Abstract
In this article, I draw on historical and conceptual arguments to show, first, that disenchantment and the influential view of the relationship between science and religion to which ...disenchantment gives rise are rooted in the metaphysics of theism. I then introduce the alternative metaphysical position of panentheism and identify Jungian psychology as an important, if implicit, mid‐twentieth‐century instance of panentheistic thought. Using the example of Jungian psychology, I demonstrate how the viewpoint of panentheism undoes the implications of disenchantment for the relationship between science and religion, promoting greater opportunities for dialogue and reconciliation between science and religion. I note, however, that these closer relations may depend on understanding science and religion differently from how they are understood under disenchantment. While the original tension between science and religion is eased, another tension—between panentheistic and disenchanted understandings of science and religion—is exposed. I conclude by reflecting on some implications of this discussion for sociology.
Quest'articolo, partendo da una annotazione di Benedetto Croce che scorge nella Scienza nuova di Giambattista Vico una certa 'oscurità' di pensiero, rintraccia nella cultura italiana degli anni ...Trenta una precisa costellazione culturale, in cui si coniugano spunti psicoanalitici ed elementi antropologici in congiunzione alla filosofia vichiana. L'autore analizza, in particolare, le opere teoriche dei torinesi Carlo Levi e Cesare Pavese, concentrandosi sul problema del concetto di 'origine' e di costruzione del Sé; e dimostra come Vico sia da loro utilizzato in chiave oppositiva al mondo nazifascista, come colui che è stato in grado di ripercorrere a ritroso i gradini dell'evoluzione umana e di giungere a immaginare il momento di presa di coscienza dei bestioni primordiali.
Religious fundamentalism has become ever more popular in recent years. Most notably through Islamic, Judaic and Christian Fundamentalism. In this article the author attempts through the application ...of analytical psychological theory, specifically the theory of Carl Gustav Jung and those of post-Jungians, to construct a psychological understanding of religious fundamentalists, and how their psychological tendencies influence those who align with their fundamentalist notions. Through an analytical psychological explanation, the author explains that individuals who are influenced by religious fundamentalists do not possess the necessary self-knowledge one should have and are thus easily influenced. The reason why others are easily influenced by religious fundamentalists is because of the negative impact of the trickster/shadow archetype that influences their rational thinking.
Bird-men, compelled fatefully to soar sun-ward, haunt Daphne Du Maurier’s novels and short stories. Her incessant re-working of the myth of Icarus finds its climax in her later novel, The Flight of ...the Falcon (1965), in which Aldo Donati dons Daedalus-like wings, then, “like Icarus, … flies too near the sun” before plummeting to his death. Furthermore, the presentation of the novel’s Donati brothers reflects, with uncanny accuracy, components of Jungian symbology as well as the “Icarus complex”, first identified by psychologist, Henry A. Murray. This article examines the relatively critically neglected novel, The Flight of the Falcon, as a narrative transformation of the classical myth of Icarus and the psychoanalytic theories that it inspired. In doing so, the article seeks to dispel du Maurier’s own anxiety that the “deep unconscious motives” underlying the macabre actions of her beguiling, bird-imitating protagonist, Aldo Donati, and his brother, Armino, would remain overlooked.

The psychological phenomenon of a suddenly appearing, extremely enigmatic, and at the same time fascinating state in which one feels influenced by higher powers was described as a “numinous ...experience” by R. Otto and C. G. Jung. This condition is one of those subjectively non-rational experiences that have so far received little attention in cultural clinical psychology and yet have great potency to explain psychopathological phenomena. In the first section of this paper, we work towards a contemporary psychological definition both by focusing on the roles of paradoxical cognitions and dissociation and by presenting various differentiations and possible explanatory mechanisms. In the second part of this paper, we describe the numinous state as it occurs in selected clinical phenomena such as the subjective experience of potentially traumatic events including near-death experiences, sexual abuse of children, post-traumatic stress disorder, severe states of mourning (diagnosed today as prolonged grief disorder), and sleep paralysis. This paper is intended as a theoretical proposal aimed at better understanding subjectively non-rational states in patients.
O artigo, após apresentar brevemente o campo da Estética da Recepção, destaca os escritos de Jung que se referem aos espectadores de arte, para, então, estabelecer bases para um diálogo entre tais ...textos e essa disciplina que ainda permanece pouco conhecida. O artigo discorre sobre as particularidades dos fenômenos envolvidos na apreensão de obras de arte, considerando, entre outras, as noções junguianas de símbolo, de arte como compensação e da dinâmica entre a consciência e o inconsciente. Para fundamentar os dados teóricos, o artigo também introduz algumas passagens que revelam Jung em sua faceta de espectador de obras de arte. Por fim, opõe-se aos recentes atos de censura a obras de arte contemporâneas.
Resumo A partir de um poema de Dora Ferreira da Silva que trata de seu desinteresse pelo romance Ulisses, de James Joyce, este artigo desenvolve uma reflexão sobre o sentido humanizador da arte para ...a poeta paulista. Além de incursionar por poemas que trazem os mitos de Orfeu e Cassandra como representativos do poder organizador, fundante e humanizador da palavra poética, recobra-se um surpreendente texto de Carl Gustav Jung sobre a referida obra joyceana. Pelos vieses crítico-teóricos, objetiva-se investigar a arte como um construto de vivências ficcionais que refletem o homem em sua temporalidade.
Resumen A partir de un poema de Dora Ferreira da Silva que trata de su desinterés por la novela Ulises, de James Joyce, este artículo desarrolla una reflexión sobre el sentido humanizador del arte para la poeta paulista. Además de incursionar por poemas que tratan los mitos de Orfeo y Cassandra como representativos del poder organizador, fundador y humanizador de la palabra poética, se recobra un sorprendente texto de Carl Gustav Jung sobre la referida obra joyceana. Por los sesgos crítico-teóricos, se pretende investigar el arte como un constructo de vivencias ficcionales que reflejan al hombre en su temporalidad.
Abstract This article reflects on the humanizing sense of art in the work of poet Dora Ferreira da Silva, based on her poem that deals with her disinterest in James Joyce’s Ulysses. Beyond exploration of her works that adopt the myths of Orpheu and Cassandra as the organizing and humanizing principal of her poetry, we recover a surprising text of Carl Gustav Jung on Joyce’s work. Through a critical-theoretical approach, this article investigates art as a construct of fictional experiences that reflect man in his temporality.
