This article analyzes the biographical and contextual elements which enabled Fitzgerald to incorporate the psychiatry of the time into Tender Is the Night (1934). The content of the novel is linked ...to Zelda Fitzgerald’s mental illness and her admission to a Swiss psychiatric clinic in 1930. It also identifies the parallels between the doctors who treated the couple and those that appear in the novel, examining the elements used to construct fictional characters inspired by major figures in psychiatry during this period, including Oscar Forel, Eugen Bleuler and Carl Gustav Jung. Lastly, it evaluates the weight and significance of the discourse and the psychiatric and psychoanalytic concepts utilized by Fitzgerald in the novel.
This article briefly presents the field of Aesthetics of Reception and highlights the Jung’s writings related to art spectators, in order to establish bases for a dialogue between those texts and ...that still little-known discipline. The article brings up the particularities of the phenomena involved in the apprehension of works of art, considering, among others, Jungian notions of symbols, art as a compensation and the dynamic between consciousness and the unconscious. To ground the theoretical data, the study also introduces some passages that reveal Jung as a spectator of works of art. Finally, it takes a stand against the recent acts of censorship of contemporary works of art.
Archetypes, which are included in the psychology studies that Carl Gustav Jung called “Analytical Psychology”, are behavioral patterns that have been transferred from past to present. The archetypes, ...which are accepted as “primary pattern/ model”, and which exist outside of humans’ mutual/collective unconscious, are the codes that connect the individual to the universal. One of these codes, the mother archetype, has a trait in human life. Didem Madak, a poet whose “mother archetype” could be traced, lost her mother at a young age and left her three-year-old daughter behind in her forties. Thus, Didem Madak has reflected pain of being motherless to her works. The three works that collect Didem Madak’s poems are titled as Grapon Kâğıtları (2000), Ah’lar Ağacı (2002) and Pulbiber Mahallesi (2007). The poet dedicated her poems to different people just as she did in her books. There are eighteen poems in Grapon Kâğıtları, nine in Ah’lar Ağacı, and fifteen in the Pulbiber Mahallesi. At the end of the Pulbiber Mahallesi; there are four poems which were not included in the books of the poet, but published in journals under the title “Ardından”, the text of her last days from the pen of her close friend Müjde Bilir, and the last poem she wrote, and her last poem named “128 Dikişli Şiir”. In this study, all the poems in the three books were examined based on the archetypal criticism method which was framed by Carl Gustav Jung and the findings obtained by taking the mother archetype in the center were evaluated.
Just over one hundred years ago, Jung coined the term, “Analytical Psychology” to differentiate his theories about the nature and dynamics of the human psyche from the “psychoanalytic” theories of ...his compatriot, Sigmund Freud. Whilst Jung and his compatriots in related schools of “depth psychology” spoke of “the unconscious” as the driving instinctual force of the mind, scientists today refer principally to the “brain” and its neurological functions and processes. Despite this change in focus, Analytical Psychology, as a recognized corpus of thought and therapeutic practice in its own right, continues to incite dialogue and debate with many other academic traditions, praxes, and fields of study, far beyond its own psychological and psychiatric disciplinary origins. Ideas of analytical psychology can be found in disciplines as wide ranging as business studies, social theory, education, neuroscience, political thought, linguistics, literature, history and historiography, religious studies, quantum physics, environmental studies, fine art and art history, media, and film. Similarly, analytical psychology as a therapeutic practice, is very much in demand within an eclectic range of fields of human care, including those that are relatively new, such as, terminal health care, HIV counselling, political consultation, reconciliation of interfaith groups, relief work to victims of natural disaster, consultation on matters of ecological sustainability, and so on. Analytical psychology’s widespread appeal demonstrates its usefulness in establishing connections between otherwise disparate disciplines so as to make better sense of our human behaviors, motivations, and values. ...
In Jung's encounter with India, projection and self-reflection play a major role on various levels. In this essay, I explore these levels from different angles. I argue that this specific ...constellation of topics, which includes Jung's critical assessment of yoga and meditation, strikes at the very heart of Jung's therapeutic approach. My analysis will highlight the different directions of Analytical Psychology and traditional spiritual-therapeutic techniques from India as perceived by Jung and his contemporaries in early twentieth century Europe. In order to understand the Jungian approach properly, I argue that it is necessary to take into account indigenous European spiritual traditions, e.g. the Protestant spiritual diary and related forms of self-inquiry, including ancient practices such as divination and shamanic soul-journeys, which might have survived in medieval visionary literature, making a re-appearance in Jung's spiritual diary-illuminated manuscript, the Red Book. The paper might serve as a reminder of the fact that it is important to understand the implications and the specific cultural contexts of therapeutic techniques before we export or import them to or from other parts of the world.
Art of the 20th century is characterized by the rise of the mythical thought and transformation of the myth into an artistic creativity. In music we can encounter manifestations of conscious and ...unconscious neo-mythologism in various forms. The methodological foundations of our text are concepts by Claude Lévi-Strauss, Carl Gustav Jung, Gilles Deleuze or Victoria Adamenko. The text focuses on the basic identification of the repetition as a mythological sign and its manifestation in the music of the 20th century (Arnold Schoenberg, George Crumb, minimal music etc.). Constitutive principle of repetition in music is connected with categories such as musical space and time, contrast, difference, musical thought.
En este artículo reflexionamos sobre dos obras pertenecientes al mundo moderno y contemporáneo en las que el manuscrito iluminado es utilizado como soporte de registro de la experiencia visionaria: ...los Libros Proféticos Iluminados de William Blake (1757-1827) y el Libro Rojo de Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961). Estos autores consideraron el manuscrito iluminado como un formato más auténtico para la transmisión de sus visiones, ya que permitía superar la dimensión puramente estética del arte y convocar una síntesis entre la materia y el espíritu propio del pensamiento simbólico del neoplatonismo del siglo xii europeo. Desde esta perspectiva, indagamos en el carácter altamente espiritual que Blake y Jung confirieron a la creación artística y a la materialidad del libro como soporte de escritura y de lectura, estableciendo algunas correspondencias con las nuevas concepciones sobre el arte elaboradas en el contexto de las vanguardias europeas del siglo xx.
Up to the present day, Sabina Spielrein has been seen as a means to deeper understanding of Freud and Jung and, in particular, the relationship between these two “great men”. This is also the reason ...why her scholarly achievements after her 1912 essay "Destruction as the Cause of Coming Into Being” are hardly taken into account. This study shows that Spielrein's main research work was in the areas of child analysis and developmental psychology—that is, beyond the work and the persons of Freud and Jung—and that she made numerous significant contributions to the field, so many of them ahead of her time.
