley physics provides an intriguing way for robust information transfer and unidirectional coupling in topological nanophotonics. Here we realize topological transport in a SOI valley photonic crystal slab. Localized Berry curvature near zone corners guarantees the existence of valley-dependent edge states below light cone, maintaining in-plane robustness and light confinement simultaneously. Topologically robust transport at telecommunication is observed along two sharp-bend interfaces in subwavelength scale, showing flat-top high transmission of ~10% bandwidth. Topological photonic routing is achieved in a bearded-stack interface, due to unidirectional excitation of valley-chirality-locked edge state from the phase vortex of a nanoscale microdisk. These findings show the prototype of robustly integrated devices, and open a new door towards the observation of non-trivial states even in non-Hermitian systems.
Whether nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is associated with an increased risk of mortality remains controversial. The present study aimed to clarify this issue. A systematic search of PubMed ...and Embase was conducted through October 2018. Studies providing risk estimates of NAFLD and mortality were included. A random-effects model was employed to calculate summary risk estimates. Subgroup analyses were performed to identify potential effect modifiers. Fourteen studies, involving 498501 subjects and 24234 deaths, were included. Patients with NAFLD were found to be at an elevated risk of all-cause mortality compared with those without hazard ratio (HR) = 1.34; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.17-1.54). The significantly positive association between NAFLD and all-cause mortality could not be modified by age, sex, follow-up duration, and adjustment for body mass index, diabetes, smoking or hypertension (all P
> 0.05), and remained in sensitivity analyses. No significant associations of NAFLD with CVD (HR = 1.13; 95% CI 0.92-1.38) and cancer (HR = 1.05; 95% CI 0.89-1.25) mortality were found. In conclusion, NAFLD is a predictor of increased all-cause mortality but not CVD and cancer mortality. These findings have important implications for decision making in public health and clinical practice, and highlight the urgency of developing effective treatments for NAFLD.
Forecasting accuracy is an important issue for successful intelligent traffic management, especially in the domain of traffic efficiency and congestion reduction. The dawning of the big data era ...brings opportunities to greatly improve prediction accuracy. In this paper, we propose a novel model, stacked autoencoder Levenberg-Marquardt model, which is a type of deep architecture of neural network approach aiming to improve forecasting accuracy. The proposed model is designed using the Taguchi method to develop an optimized structure and to learn traffic flow features through layer-by-layer feature granulation with a greedy layerwise unsupervised learning algorithm. It is applied to real-world data collected from the M6 freeway in the U.K. and is compared with three existing traffic predictors. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that an optimized structure of the traffic flow forecasting model with a deep learning approach is presented. The evaluation results demonstrate that the proposed model with an optimized structure has superior performance in traffic flow forecasting.
Tumor‐associated neutrophils (TANs) play a crucial role in tumor development and progression in the cancer microenvironment. Despite increased understanding of TAN contributions to hepatocellular ...carcinoma (HCC) progression and prognosis, the direct interaction between TANs and HCC cells is not fully understood. In this study, we tested the effect of TANs on HCC cells in vitro and in vivo and investigated the mechanism of interaction between them. Our results showed that TANs secreted bone morphogenetic protein 2 and transforming growth factor beta 2 and triggered microRNA 301b‐3p (miR‐301‐3p) expression in HCC cells, subsequently suppressed gene expression of limbic system–associated membrane protein (LSAMP) and CYLD lysine 63 deubiquitinase (CYLD), and increased stem cell characteristics in HCC cells. These TAN‐induced HCC stem‐like cells were hyperactive in nuclear factor kappa B signaling, secreted higher levels of chemokine (C‐X‐C motif) ligand 5 (CXCL5), and recruited more TAN infiltration, suggesting a positive feedback loop. In clinical HCC samples, increased TANs correlated with elevated miR‐301b‐3p, decreased LSAMP and CYLD expression, and increased nuclear p65 accumulation and CXCL5 expression, all of which predicted patient outcome. Conclusion: Our work identified a positive feedback loop governing cancer stem‐like cells and TANs in HCC that controls tumor progression and patient outcome.
