Izvir Krupe in reko so razglasili za naravni spomenik; izvir, izjava Mira Ivanovič, Zavod za varstvo ABSEC, Krupa, zloženka.
Thirteen years ago, an ecological disaster struck the municipality of Semič. At the source of the Krupa River, toxic PCB traces were detected, which were released into it by the Iskra Company. After the emission of toxic waste into the environment was prohibited and the production of dangerous products was stopped, the situation finally improved. The source of the Krupa River and the river itself were declared a natural monument. A statement by Mira Ivanovič from the Institute of ABSEC is presented in the clip.

The clip is showing another in a series of ecological disasters - the contamination of drinking water with pesticides. In the afternoon of the 21st of July 1989, the republican sanitary inspector issued a prohibition on the use of water from reservoirs in Skorba near Ptuj. In fact, the water contains ten times more pesticides than permissible. In those exceptional circumstances the authorities were facing a huge problem regarding a lack of tanks in order to distribute drinking water.

PCB-ji so prišli v reko preko odpadnih vod Semiške tovarne in odpadnih izdelkov.
The ecological disaster which took place at the source of the Krupa River (municipality of Semič) is considered as one of the greatest environmental contaminations with toxic PCBs (Polychlorinated biphenyls). In the vicinity of the now former capacitors production plant of Iskra Semič, the River Krupa was heavily polluted, as discovered when wanting to use it as a source for regional water supply. PCBs entered the river through wastewater and waste products from the Semič factory Iskra. Production of PCBs lasted until 1983, when the Company changed the production. Recent research in this area has shown that PCBs are still present in specific products (eggs, cow's milk, nuts ...), but PCB contamination of the air is no longer a problem. As for the river - the Krupa remains the most polluted river of PCB toxins in the world. Given that in our area chlorinated herbicides and pesticides or any kind of other products containing PCB remains, are no longer in use, a continuing risk of environmental pollution by PCB remains a great danger as it is still present in not just a handful of the transformers and capacitors made by the Company.
Presented video was made after revelations of the catastrophic environmental pollution. Tone Poljšak, Deputy Chairman of the Republican Committee for environmental protection and regulation of traffic and Dr. Albin Pečaver from the Institute of Forensic Medicine and Hygiene gave their statements regarding the issue.
