Holiness in the early modern period was a complex system of beliefs and practices that responded to varied, and often conflicting, social, cultural, and spiritual needs. Like other expressions of ...piety, the early modern cult of saints was profoundly reshaped by the post-Tridentine Church’s attempts to impose uniformity and the concomitant expansion of Catholicism to overseas territories. Because of this creative tension, curial bodies in Rome often found themselves mediating between increasingly strict definitions of sanctity and local societies’ desire for official recognition of regional cults.

Admisión y primeros años en el Opus Dei (1944-1950). Contamos con cartas redactadas antes de pertenecer al Opus Dei. Guadalupe escribía no sólo al fundador del Opus Dei cartas ya parcialmente ...publicadas anteriormente sino a muchas de las personas -pertenecientes a la Obra o no- que conoció a lo largo de su vida. Se trata de un material de una riqueza enorme, con datos sustanciales sobre su vida en el Opus Dei desde los primeros momentos, desde su paso por México, por Roma, por el Madrid de los años 60 y 70... hasta llegar a la Clínica Universidad de Navarra entonces Clínica Universitaria de Navarra en el último mes de su enfermedad. Sin embargo, cuando lo hizo, sus breves comentarios valen a veces más que una larga carta» (pp. 11-12). Sus padres se habían casado en 1908 en Melilla, se trasladaron después a Segovia y posteriormente a Madrid para volver en los años 20 a Segovia -Manuel fue nombrado profesor de la Academia de Artillería-, donde, cuando Guadalupe apenas tenía diez años, la familia vivió lo que la autora denomina con razón una «experiencia traumática» (p. 17): su padre participó activamente en el llama do «pleito de los artilleros» (1926), debido a la resistencia del arma de Artillería, tradicionalmente contraria a esta medida, por la arbitrariedad política a que podía dar lugar, a los ascensos militares por méritos de guerra, de la que era partidario el entonces dictador Miguel Primo de Rivera, quien de hecho la impuso, por R. D. de 9 de junio de 1926, y que dio lugar en la Academia de Segovia a una sublevación de alumnos y profesores.
The aim of this paper is to study the Neo-Catholic novel through the methodological tools supplied by the category of gender. ...the article will analyse the femininity and masculinity models that ...can be found in four representative novels of this period, which will be connected to the social and political project of Neo-Catholicism: the re-Christianization of society. .17 En realidad, esta sugerencia papal ya hacía tiempo que se estaba llevando a la práctica: en 1850 se comenzó a publicar en Roma La Civilta Cattolica bajo control directo de Pío IX y, en España, la prensa católica fue poco a poco ocupando posiciones en la conformación de la opinión pública desde la fundación de La Religión por Joaquín Roca y Cornet en 1837.18 Precisamente, este publicista catalán dio un importante paso en la progresiva aceptación del carácter moralizador de la novela por parte de muchos católicos con la publicación de Mujeres de la Biblia en 1850. Como ya ha sido apuntado por algunos especialistas, Cecilia Böhl pasó durante esos años posteriores al Bienio Progresista de perder simpatía entre los moderados a ganarla entre los emergentes neocatólicos.24 Buena muestra de ello es que ambas novelas fueron prologadas por dos autores en rápida transición hacia el neocatolicismo: el primero, el duque de Rivas, atemorizado por la experiencia del Bienio Progresista mientras que el segundo, Aparisi y Guijarro, tras haber defendido desde mediados de los años cuarenta un monarquismo sin fisuras.25 Ambos se quejaron de la ?inundación de ideas corruptoras y perversas, que a modo de los ejércitos del Anti-Cristo ... penetran cautelosos o invisibles en nuestros hogares, a enloquecer la cabeza de nuestros jóvenes, a manchar el casto seno de nuestras hijas?;26 pero a la vez alabaron a Fernán por valerse también de la novela para intentar ?luchar con la irrupción de ideas exóticas, que nos desnaturaliza y corrompe, y consignar las propiamente nacionales? Hugh McLeod, entre otros, ha hablado de la existencia en la Inglaterra victoriana de un movimiento social y cultural denominado cristianismo muscular (Muscular Christianity) que connotó de manera positiva la fortaleza física y moral entre los varones cristianos a través de la práctica del deporte.60 Quizá inspirado por este movimiento, llama la atención la caracterización que hace Wiseman de los protagonistas masculinos de su novela.
This thesis is a county study of Catholicism in Cheshire during the Long Reformation period - notionally 1560-1720, when Catholicism was a proscribed minority faith whose practice could attract ...significant penalties. It remained proscribed for a further century after this period, but was penalised somewhat more routinely than hitherto, and in that sense the 1720s marks a break point in the history of anti-Catholic persecution and thus a natural end point for this study. This revival of the county study genre, in vogue in the 1960s and early 1970s but subsequently historiographically less fashionable, seeks to interrogate the low-level evidence of early modern English Catholicism in the context of the substantial body of literature on the subject that has been produced over the last thirty years. Firstly, it will demonstrate the limited impact of anti-Catholic initiatives in Cheshire over the period. It will show that only a small minority of Catholics were penalised: initially, during the mid-late Elizabethan years, by imprisonment, when no alternative punishment proved operable; and latterly, through distraint of property. There were, however, peaks and troughs in this trajectory, most noticeably in the post-Civil War period. Secondly, it will show how significant the alternatives to the traditional model of gentry-centred recusant Catholicism were: the different forms of Catholicism (recusant and church papist, seigneurially and plebeian led) that flourished in the county. They show that Catholicism there was stronger than previous generations of historians have acknowledged. Lastly, it will differentiate the degree of confessional co-existence with the wider community - limited integration in matters of faith and family life, but rather more integrated in matters of everyday life which touched on neither of these areas. It will also demonstrate engagement with the principal national issues of the era - the Civil War, the Popish Plot, and Jacobitism.
In this thesis I set out to explore Catholicism as a felt sense in Seamus Heaney's poetry from his first collection Death of a Naturalist (1966) to his last collection Human Chain (2010). Chapter One ...sets the scene of Heaney's Catholic sensibility, which was rooted in his childhood home of Mossbawn and formalised in the learning of the Catholic Catechism at school and his early exposure to writers such as Gerard Manley Hopkins and Patrick Kavanagh. Chapter Two identifies a Catholic sensibility in Heaney's use of sacramental language which consecrates the body as a unique good in Death of a Naturalist, manual labour in Door into the Dark, and place in Wintering Out. Chapter Three looks at Heaney's treatment of death in terms of Catholic ritual, including the veneration of relics (North), and the tactile piety which informs some of the elegies in Field Work and The Haw Lantern. Heaney's complex engagement with Catholicism in Station Island is the subject of Chapter Four, and I read the collection alongside his translation Sweeney Astray, published in the same year. Chapter Five explores Heaney's attempts to go beyond the limits of the material world (Seeing Things), and identifies this longing in the nature of love, and its demands, in The Spirit Level (exemplified in the saints) and Electric Light. In Chapter Six I argue that Catholicism operates in a more embedded way in the poems of District and Circle and Human Chain but remains as part of a sensibility which expands to include writers such as the classical poet Virgil. I identify four ways in which Catholicism operates in Heaney's poetry and draw attention to how these weave their way through the six chapters as: i) iconography, ii) sacramental vision, iii) poetic process, and iv) syntax and form.
