Objectives
Dabigatran is a direct thrombin inhibitor shown to be an effective alternative to warfarin in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF). We evaluated the use of dabigatran in ...patients with bioprosthetic mitral and/or aortic valve replacement and AF.
Methods
We selected 34 and randomized 27 patients in a 1:1 ratio to receive dabigatran or warfarin. The primary endpoint was the presence of a new intracardiac thrombus at 90 days, by transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE). Secondary endpoints included the development of dense spontaneous echo contrast (SEC) and incidence of stroke (ischemic or hemorrhagic), myocardium infarction, valve thrombosis and peripheral embolic events.
Results
The trial was terminated prematurely because of low enrollment. There were 27 patients in total: 15 patients placed in the dabigatran group and 12 in the warfarin group. After 90 days, one patient (8.3 %) in the warfarin group and none in the dabigatran group had developed a new intracardiac thrombus. In the dabigatran group, two patients (13.3 %) developed dense SEC versus one patient (8.3 %) in the warfarin group. In the warfarin group, one patient (8.3 %) presented ischemic stroke, and none did in the dabigatran group. We observed no cases of hemorrhagic stroke, valve thrombosis, embolic events or myocardial infarction in either group throughout the study. However, one patient (6.7 %) in the dabigatran group had a fully recovered transient ischemic attack and one patient in the warfarin group died of heart failure.
Conclusions
The use of dabigatran appears to be similar to warfarin in preventing the formation of intracardiac thrombus.

Abstract A 1903 strike of tobacco worker's was triggered by the layoff of the first four women who joined the labor movement in the city of Recife. To understand why these women workers organized politically, the article analyzes events related to the strike and social representations of female work in factories as morally reprehensible. The examination of the questions raised reveals that the tobacco workers appropriated the platforms for action provided by the labor movement to gain visibility in a process of establishing a work-related gender identity.
Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and powder activated carbon (PAC) were used as adsorbents for adsorption of Direct Blue 53 dye (DB-53) from aqueous solutions. The adsorbents were characterised ...using Raman spectroscopy, N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The effects of initial pH, contact time and temperature on adsorption capacity of the adsorbents were investigated. At pH 2.0, optimum adsorption of the dye was achieved by both adsorbents. Equilibrium contact times of 3 and 4 h were achieved by MWCNT and PAC adsorbents, respectively. The general order kinetic model provided the best fit of the experimental data compared to pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order kinetic adsorption models. For DB-53 dye, the equilibrium data (298–323 K) were best fitted to the Sips isotherm model. The maximum sorption capacity for adsorption of the dye occurred at 323 K, with the values of 409.4 and 135.2 mg g−1 for MWCNT and PAC, respectively. Studies of adsorption/desorption were conducted and the results showed that DB-53 loaded MWCNT could be regenerated (97.85%) using a mixture 50% acetone + 50% of 3 mol L−1 NaOH. Simulated dye house effluents were used to evaluate the application of the adsorbents for effluent treatment (removal of 99.87% and 97.00% for MWCNT and PAC, respectively, were recorded).
•Adsorption of DB-53 dye was studied using MWCNT and CAC as adsorbents.•MWCNT was characterised using Raman spectroscopy, SEM and TEM techniques.•Maximum adsorption capacities of MWCNT and CAC are 409.4 and 135.2 mg/g, respectively.•The adsorption processes are well described by general order kinetic model.•MWCNT and CAC have been proven effective for removal of DB-53 dye.
One of the biggest challenges involving low-cost inertial and magnetic sensors, especially the latter, is the inherent distortion/corruption of their measurements by systematic errors. Such errors ...can be so compromising that using the corrupted measurements for navigation purposes becomes an impossible task. In addition to sensor fusion, which aims at improving performance, calibration techniques can precisely estimate these errors, which, then, can be compensated for. This article revisits the problem of in-field magnetometer calibration, focusing on the traditional and well-established ellipsoid fitting-based extended two-step (ETS) method. Despite being largely employed, especially for initializing more sophisticated and iterative optimization-based calibration techniques, ETS implementation is not straightforward, as the mapping between its estimated intermediate parameters and the sensor error parameters of interest (biases, scale factors, and misalignments) has not been clearly provided in the literature yet. In this article, hence, we carefully derive the latter, aiming at facilitating ETS numerical implementation. Withal, and also figuring as main contribution of this article, we provide analytical closed-form solutions for ETS, which are especially suitable for low-cost, real-time embedded applications. In order to validate their accuracy, insensitivity to local-minima convergence issues, and computational efficiency, we present simulations—including a Monte Carlo analysis—and hardware implementation, alongside a comprehensive comparison with state-of-the-art magnetometer calibration techniques.

The condensation reactions were run under microwave irradiation and without the use of solvents. The compounds prepared in the condensation reactions were purified by recrystallization and obtained with satisfactory yields and short reaction times. The catalyst can be recycled in the condensation processes.
ABSTRACT Using terms like Huguenots, Englishmen, and pineapples, abolitionists have concealed the identity of enslaved people that they were in escape routes across the Pernambuco’s Zona da Mata region, Recife, and abolitionist quilombos in Ceará. This article examines the emergence of an interprovincial abolitionist networking in the early 1880s and the growing movement of escaped slaves between 1884 and 1888. It focuses on clandestine and radical actions performed by the Clube do Cupim. It also takes into consideration some aspects of Clube’s memory in the post-abolition. The Club stood out amongst abolitionist associations in terms of social diversity and the capacity to engage free, liberated and enslaved workers in operations that caused impacts over slavery in the region.

Mango seed, an abundant residue of the food industry, was used in its natural form (MS) and protonated form (AMS) as a biosorbent for the removal of Victazol Orange 3R (VO-3R) dye from its aqueous solutions. These biosorbents were characterized by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and by nitrogen adsorption/desorption curves. Optimization of the effects of the initial pH of the dye solution, biosorbent dosage and contact time between the dye and the biosorbents on the biosorption capacities of the biosorbents was studied. Based on an error function (Ferror), the general order kinetic model provided the best fit to the experimental data when compared to the pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order kinetic biosorption models. The equilibrium data were fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich and Liu isotherm models. For both biosorbents, the equilibrium data were best fitted to the Liu isotherm model. Finally, the mechanism of biosorption involving VO-3R and lignin–cellulose was evaluated using the hybrid quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) approach and molecular dynamic (MD) simulations. The results suggest that water molecules play a key role in the biosorption process.
