The nature of epiphreatic flow remains an important research challenge in karst hydrology. This study focuses on the flood propagation along the epiphreatic system of Reka-Timavo system (Kras/Carso Plateau, Slovenia/Italy). It is based on long-term monitoring of basic physical parameters (pressure/level, temperature, specific electric conductivity) of ground water in six active caves belonging to the flow system. The system vigorously responds to flood events, with stage rising >100 m in some of the caves. Besides presenting the response of the system to flood events of different scales, the work focuses on the interpretation of recorded hydrographs in view of the known distribution and size of conduits and basic hydraulic relations. Furthermore, the hydrographs were used to infer the unknown geometry between the observation points. This way, the main flow restrictors, overflow passages and large epiphreatic storages were identified. The assumptions were tested with a hydraulic model, where the inversion procedure was used for an additional parameter optimisation. Time series of temperature and specific electric conductivity were used to assess the apparent velocities of flow between consecutive points.
The paper aims to present the geology of the western part of the Classical Karst (NW Dinarides), located at the border between Slovenia and Italy. The work is based on archive, published and new data ...collected by Slovenian and Italian researchers within several scientific national and Cross Border Cooperation projects. The map, produced at a scale of 1:50,000, summarizes the lithological and structural setting and is supplemented by three geological cross-sections of the study area.
This paper focuses on the Kras/Carso Food Tour to present the challenges of developing a luxury tourism product. The tour's design followed the current strategy of the Slovenian Tourist Board, which ...defines specific criteria for a luxury experience. Contextualized by the experiential trends in tourism, the paper juxtaposes the bottom-up and top-down perspectives on luxury experiences. The authors argue that mediation by experts familiar with academic discourses and local culture is beneficial for the development of a successful tourism product. The study contributes to the debates on luxury tourism, which have neglected bottom-up perceptions in tourist discourse and overlooked the dilemmas people face when "luxurifying" their traditions and heritage practices.
Caverna degli Orsi is located near S. Dorligo della Valle – Dolina in the Trieste Karst (NE Italy), at 360 m a.s.l. on the western slope of Monte Carso in Rosandra valley. The cave is tunnel-shaped, ...and the original access is at present completely buried by a debrisfall deposit that covers a wide area of the mountain side. Since the cave entrance closed, sedimentation rate and weathering processes have been very low inside the cave. Therefore, a paleosurface has been preserved with minor changes. Typical traces of the presence of Ursus spelaeus are evident on the floor surface and on the walls. Two excavation sondages were carried out by the Department of Archaeological Sciences of Pisa University between 1992 and 2006. Sondage A is the inner one, while sondage B is situated in the outer part of the cave, where the tunnel entrance is obstructed by a debrisfall coming from the slope.
The results of the faunal analysis, related to the possible connections with the faunal assemblages of Eastern Europe, are presented. Both stratigraphic sequences start from a flowstone, not dated but reputedly assigned to Eemian (MIS 5e). In the lowest layers of sondage B there are large mammals with warm indicators such as cf. Stephanorhinus kirchbergensis and Dama sp., in an association dominated by U. spelaeus. Among small mammals, common vole (Microtus arvalis) is dominant in both sequences. The presence of Dama sp. in the lowest levels, together with the assemblage of small mammals and stratigraphic considerations, allow a calibration of the two sequences from MIS 5 to MIS 2 (Late Pleistocene).
In both sondages 26 taxa of small mammals and 24 ones of large mammals have been found. The high biodiversity in the small mammal assemblage and the occurrence of Dinaromys bogdanovi, Balkan snow vole, together with Chionomys nivalis and northern and eastern European species, such as Microtus oeconomus, Sicista betulina, Cricetulus migratorius and Mesocricetus cf. newtoni mixed together with western ones confirms the presence in this geographical area of an ecotone, with Balkan and Western Mediterranean Europe biocoenoses in the Late Pleistocene.
In his 1912 work, Il mio Carso, Scipio Slataper grants a structuring role to the limestone plateau of the Karst. The resulting centrality of mountains and of stone underpins three more or less ...sequential temporal configurations within the work as the protagonist grows from a childhood immersed in a natural idyll, through an adolescence defined by a growing historical awareness, and, finally, arrives at an adulthood in which a sense of geological time has imbued his maturity with a new humility. In this final temporal regime, the protagonist, to borrow Leopold's phrasing, "thinks like a mountain," a form of wisdom that, grounded in the ostensible infinity of stone, consists in objectively grasping the mutual entanglement of all beings. This same stony wisdom resonates with Slataper's vision of cultural irredentism, as Trieste and its inhabitants meld with the Karst limestone, already itself a primordial blend of organic and inorganic materials, to become hybrids in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural space of border crossings.
