It is shown that it is possible to obtain nanostructured layers with an increased thickness (up to 2 mm), suitable for the repair of worn surfaces of component parts made of aluminum alloys during ...electrospark alloying of the surface of the aluminum alloy (D1) by the processing electrode of an Al–Sn alloy (20% Sn) with the use of the high current density and two-phase technology for producing a multilayer coating (applying–melting).
The data were obtained by a label-free quantification approach from a shotgun proteomics experiment, using STrap sample processing technique for protein digestion and high-performance liquid ...chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) for peptide analysis. MaxQuant data processing was used to obtain proteomics data. The dataset reflects changes in the liver protein profile of Japanese medaka exposed to 0, 5, 40 and 80 mg/L nominal concentrations of Sigma-Aldrich humic acid for 96 h. Actual concentrations of humic acid were measured using the potassium dichromate photometric method and reported in mg organic carbon/L. These proteomics data are relevant for further insights into fish stress responses to humic substances-related challenge.
Raw data were obtained from 250 specimens of roach Rutilus rutilus and 274 specimens of perch Perca fluviatilis at 15 sampling sites located from North to South Taiga. Fish sampling was performed ...using gill-nets with 22 and 28 mm mesh. Total and eviscerated weights, total and standard lengths, fish sex, gonad weight and maturity stage were recorded. Linear regression analysis of log-transformed total weight and total length values was performed. Regression slope and intercept were used to obtain length-weight relationships and mean condition factor values. Length-length relationships were calculated by the linear regression between the total and standard lengths. Gonadosomatic index was determined using the gonad weight and the total weight of fish. The data are useful for establishing biomass, fish growth patterns, relative condition of individuals within a sample or across populations.
The ALICE experiment will undergo extensive hardware and software upgrades for the LHC Run3. This translates in significant increase of the CPU and storage resources required for data processing, and ...at the same time the data access rates will grow linearly with the amount of resources. JAliEn (Java ALICE Environment) is the new Grid middleware designed to scale-out horizontally to fulfil the computing needs of the upgrade, and at the same time to modernize all parts of the distributed system software. This paper will present the architecture of the JAliEn framework, the technologies used and performance measurements. This work will also describe the next generation solution that will replace our main database backend, the AliEn File Catalogue. The catalogue is an integral part of the system, containing the metadata of all files written to the distributed Grid storage and also provides powerful search and data manipulation tools. As for JAliEn, the focus has been put onto horizontal scalability, with the aim to handle near exascale data volumes and order of magnitude more workload than the currently used Grid middleware. Lastly, this contribution will present how JAliEn manages the increased complexity of the tasks associated with the new ALICE data processing and analysis framework (ALFA) and multi-core environments.
We develop time-domain simulations of microwave and THz radiation sources built as arrays of active devices when the radiation wavelength is small as compared to spacing between electronic ...components. We pursue an approach when the system is represented by equations with time-delay feedback that could generate chaos and other forms of complicated dynamics. The approach simplifies simulations of ultra-wideband effects and exceeds capabilities of frequency-domain methods. As a model case, we simulated a microstrip circuit with Gunn diode and a remote resonator emitting the radiation towards infinity. We observed the emergence of either the continuous waves or the trains of high-frequency pulses depending on the bias conditions. We found bistability and hysteresis in the onset of different oscillation modes that depends on the way of driving the bias voltage into the domain of instability of the given system. The results would allow one to improve the design of THz radiation sources with time-delay coupling between components.

The aim of our work was to assess whether the cellular processes in the nephrocytes of the long-lived mussel Crenomytilus grayanus tend to acclimation or destruction under trace metal contamination. ...Mussels were collected from three sites in the north-western Pacific Ocean: reference site, upwelling site, and a site highly contaminated with trace metals. Concentration, subcellular distribution of trace metals (Cd, Cu, Zn, and Pb) in the mussel kidneys, and ultrastructural alterations of the nephrocytes were studied. To assess the total load of accumulated trace metals, the total concentration coefficient (∑СС) was determined.
In the kidneys of the reference C. grayanus, trace metals were eliminated from cell metabolism mainly by lysosomal granules or residue bodies. Under high levels of contamination, the defense mechanisms of C. grayanus are practically suppressed (no metallothionein-like protein peak, decreased content of granules) by the total effect of accumulated pollutants that leads to the destruction of cellular structures. Under natural conditions (upwelling site), increased accumulation of trace metals in the mussel kidneys did not lead to an increase in the number or size of lysosomal granules. However, abnormal high Cd accumulation in the kidneys caused the synthesis of high levels of metallothionein-like proteins that sequester most of the studied trace metals. To quickly lower the metal levels in nephrocytes under these conditions, a unique long-term acclimatory response — apocrine-like secretion in nephrocytes, which provides rapid elimination of me—MTLP complexes from the cell arose. Thus, our integrated study of the subcellular distribution of trace metals and ultrastructural alterations in nephrocytes allowed us to characterize the features of the structural and functional alterations in mussel cells under the field conditions tested.

The ultrastructure of the mesonephros of the natural population of Atlantic salmon smolts (
Salmo salar
L., 1758) and brown trout smolts (
Salmo trutta
L., 1758) inhabiting the Luga River in ...Leningrad oblast, Russia, was studied. The general plan of the mesonephric kidney structure is presented. Specific features of the structure of leukocytes and nephron of salmonids under smoltification are described. The size of leukocytes and the height of the epithelial cells of the proximal tubules of the kidneys of salmon smolts are greater in comparison with those kidney cells of freshwater teleost fishes. The number, size, and population density of mitochondria, as well as the development of a rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum in different types of cells of the mesonephros of salmon smolts, are higher than those in freshwater fish. A similar pattern is observed for the number of vesicles in the basal part of the distal tubule of the kidneys of the salmon smolt in comparison with freshwater fish. Cells with radially arranged vesicles (CRAVs) of different ultrastructures have been found for the first time in mesonephros of Atlantic salmon. All the described features of the ultrastructure of mesonephros cells are revealed for the smolts prior their migration into sea water.
The ultrastructure of oogenic cells and mature oocytes has been described in a deep-sea clam,
Calyptogena pacifica
, for the first time. Specimens were collected in June 2018 from the Piip volcano in ...the Bering Sea (55.3821° N, 167.2613° E). Female germ cells developed in the branched gonadal tubules. The pattern of oogenic development is similar to that in littoral species. Although somatic accessory cells do not form any follicles around developing oocytes, these cells have a well-developed endoplasmic reticulum, which could be a source of yolk precursors and be involved in vitellogenesis. Lipid droplets appear in early oocytes, but they disappear later, suggesting that developing oocytes use these lipid droplets. At the onset of vitellogenesis, developing oocytes accumulate lipids in the ooplasm facing the gonadal tubule wall. Yolk granules, in contrast, appear at later stages of oogenesis. Mature oocytes, which are 200 µm in diameter, are filled with a significant volume of lipid droplets (occupying 24% of ooplasm) and a smaller volume of yolk granules (~ 8%). The mature oocyte’s features, i.e., the large cell size (~ 200 µm in diameter) and the high abundance of ooplasmic inclusions, are typical of species with lecithotrophic development. The large volume of lipid droplets would enhance buoyancy of the oocytes and provide embryos and larvae with nutrients during dispersal. Symbiotic bacteria were found in accessory cells, in vitellogenic oocytes, and within remnants of degenerating oocytes.
