Until the 1990s, the myth that Austria had been a victim of National Socialism reigned. Recent historiography has turned this discourse diametrically around, highlighting, among other things, the ...limited willingness of large segments of Austrian society after 1945 to address their guilt and responsibility for Nazi crimes. However, these issues have seldom been explored in depth. The exhibitions of the early postwar era shine light on precisely these tentative attempts. Those initiated by the Allies, aimed to confront the locals with Nazi crimes, were followed by local exhibitions, which were nevertheless unable to find a means of expression transcending a mere documentation of the horrors that had occurred. The Viennese exhibition Niemals vergessen! - a spectacular show from a curatorial perspective - already moved in a twilight zone between serious engagement with the subject and projecting guilt onto Germany. Yet the show's motto − 'We are all guilty!' − demonstrates that such statements were possible in 1946 that would later become suppressed. This phase of direct confrontation with National Socialism ended with a watered-down attempt to stage an anti-racist exhibition at the Natural History Museum in 1949, although further exhibitions were mounted by resistance groups, albeit with different aims in mind. One reason for the failure of these early initiatives may have been the absence of an appropriate language with which to discuss the Holocaust, a form of 'speechlessness' in light of the dimensions of this crime. Not until 1965 would the Holocaust be exhibited to the Viennese public, in a traveling exhibition at the Chamber of Labor. The great silence that is presumed to have dominated in the early postwar period turns out to be no less of a myth: Whoever listened closely would at least have heard a whisper.

For a period of some twenty-five years, ...encompassing the end of the reign of Emperor Leopold I and that of his elder son, Joseph I, the court's emphasis on piety and music meshed perfectly with the musical practices of Viennese convents. This mutually beneficial association disintegrated during the eighteenth century, and the changing relationship of court and convents reveals something of the complex connections among the Habsburg court, the Roman Catholic Church, and Viennese society. Identifying and discussing many musical works performed in convents, including oratorios, plays with music, feste teatrali, sepolcri, and other church music, Page reveals a golden age of convent music in Vienna and sheds light on the convents' surprising engagement with contemporary politics.

With a focus on the Habsburg Empire, this innovative work presents
an integrated and creative study of spatial mobilities: from short
to long ...term, and intranational and inter-European to
transatlantic. Migration was not just relegated to city folk, but
likewise was the reality for rural dwellers, and we gain a better
understanding of how sending and receiving states and shipping
companies worked together to regulate migration and shape
populations.
Bringing historical census data, governmental statistics, and
ship manifests into conversation with centuries-old migration
patterns of servants, agricultural workers, seasonal laborers,
peddlers, and artisans-both male and female-this research argues
that Central Europeans have long been mobile, that this mobility
has been driven by diverse motivations, and that post-1850
transatlantic migration was an obvious extension of earlier spatial
mobility patterns. Demonstrating the complexity of human mobility
via an exploration of the links between overseas, continental, and
internal migrations, On Many Routes shows that migrations
to the United States, to the nearest coalfield, and to the urban
capitals are embedded within complicated patterns of movement.
There is no good reason to study internal apart from transnational
moves, and combining these fields brings ample possibility to make
migration research more relevant for the much broader field of
social and economic history. This work poses an invaluable resource
to the understudied area of Habsburg Empire migration studies,
which it relocates within its wider European context and provides a
major methodological contribution to the history of human migration
more broadly. The ubiquity and functionality of human movement
sheds light on the relationship between human nature and society,
and challenges simplistic notions of human mobility then and
now.

Embroiled in the political events surrounding World War I and the failed Hungarian revolutions of 1918-19, a number of intellectuals fled Hungary for Germany and Austria, where they essentially ...created Weimar culture. Among them were Georg Lukács, whose History and Class Consciousness recast Marxism and challenged even those who repudiated its politics; Bela Balázs, who pioneered film theory and collaborated with film-makers G. W. Pabst, Leni Riefenstahl, and Alexander Korda; László Moholy-Nagy, who codirected the Bauhaus during its heyday in the mid-1920s; and Karl Mannheim, whose Ideology and Utopia was the most widely discussed work of noncommunist social theory during the Weimar years. In this collective portrait combining intellectual history with biographical detail, Lee Congdon describes how Hungarian thinkers, each in a different way, passionately advocated the need for community in a Europe torn by war and revolution. Whether communist, avant-gardist, or Catholic convert, each thinker is examined within the vast tapestry of his works, his cultural and intellectual milieu, and his experience as an exile.
