The research suggests a method to improve the present pulse coupled neural network (PCNN), which has a complex structure and unsatisfactory performance in image denoising and image segmentation. ...Then, a multi strategy collaborative improvement whale optimization algorithm (WOA) is proposed, and an improved whale optimization algorithm (IWOA) is constructed. IWOA is used to find the optimal parameter values of PCNN to optimize PCNN. By combining the aforementioned components, the IWOA-PCNN model had the best image denoising performance, and the produced images were crisper and preserve more information. IWOA-PCNN processed pictures have an average PSNR of 35.87 and an average MSE of 0.24. The average processing time for photos with noise is typically 24.80 s, which is 7.30 s and 7.76 s faster than the WTGAN and IGA-NLM models, respectively. Additionally, the average NU value measures 0.947, and the average D value exceeds 1000. The aforementioned findings demonstrate that the suggested method can successfully enhance the PCNN, improving its capability for image denoising and image segmentation. This can, in part, encourage the use and advancement of the PCNN.
Prostate cancer (PC) is the most common malignancy of the male genitourinary system. For patients with advanced progressive PC, the treatment strategies include second-line endocrine therapy, ...chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. Such therapeutic techniques are either too expensive or too toxic for some patients, and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has become an alternative for its low cost and low toxicity. The application of Shi-pi-san and Gui-zhi-Fu-ling-wan in PC has never been reported. We report their application on a 71-year-old male patient, who was diagnosed with PC and was undergoing endocrine therapy. He originally chose chemotherapy, and experienced acute renal failure, which required hemodialysis during hospitalization. He felt weak and opted for Chinese herbal medicine treatment. After treatment with Shi-pi-san and Gui-zhi-Fu-ling-wan, the patient’s tumor and other symptoms were significantly reduced, and he reported feeling “refreshed.” This case indicates that TCM treatment has unique advantages and is more tolerable than endocrine therapy and chemotherapy. Considering that the patient was undergoing hemodialysis treatment and using low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) to prevent blood coagulation while taking TCM, whether LMWH has a synergistic anticancer effect remains to be explored.
Decomposition-based evolutionary multi-objective algorithms (MOEAs) and many-objective algorithms (MaOEAs) divide a multi-objective problem (MOP) or a many-objective problem (MaOP) into several ...subproblems by using a set of predefined uniformly distributed reference vectors and can achieve good overall performance especially in maintaining population diversity. However, they encounter huge difficulties in addressing problems with irregular Pareto Fronts (PFs) since many reference vectors do not work during the searching process. To cope with this problem, this paper aims to improve an existing decomposition-based algorithm called reference vector guided evolutionary algorithm (RVEA) by designing an adaptive reference vectors adjustment strategy and strengthening the poor selection pressure. By adding the adaptive strategy, the predefined reference vectors will be dynamically adjusted according to the distribution of promising solutions with good overall performance and the subspaces where the PF lies may be further divided so as to contribute more to the searching process. Besides, the selection pressure with respect to convergence performance posed by RVEA is mainly from the length of normalized objective vectors and the metric is poor in evaluating the convergence performance of a solution with the increasing of objective size. Motivated by that, an improved angle-penalized distance (APD) method based on a newly proposed fractional dominance relation is developed to better distinguish solutions with sound convergence performance in each subspace. To investigate the performance of the proposed algorithm, extensive experiments are conducted to compare it with 5 state-of-the-art decomposition-based algorithms on 3-, 5-, 8-, 10- objective MaF1-MaF9. The results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm obtains the best overall performance.
Accumulating evidence suggests that the gut microbiota is an important factor in mediating the development of obesity-related metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes. Metformin and berberine, ...two clinically effective drugs for treating diabetes, have recently been shown to exert their actions through modulating the gut microbiota. In this study, we demonstrated that metformin and berberine similarly shifted the overall structure of the gut microbiota in rats. Both drugs showed reverting effects on the high-fat diet-induced structural changes of gut microbiota. The diversity of gut microbiota was significantly reduced by both berberine- and metformin-treatments. Nearest shrunken centroids analysis identified 134 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) responding to the treatments, which showed close associations with the changes of obese phenotypes. Sixty out of the 134 OTUs were decreased by both drugs, while those belonging to putative short-chain fatty acids (SCFA)-producing bacteria, including Allobaculum, Bacteriodes, Blautia, Butyricoccus, and Phascolarctobacterium, were markedly increased by both berberine and, to a lesser extent, metformin. Taken together, our findings suggest that berberine and metformin showed similarity in modulating the gut microbiota, including the enrichment of SCFA-producing bacteria and reduction of microbial diversity, which may contribute to their beneficial effects to the host.

