Pomiędzy pozostającym pod panowaniem francuskiej dynastii Lusignanów Cyprem a sułtanatem Mameluków dochodziło do stosunkowo częstej wymiany posłów na przestrzeni XV stulecia. W 1426 r. Mamelucy, ...sprowokowani wspieranymi przez Lusignanów i działającymi z cypryjskich portów piratami atakującymi żeglugę muzułmańską i wybrzeże syryjsko-palestyńskie, dokonali inwazji na wyspę. W jej trakcie pokonali wojska Lusignanów w bitwie pod Chirokitią, króla Janusa pojmali w niewolę i uprowadzili do Kairu, a Królestwo Cypru znalazło się pod zwierzchnictwem Mameluków. Władcy Cypru, zarówno Janus, jak i jego następcy Szarlota i Jakub II, podejmowali próby zrzucenia tego zwierzchnictwa, na przykład wysyłając poselstwa z prośbami o pomoc finansową i militarną m.in. do Polski (1432). Opisy misji dyplomatycznych kierowanych przez królów Cypru do Egiptu pochodzą z kilku źródeł, w tym z relacji kastylijskiego szlachcica Pero Tafura, który w latach 1436–1439 odbył podróż aż po trzech kontynentach. Został on w 1437 r. wysłany przez króla Cypru Jana II do Kairu przed oblicze sułtana w celu ustalenia formy płacenia corocznego trybutu. Relacja Tafura jest również interesująca z uwagi na opisy ceremoniałów obecnych wówczas na dworze sułtana oraz specjalnych procedur, którym musieli się poddawać dyplomaci zamierzający uzyskać audiencję u władcy Mameluków.

Specyficzna i ambiwalentna jest rola Wikipedii, będącej pierwszym, a nierzadko jedynym źródłem informacji. Informacyjna i edukacyjna funkcja internetu ustępuje jednak miejsca kulturze popularnej i rozrywce. Starożytny Egipt pojawia się powszechnie w formie toposów i stereotypów odwołujących się do tradycji antycznej, a także nowożytnej egiptomanii. Tajemniczość, egzotyczność, potęga, bogactwo i piękno egipskich wytworów kultury materialnej i duchowej mają swoje odniesienia w postaci takich motywów, jak piramidy, hieroglify, mumie, bogowie z głowami zwierząt, złote artefakty, piękne egipskie królowe. Szczególną formą, o ogromnym wpływie i zasięgu, są memy wykorzystujące egipską ikonografię i realia, co często służy do komentowania współczesności.
Twórczość najsławniejszego litewskiego malarza i kompozytora M.K. Čiurlionisa (1875–1911) zadziwia oryginalnością i sugestywnością artystycznych form. Przez całe życie interesował się on kulturą ...starożytnego Egiptu, ale niewiele wiadomo o tym, jaki miało to wpływ na jego twórczość i jak głębokie było to zainteresowanie. Poszukiwano zatem źródeł, z których mógł korzystać, gdy malował obrazy inspirowane starożytnym Egiptem.

Prispevek osvetljuje dva glavna problemska sklopa, ki se kažeta pri obravnavi korpusa poznoantičnega pesnika Flavija Dioskora oz. Dioskora iz Afroditopolisa iz 6. stoletja po Kr. Razprava izhaja iz ...kratke biografske osvetlitve, pregleda kontekstov Dioskorovega ustvarjanja in prevoda treh tipičnih primerov njegovih pesmi (dveh epitalamijev in enega enkomija). Najprej se posvečam vrednotenju Dioskorove poezije v 20. stoletju: »najslabši pesnik antike«, nesrečni epitet, ki zgoščeno povzema splošne sodbe o njegovem delu do poznega 20. stoletja, skušam prikazati v luči dveh širših problematik: vpeljanega razumevanja celotnega obdobja »pozne antike« kot obdobja dekadence in propada ali pa kot prehodnega obdobja na eni, in kot problem vrednotenja »priložnostne poezije« in figure »priložnostnega pesnika« na drugi strani. Prevedene pesmi nato postavljam v kontekst poznoantične literature, oziroma natančneje, literarnega ustvarjanja v Egiptu 6. stoletja. S tem naslavljam drugi problemski sklop, to je problematika »krščanskega« in »poganskega« v njegovi poeziji, v zvezi s katero izpostavljam motiv Dioniza in Nila v varstvu krščanskega Boga, ki se pojavi v Epitalamiju Izaku (P.Cair.Masp. III 67318): probleme tovrstnih dinamik med »krščanskim« in »poganskim« je na primeru opusa Nonosa iz Panopolisa (avtorja »poganskega« Epa o Dionizu in »krščanske« Parafraze Janezovega evangelija) uspešno reševal Robert Shorrock, in sicer s pomočjo modela dveh poznoantičnih »pesniških person« oz. literarnih kodov, namreč »pesnika muz« in »pesnika Kristusa«. V nadaljevanju razprave argumentiram, da se za obravnavo poezije Flavija Dioskora takšen pristop kaže kot le deloma primeren. Menim namreč, da je dinamiko med »krščanskim« in »poganskim« ravno zaradi »priložnostnosti« te poezije, torej dejstva, da je še posebej tesno povezana s svojim pragmatičnim kontekstom (in tako s konvencijami obreda, npr. v kontekstu poroke), ustrezneje kot (zgolj) literarno igro razumeti kot literarni odraz žive verske dinamike v Egiptu 6. stoletja.

