Context. The most highly accreting quasars are of special interest in studies of the physics of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and host galaxy evolution. Quasars accreting at high rates (L/LEdd ∼ 1) ...hold promise for use as “standard candles”: distance indicators detectable at very high redshift. However, their observational properties are still largely unknown. Aims. We seek to identify a significant number of extreme accretors. A large sample can clarify the main properties of quasars radiating near L/LEdd ∼ 1 (in this paper they are designated as extreme Population A quasars or simply as extreme accretors) in the Hβ spectral range for redshift ≲0.8. Methods. We use selection criteria derived from four-dimensional Eigenvector 1 (4DE1) studies to identify and analyze spectra for a sample of 334 candidate sources identified from the SDSS DR7 database. The source spectra were chosen to show a ratio RFeII between the FeII emission blend at λ4570 and Hβ, RFeII > 1. Composite spectra were analyzed for systematic trends as a function of Fe II strength, line width, and OIII strength. We introduced tighter constraints on the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) and RFeII values that allowed us to isolate sources most likely to be extreme accretors. Results. We provide a database of detailed measurements. Analysis of the data allows us to confirm that Hβ shows a Lorentzian function with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of Hβ ≤ 4000 km s−1. We find no evidence for a discontinuity at 2000 km s−1 in the 4DE1, which could mean that the sources below this FWHM value do not belong to a different AGN class. Systematic OIII blue shifts, as well as a blueshifted component in Hβ are revealed. We interpret the blueshifts as related to the signature of outflowing gas from the quasar central engine. The FWHM of Hβ is still affected by the blueshifted emission; however, the effect is non-negligible if the FWHM Hβ is used as a “virial broadening estimator” (VBE). We emphasize a strong effect of the viewing angle on Hβ broadening, deriving a correction for those sources that shows major disagreement between virial and concordance cosmology luminosity values. Conclusions. The relatively large scatter between concordance cosmology and virial luminosity estimates can be reduced (by an order of magnitude) if a correction for orientation effects is included in the FWHM Hβ value; outflow and sample definition yield relatively minor effects.
By combining an examination of stomach contents yielding a snapshot of the most recent trophic niche and the structure of parasite communities reflecting a long‐term feeding niche, this study aimed ...at gaining more comprehensive information on the role of the small‐sized deep‐water velvet belly lantern shark Etmopterus spinax in the local food webs of the Galicia Bank and the canyon and valley system of the Avilés Canyon, which have been both proposed for inclusion in the Natura 2000 network of protected areas. As far as is known, this study provides the first comparative parasite infracommunity data for a deep‐sea shark species. Component parasite communities in E. spinax were relatively rich, whereas the infracommunities were rather depauperate, with similar low diversity at both localities. The significant differences in the composition and structure of both parasite communities and prey assemblages indicate differential effects of the two deep‐sea ecosystems on both long‐term and most recent trophic niches of E. spinax. These results underline the importance of the use of multivariate analyses for the assessment of geographical variation in shark populations based on parasites and diet data.
More than 65 species of the genus Microcotyle Van Beneden & Hesse, 1863, have been described to date, most of them infecting Perciformes. Among the scorpaenoids (Perciformes, formerly ...Scorpaeniformes) the species of the genus Microcotyle parasitize sebastids and scorpaenids worldwide. In this study, we provide new morphological and molecular data for Microcotyle spp. in sebastids and scorpaenids from the Western Mediterranean and north-east Atlantic. Specimens of Helicolenus dactylopterus (Delaroche, 1809) (n = 107) and Scorpaena spp. (n = 107) were examined and their microcotylid specimens morphologically and molecularly characterized. Microcotyle merche n. sp. ex H. dactylopterus and specimens of Microcotyle algeriensis Ayadi, Gey, Justine & Tazerouti, 2016 from a new host and locality (Scorpaena scrofa from the north-east Atlantic) are herein described. Both species are phylogenetically close, but their morphology is markedly different mostly because the anterior lobe of the haptor present in other Microcotyle species is almost absent in M. algeriensis. Findings of M. merche n. sp. in the Mediterranean also excludes the presence of Microcotyle sebastis in this sea, encouraging the review of the exceptionally large host range and geographical distribution of this species.
To assess the contribution of hyperammonemia and inflammation to induction of mild cognitive impairment (or MHE). We analyzed the presence of mild cognitive impairment (CI) by using the PHES battery ...of psychometric tests and measured the levels of ammonia and of the inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and IL-18 in blood of patients with different types of liver or dermatological diseases resulting in different grades of hyperammonemia and/or inflammation. The study included patients with 1) liver cirrhosis, showing hyperammonemia and inflammation; 2) non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) showing inflammation but not hyperammonemia; 3) non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) showing inflammation and very mild hyperammonemia; 4) psoriasis, showing inflammation but not hyperammonemia; 5) keloids, showing both inflammation and hyperammonemia and 6) controls without inflammation or hyperammonemia. The data reported show that in patients with liver diseases, cognitive impairment may appear before progression to cirrhosis if hyperammonemia and inflammation are high enough. Five out of 11 patients with NASH, without liver cirrhosis, showed cognitive impairment associated with hyperammonemia and inflammation. Patients with keloids showed cognitive impairment associated with hyperammonemia and inflammation, in the absence of liver disease. Hyperammonemia or inflammation alone did not induce CI but the combination of certain levels of hyperammonemia and inflammation is enough to induce CI, even without liver disease.