Soil microbiomes are extremely complex, with dense networks of interconnected microbial species underpinning vital functions for the ecosystem. In advanced agricultural research, rhizosphere ...microbiome engineering is gaining much attention, as the microbial community has been acknowledged to be a crucial partner of associated plants for their health fitness and yield. However, single or combined effects of a wide range of soil biotic and abiotic factors impact the success of engineered microbiomes, as these microbial communities exhibit uneven structural and functional networks in diverse soil conditions. Therefore, once a deep understanding of major influential factors and corresponding microbial responses is developed, the microbiome can be more effectively manipulated and optimized for cropping benefits. In this mini-review, we propose the concept of
a microbiome-mediated smart agriculture system (MiMSAS).
We summarize some of the advanced strategies for engineering the rhizosphere microbiome to withstand the stresses imposed by dominant abiotic and biotic factors. This work will help the scientific community gain more clarity about engineered microbiome technologies for increasing crop productivity and environmental sustainability.

Magnetic chitosan nanocomposites have been synthesized on the basis of amine-functionalized magnetite nanoparticles. These nanocomposites can be removed conveniently from water with the help of an ...external magnet because of their exceptional properties. The nanocomposites were applied to remove heavy metal ions from water because chitosan that is inactive on the surface of the magnetic nanoparticles is coordinated with them. The interaction between chitosan and heavy metal ions is reversible, which means that those ions can be removed from chitosan in weak acidic deionized water with the assistance of ultrasound radiation. On the basis of the reasons referred to above, synthesized magnetic chitosan nanocomposites were used as a useful recyclable tool for heavy metal ion removal. This work provides a potential platform for developing a unique route for heavy metal ion removal from wastewater.
Crustacea, the subphylum of Arthropoda which dominates the aquatic environment, is of major importance in ecology and fisheries. Here we report the genome sequence of the Pacific white shrimp ...Litopenaeus vannamei, covering ~1.66 Gb (scaffold N50 605.56 Kb) with 25,596 protein-coding genes and a high proportion of simple sequence repeats (>23.93%). The expansion of genes related to vision and locomotion is probably central to its benthic adaptation. Frequent molting of the shrimp may be explained by an intensified ecdysone signal pathway through gene expansion and positive selection. As an important aquaculture organism, L. vannamei has been subjected to high selection pressure during the past 30 years of breeding, and this has had a considerable impact on its genome. Decoding the L. vannamei genome not only provides an insight into the genetic underpinnings of specific biological processes, but also provides valuable information for enhancing crustacean aquaculture.
Infected people are isolated to minimize the spread of pandemic diseases. Therefore, the factors related to self-isolation (SI) should not be neglected, and it is important to investigate the factors ...leading the infected (or possibly infected) people to choose to self-isolate. In this paper, we tried to show that the theory of planned behavior provides a useful conceptual framework for SI when facing a pandemic risk, and a regression method with Chinese provincial (Guangdong Province) data was applied to investigate how attitude (ATT), subjective norms (SN), and perceived behavioral control (PBC) influence SI when facing a pandemic emergency. The results and the robustness tests confirm that ATT, SN, and PBC have a significant positive influence on SI when facing a pandemic emergency. ATT plays the most important role, followed by SN and then PBC. Based on the factors of SI, we found, through theoretical and empirical analyses, at least three important aspects that local governments need to consider to encourage citizens to self-isolate when facing a pandemic.
Chinese lesbian and bisexual women (LBW) often face difficulties and challenges on campus due to their multiple, socially-oppressed identities. These students have to navigate through uncharted ...environments to make meaning of their identities. In this qualitative study, by considering four environmental systems of student life, including the student club (microsystem), the university (mesosystem), families (exosystem), and society (macrosystem), we aim to explore what identity negotiation Chinese LBW students have in them and what their meaning-making capacity influence that identity negotiation. We find students experience identity security in the microsystem, identity differentiation-inclusion or inclusion in the mesosystem, and identity unpredictability-predictability or predictability in the exosystem and macrosystem. Moreover, they employ foundational, transitional (formulaic to foundational or symphonic), or symphonic meaning-making capacity to influence their identity negotiation. Suggestions are made for the university to create an inclusive climate accommodating students with different identities.
