Some sixty years ago, Frances Lichten, an artist and one of the leading authorities on the material culture of Pennsylvania Germans, wrote what appears to be the fi rst article on the phenomenon, "'Tramp Work': Penknife Plus Cigar Boxes," in Pennsylvania Folklife (1959). Fendelman not only organized the fi rst major exhibition on the phenomenon for the Museum of American Folk Art in New York (1975), but also wrote Tramp Art: An Itinerant's Folk Art (1975).
