Purpose
The article examines existing regulations governing the production and importation of organic cocoa.
Methods and approach
Multilevel governance is used as a theoretical and methodological tool to examine the discursive and material struggles which challenge the promotion of organic cocoa, using a content analysis of European Union (EU) regulations governing the production and importation of organic agricultural produce, including cocoa.
Findings
The article finds that the EU regulations on the production and importation of organic cocoa take a vertical approach to multilevel governance. Organic cocoa farmers, who come lower down in the governance hierarchy, have no role in policy‐making and have simply to follow these regulations.
Policy implications
The regulations seem to ignore the inputs of actors at the lower level in the hierarchy. The absence of organic producers' (farmers) participation in the governance architecture may inhibit conventional farmers from venturing into organic cocoa production.
Experts examine the ways transnational corporations exercise power over governance of the global food system and the implications this has for sustainability
In today's globally integrated food ...system, events in one part of the world can have multiple and wide-ranging effects, as has been shown by the recent and rapid global rise in food prices. Transnational corporations (TNCs) have been central to the development of this global food system, dominating production, international trade, processing, distribution, and retail sectors. Moreover, these global corporations play a key role in the establishment of rules and regulations by which they themselves are governed. This book examines how TNCs exercise power over global food and agriculture governance and what the consequences are for the sustainability of the global food system. The book defines three aspects of this corporate power: instrumental power, or direct influence; structural power, or the broader influence corporations have over setting agendas and rules; and discursive, or communicative and persuasive, power. The book begins by examining the nature of corporate power in cases ranging from “green” food certification in Southeast Asia and corporate influence on U.S. food aid policy to governance in the seed industry and international food safety standards. Chapters examine such issues as promotion of corporate-defined “environmental sustainability” and “food security,” biotechnology firms and intellectual property rights, and consumer resistance to GMOs and other cases of contestation in agrobiology. In a final chapter, the editors raise the crucial question of how to achieve participation, transparency, and accountability in food governance.

Consumers are willing to pay a higher price for products certified as sustainable. By implication, such certification is in the interest of producers, too. A general claim that sustainability ...characteristics automatically imply a price margin may not, however, be justified. Rather, several price premia might be necessary. This analysis based on 882 product prices of the German online retail, is concerned with the price premia attached to various labels and products. It estimates individual price premia for products, like coffee, tea, sweets, spices, etc., showing that sustainable food labeling is not always an indicator for a price markup. In fact, for some products (e.g. spices, chocolate) and labels (e.g. UTZ) a negative price effect is even estimated. Such markdowns may be due to a differing emphasis on sustainability issues along the supply chain for some products or the label's certification policies.
La transition écologique, énoncée au Sommet de Rio+20, inscrit au cœur des agendas des États et des collectivités la volonté de mise en œuvre simultanée de plusieurs objectifs – réduction des ...émissions de gaz à effet de serre, promotion des énergies renouvelables – tout en interrogeant nos besoins. En France, cette question s'est focalisée sur la problématique de la transition énergétique. Loin de faire consensus, cette notion donne néanmoins naissance à une recrudescence de solutions techniques de verdissement (rénovation des bâtiments, éco-conception des produits, revalorisation des déchets…) dont l’apogée se retrouve dans la promotion des démarches « intelligentes » – smart – à l’échelle des réseaux et des villes. Or, d’autres modèles d’efficacité ou de sobriété énergétique ne pourraient-ils pas cohabiter ? Ne conviendrait-il pas d’interroger l’échelle intermédiaire de l’aménagement du territoire et de la planification afin de mesurer les potentialités de transition énergétique urbaine ou rurale ? L’action sur les systèmes techniques ne passerait-elle pas aussi par une revalorisation efficace des connaissances et savoir-faire locaux ? Ne peut-on pas croire que l’insignifiance de l’échelle individuelle ait un impact significatif à l’échelle collective ? Si toute activité humaine entraîne une consommation d’énergie, la façon dont les hommes maîtrisent celle-ci est au fondement de nos modes de vie et de l’organisation de nos sociétés. L’ouvrage se compose de trois parties mettant en évidence la diversité géographique et thématique des leviers possibles du changement autour d’une question centrale : comment réussir la transition énergétique ? La première partie permet d’interroger la mise en œuvre opérationnelle locale de la transition énergétique et ses limites dans la réponse qu’elle apporte à la crise environnementale globale. La seconde propose une vision prospective de ce que devrait être la transition énergétique en développant des pistes prenant en compte l’individu, la technologie et l’épaisseur du territoire. Sont exposés, dans la dernière partie de l’ouvrage, des scénarios régionaux de sobriété énergétique et de transformations sociétales axés sur les modes de vie et de société afin de réduire notre dépendance à l’énergie.
