Bis-1,2-triethoxysilylpropyltetrasulfide silane films containing CeO2*ZrO2 nanoparticles were deposited by dip-coating on galvanised steel substrates. The morphological features of the coated ...substrates were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The anti-corrosion performance of the modified silane film applied on galvanised steel substrates was studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The ability of nanoparticles to mitigate localized corrosion activity at artificially induced defects was investigated via the scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) and by the scanning ion-selective electrode technique (SIET). The results showed that the addition of nanoparticles provides good corrosion protection of the galvanised steel substrates pre-treated with the modified silane solutions. The corrosion activity was reduced by more than one order of magnitude. Complementary d.c. experiments, using zinc electrodes exposed to NaCl solutions containing the nanoparticles were also performed in order to better understand the role of the nanoparticles. An ennoblement of the corrosion potential and polarisation of the anodic reactions could be detected.
The present work aims at evaluating the surface morphology and the corrosion resistance of galvanised steel substrates pre-treated with bis-triethoxysilylpropyl tetrasulfide silane (BTESPT) solutions ...doped with cerium nitrate or zirconium nitrate. The silane pre-treatment leads to the formation of a silane coating in the metallic surface. The surface morphology of this coating was studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
The corrosion behaviour of the pre-treated substrates during immersion in 0.05
M NaCl was assessed by the scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) and by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).
The results show that the presence of dopant improves the protective properties of the silane pre-treatment. Moreover, it was found that pre-treatments based on silanes doped with cerium nitrate are more resistant against corrosion development due to the corrosion inhibition properties of the cerium ions.
Kinetics of the oxidation of iron in fluxes of atomic and molecular oxygen have been studied over a wide temperature range from 573 to 1273 K. The influence of oxygen pre-dissociation on the ...oxidation rate was found negligible at 573-1073 K. At temperatures above 1073 K, when only FeO is formed, the rate of iron oxidation in atomic oxygen is substantially higher than that in molecular oxygen. Decarburization occurs during the first stage of oxidation of iron containing carbon. The rate of carbon elimination in atomic oxygen exceeds that in molecular oxygen due to the higher chemical potential of atomic gas.
Várias propriedades de superfície dos revestimentos orgânicos, como sejam a resistência ao risco e à abrasão, brilho, natureza superficial hidrofílica ou hidrófoba e facilidade de limpeza, entre ...outras, podem ser modificadas por deposição de filmes finos através da polimerização por plasma. Contudo, tais propriedades são conseguidas à custa da diminuição das propriedades de protecção do revestimento, pois este é degradado pelas condições de polimerização. Estudos anteriores demonstraram que a degradação ocorre essencialmente durante o passo de activação da polimerização por plasma. Como este passo é responsável pela limpeza da superfície e pela melhoria da aderência entre as camadas, um ponto de compromisso deve ser encontrado, de modo a minimizar a sua influência negativa nas propriedades de protecção por barreira do revestimento, sem comprometer a sua utilização. O presente trabalho procura clarificar o mecanismo de degradação ocorrido durante a etapa de activação. Assim, seguiu-se um procedimento onde vários reactores, gases de activação (árgon, ar e oxigénio) e duração da etapa, foram usados com o intuito de verificar a modificação da superfície de amostras de coil coating recorrendo para isso a testes de imersão, ensaios de impedância electroquímica e análise de superfície. Verificou-se uma dependência clara entre as propriedades de protecção por barreira da coil coating com o tipo de reactor, gás usado e tempo de activação. Um dos gases que maior influência tem, é o oxigénio. O efeito pode ser explicado pela formação de oxigénio atómico durante o processo, que conduz à formação de ligações carbonilo, sendo a degradação maior quando maior for o tempo de activação
