Abstract
This article reads the resurrected Catelyn Stark, also known as Lady Stoneheart, in George R. R. Martin’s series of fantasy novels A Song of Ice and Fire, as a spectral adaptation of female ...silence in the works of William Shakespeare, especially of Hermione in The Winter’s Tale. Like Hermione, Catelyn experiences the loss of her son, dies herself shortly thereafter, and miraculously returns from the dead as a stone-like, voiceless figure. Yet, unlike Hermione, resurrection transforms Catelyn into a merciless embodiment of vengeance, whose grotesque appearance and persona shed a provocative new light on the representation of maternal grief and misogynist violence in Shakespearean drama. Hermione’s ambivalent silence at the end of The Winter’s Tale thus takes on an unequivocal tone of rage in her contemporary specter. Lady Stoneheart also exemplifies the adaptational tension between Martin’s series and the TV show Game of Thrones, in the latter of which Lady Stoneheart—while being absent—still maintains a haunting discursive presence.
With its complexity and frequent depiction of violence and sexuality, George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series is evidently aimed at an adult readership. Considering its setting in a ...feudalistic society, it is all the more surprising that many of the point of view characters are children or teenagers who are a priori in a position of powerlessness. This position is even exacerbated for the youngest children of House Stark once the game for the Iron Throne begins. Although they experience violence and have to face dangerous situations, the loss of their home and family is also reminiscent of the step out of the social order which marks the beginning of countless adventure stories and hero’s journeys in literary history. The article shows how Bran, Sansa and Arya Stark are initially subjected to the power and whims of others in a world marked by war, violence and arbitrariness, and how they eventually develop strategies to realise their inherent potential for empowerment in the course of their respective journeys.

En este trabajo se ha realizado un análisis de las actividades sociales y creativas llevadas a cabo por seguidores de la saga literaria Canción de Hielo y Fuego en la página web Los Siete Reinos. El ...estudio ha permitido comprobar cómo los lectores amplían y manipulan los contenidos textuales para modificar y expandir la experiencia lúdica y estética relacionada con las obras literarias: el receptor se convierte en co-creador de la obra. Este hecho evidencia la importancia de los espacios de afinidad en el proceso de recepción, ya que favorecen una interacción que va mucho más allá de la comprensión e interpretación del texto original. Desde esta perspectiva, se hace una revisión de las prácticas creativas en este escenario de comunicación para concluir que poseen un potencial formativo extraordinario con el que plantear propuestas innovadoras en el ámbito de la educación literaria.
Working on the hugely successful series of novels known collectively as A Song of Ice and Fire, George R. R. Martin is known to have drawn much of his inspiration from real-life events, landmarks in ...the history of the Middle Ages, such as the Hundred Years’ War, the Wars of the Roses, and the Crusades. It is not known, however, to what degree he actually relies in his work on sources of genuinely medieval provenance, since he himself frequently admits that amongst those that made the biggest impact on his writing are modern works of fiction, such as Maurice Druon’s heptalogy Les Rois maudits (2019 1955–1977). It is not impossible, though, that at least some features of Martin’s series have more or less direct parallels in medieval literature. One such element may be so-called kennings, the highly-stylised circumlocutions found in plenty in the poetic works of early Germanic literature and whose diction appears to shine through some of the series’ titles.
This article examines the relationship between power and religion in Westeros, the continent created by George R. R. Martin in A Song of Ice and Fire. Participants in the conflict of Westeros, I ...argue, embrace religion as a source of legitimacy to gain power and to support their claims. By doing so, the conflict acquires a religious dimension. They are not only fighting a civil war, but also a religious war.

This article aims at analyzing the emblematic quote “winter is coming,” from George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, as a sylleptic structure, since it conceals a natural, a supernatural, and a ...political meaning. In the light of a collapsological reading, it turns out that the overlapping meanings entangle with the numerous collapses and accentuate the mystification of the motto, thus establishing a gloomy atmosphere on the continent of Westeros. As the multiple collapses come to define the genre of the saga and give the story its rhythm, I will argue that the syllepsis encapsulates the dynamics of collapse which paradoxically participate in the de-structuring of the universe in which the characters evolve and in the structuring of the novels.
U radu se definira pojam neomedievalizma i donosi problematika vezana za njega. Rad se prije svega temelji na teorijskim postavkama Umberta Eca, koje se sistematski primjenjuju na tri reprezentativna ...modela: Tolkienov, Disneyjev i model Georga R. R. Martina. Cilj je komparativne valorizacije analiza interpretacije srednjovjekovnog imaginarija u popularnoj kulturi te kategorizacija odabranih primjera te kulture unutar kreiranih modela. Konačno, autor na temelju komparativne analize pokušava u uskim granicama rada objasniti složenu mrežu motivacije za rekreiranjem srednjovjekovlja i njegovih manifestacija unutar modernog društva 20. i 21. stoljeća.