•An efficient monitoring method for high-speed broaching is presented.•Time and Frequency domains signals are analyzed, taking into account the tooth passing frequency and ...harmonics.•Tool wear is estimated in real-time, by monitoring process vibrations recorded by accelerometers.•Experiments in nickel alloy type Inconel 718 (aged) pieces were carried out.
Real-time monitoring in CNC machine tools is focused on the early detection of tool wear, and in this way to assess part piece quality. The machining process known as broaching is critical for firtree slots (dovetails) production in turbomachinery components, such as turbine disks. Tight tolerances on one hand, even less than 5 µm in firtree-slots pressure faces, and high productivity on the other, are the two main requirements. Besides, broaching tools are very expensive and the cutting edges wear must be estimated during the process; in fact, tool wear in difficult-to-cut materials machining may cause a waste not only in terms of the tool but also of the very expensive workpieces. Broaching usually is one of the last operations in the process chain, so components start the operation with a very high-added value. Hence, only one bad slot implies an unrecoverable piece and therefore a huge waste of time and money.
In this paper, a monitoring method for efficient broaching is proposed by combining real-time monitoring and off-line tool wear inspection. Firstly, the cutting tool characteristics are defined, and those affected by tool degradation. Secondly, some broaching cycles were carried out while measuring a) process accelerations through two accelerometers, b) cutting force by load cells, and c) motor drive consumption. They were simultaneously recorded. Furthermore, the sensitivity between tool wear and broaching process natural frequencies is established.
Finally, a series of experimental tests were executed for verification, showing the useful approach for daily life production. The paper focuses on signals and their sensitivity to significant process variations.
We describe and discuss the selection procedure and statistical properties of the galaxy sample used by the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey, a public legacy survey of 600 ...galaxies using integral field spectroscopy. The CALIFA “mother sample” was selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR7 photometric catalogue to include all galaxies with an r-band isophotal major axis between 45′′ and 79.2′′ and with a redshift 0.005 < z < 0.03. The mother sample contains 939 objects, 600 of which will be observed in the course of the CALIFA survey. The selection of targets for observations is based solely on visibility and thus keeps the statistical properties of the mother sample. By comparison with a large set of SDSS galaxies, we find that the CALIFA sample is representative of galaxies over a luminosity range of −19 > Mr > −23.1 and over a stellar mass range between 109.7 and 1011.4 M⊙. In particular, within these ranges, the diameter selection does not lead to any significant bias against – or in favour of – intrinsically large or small galaxies. Only below luminosities of Mr = −19 (or stellar masses <109.7 M⊙) is there a prevalence of galaxies with larger isophotal sizes, especially of nearly edge-on late-type galaxies, but such galaxies form <10% of the full sample. We estimate volume-corrected distribution functions in luminosities and sizes and show that these are statistically fully compatible with estimates from the full SDSS when accounting for large-scale structure. For full characterization of the sample, we also present a number of value-added quantities determined for the galaxies in the CALIFA sample. These include consistent multi-band photometry based on growth curve analyses; stellar masses; distances and quantities derived from these; morphological classifications; and an overview of available multi-wavelength photometric measurements. We also explore different ways of characterizing the environments of CALIFA galaxies, finding that the sample covers environmental conditions from the field to genuine clusters. We finally consider the expected incidence of active galactic nuclei among CALIFA galaxies given the existing pre-CALIFA data, finding that the final observed CALIFA sample will contain approximately 30 Sey2 galaxies.
Context. We have studied a sample of 89 very isolated, elliptical galaxies at z < 0.08 and compared their properties with elliptical galaxies located in a high-density environment such as the Coma ...supercluster. Aims. Our aim is to probe the role of environment on the morphological transformation and quenching of elliptical galaxies as a function of mass. In addition, we elucidate the nature of a particular set of blue and star-forming isolated ellipticals identified here. Methods. We studied physical properties of ellipticals, such as color, specific star formation rate, galaxy size, and stellar age, as a function of stellar mass and environment based on SDSS data. We analyzed the blue and star-forming isolated ellipticals in more detail, through photometric characterization using GALFIT, and infer their star formation history using STARLIGHT. Results. Among the isolated ellipticals ≈20% are blue, ≲8% are star forming, and ≈10% are recently quenched, while among the Coma ellipticals ≈8% are blue and just ≲1% are star forming or recently quenched. There are four isolated galaxies (≈4.5%) that are blue and star forming at the same time. These galaxies, with masses between 7 × 109 and 2 × 1010 h-2 M⊙, are also the youngest galaxies with light-weighted stellar ages ≲1 Gyr and exhibit bluer colors toward the galaxy center. Around 30–60% of their present-day luminosity, but only <5% of their present-day mass, is due to star formation in the last 1 Gyr. Conclusions. The processes of morphological transformation and quenching seem to be in general independent of environment since most of elliptical galaxies are “red and dead”, although the transition to the red sequence should be faster for isolated ellipticals. In some cases, the isolated environment seems to propitiate the rejuvenation of ellipticals by recent (<1 Gyr) cold gas accretion.