In this pioneering history of transportation and communication in the modern Middle East, On Barak argues that contrary to accepted wisdom technological modernity in Egypt did not drive a sense of ...time focused on standardization only. Surprisingly, the introduction of the steamer, railway, telegraph, tramway, and telephone in colonial Egypt actually triggered the development of unique timekeeping practices that resignified and subverted the typical modernist infatuation with expediency and promptness. These countertempos, predicated on uneasiness over “dehumanizing” European standards of efficiency, sprang from and contributed to non-linear modes of arranging time. Barak shows how these countertempos formed and developed with each new technological innovation during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, contributing to a particularly Egyptian sense of time that extends into the present day, exerting influence over contemporary political language in the Arab world. The universal notion of a modern mechanical standard time and the deviations supposedly characterizing non-Western settings “from time immemorial,” On Time provocatively argues, were in fact mutually constitutive and mutually reinforcing.
In this ground-breaking work, Gerasimos Tsourapas examines how migration and political power are inextricably linked, and enhances our understanding of how authoritarian regimes rely on labour ...emigration across the Middle East and the Global South. Dr Tsourapas identifies how autocracies develop strategies to tie cross-border mobility to their own survival, highlighting domestic political struggles and the shifting regional and international landscape. In Egypt, the ruling elite has long shaped labour emigration policy in accordance with internal and external tactics aimed at regime survival. Dr Tsourapas draws on a wealth of previously-unavailable archival sources in Arabic and English, as well as extensive original interviews with Egyptian elites and policy-makers in order to produce a novel account of authoritarian politics in the Arab world. This volume provides novel social-scientific and historical approaches to religious identifications in late antique (3rd–12th century) Egyptian papyri, bridging the gap between two academic fields ...that have been infrequently in full conversation: papyrology and the study of religion. Through eleven in-depth case studies of Christian, Islamic, “pagan,” Jewish, Manichaean, and Hermetic texts and objects, this book offers new interpretations on markers of religious identity in papyrus documents written in Coptic, Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic, and Arabic. Using papyri as a window into the lives of ordinary believers, it explores their religious behavior and choices in everyday life. Three valuable perspectives are outlined and explored in these documents: a critical reflection on the concept of identity and the role of religious groups, a situational reading of religious repertoire and symbols, and a focus on speech acts as performative and efficacious utterances. The issue of homosexuality in ancient Egypt has been studied for less than a century. Both the attitude towards, and the methodology regarding, this issue changed constantly over time. The author ...presents a critical review of the literature, together with some original interpretations. The most important sources, which are relatively not numerous and often ambiguous, are described. The written sources include religious and literary texts e.g. the tale Horus and Seth, the story of King Nefer-ka-Ra and “General” Sa-senet, mentions in the instructions of Peteh-hetep, the Book of the Dead (the “negative confession” in the Chapter 125), the Coffin Texts and dream-books. Analysis of the texts reveals many controversial questions concerning the context of the message, as well as the phraseology and proper meaning of the terms related to the issue of sexuality. Two categories clearly appear: homosexual rape, with the intention to dominate and humiliate an enemy, and a emotional relationship leading to sexual acts. The iconographic sources are less numerous, and their interpretations much disputable. They include the images of Ni-ankh-Khenemu and Khenemu-hetep in their shared tomb at Saqqara, the depictions of same-sex couples, graffiti, and drawings on ostraca depicting (homosexual?) couples having sex. A large part of the sources in unequivocal, and in the case of lesbian love simply vague. Data on the attitude of the ancient Egyptians towards homosexual relations are ambivalent at best. They were considered socially incorrect but not penalized.
