Focusing on six popular British girls' periodicals, Kristine Moruzi explores the debate about the shifting nature of Victorian girlhood between 1850 and 1915. During an era of significant political, ...social, and economic change, girls' periodicals demonstrate the difficulties of fashioning a coherent, consistent model of girlhood. The mixed-genre format of these magazines, Moruzi suggests, allowed inconsistencies and tensions between competing feminine ideals to exist within the same publication. Adopting a case study approach, Moruzi shows that the Monthly Packet, the Girl of the Period Miscellany, the Girl's Own Paper, Atalanta, the Young Woman, and the Girl's Realm each attempted to define and refine a unique type of girl, particularly the religious girl, the 'Girl of the Period,' the healthy girl, the educated girl, the marrying girl, and the modern girl. These periodicals reflected the challenges of embracing the changing conditions of girls' lives while also attempting to maintain traditional feminine ideals of purity and morality. By analyzing the competing discourses within girls' periodicals, Moruzi's book demonstrates how they were able to frame feminine behaviour in ways that both reinforced and redefined the changing role of girls in nineteenth-century society while also allowing girl readers the opportunity to respond to these definitions.
What is a magazine? For decades, women's magazines were regularly published, print-bound guidebooks aimed at neatly defined segments of the female audience. Crisp pages, a well-composed visual ...aesthetic, an intimate tone, and a distinctive editorial voice were among the hallmarks of women's glossies up through the turn of this century. Yet amidst an era of convergent media technologies, participatory culture, and new demands from advertisers, questions about the identity of women's magazines have been cast up for reflection. Remake, Remodel: Women's Magazines in the Digital Age offers a unique glimpse inside the industry and reveals how executives and content creators are remaking their roles, their audiences, and their products at this critical historic juncture. Through in-depth interviews with women's magazine producers, an examination of hundreds of trade press reports, and in-person observations at industry summits, Brooke Erin Duffy chronicles a fascinating shift in print culture and technology from the magazine as object to the magazine as brand. She draws on these findings to contribute to timely debates about media producers' labor conditions, workplace hierarchies, and creative processes in light of transformed technologies and media economies.
En el presente articulo, se presentaran dos formas de "herejia" en el trabajo de Manuel Zapata Olivella como novelista y como critico cultural durante la decada de 1960. En primer lugar, observaremos ...como, en su novela En Chima nace un santo, las acciones hereticas de los habitantes de Chima plantean una afrenta directa a la legitimidad de la autoridad eclesiastica que deriva, al mismo tiempo, en el ejercicio de la violencia represiva por parte de las autoridades estatales y, en cierta forma, en la conciencia politica por parte de los chimaleros. En segundo lugar, observaremos como el ejercicio de critica cultural y literaria que Zapata Olivella realizo desde la revista Letras Nacionales y otras publicaciones durante la decada de 1960 puede ser considerado tambien como "heretico" en el contexto de las pugnas por la legitimidad cultural en el naciente campo literario colombiano. Este paralelismo u "homologia" se realizara desde el punto de vista de la sociologia de la cultura de Pierre Bourdieu y su teoria de los campos. Palabras clave: Manuel Zapata Olivella, En Chima nace un santo, teoria de los campos, herejia, literatura latinoamericana, literatura colombiana In this article, we will present two forms of "heresy" in the work of Manuel Zapata Olivella as a novelist and cultural critic during the 1960s. First, we will observe how, in his novel En Chima nace un santo, the heretical actions of the inhabitants of Chima pose a direct affront to the legitimacy of the ecclesiastical authority, which derives, at the same time, in the exercise of repressive violence by the state authorities and, in a certain way, in the political awareness of the Chimaleros. Secondly, we will explore how the exercise of cultural and literary criticism that Zapata Olivella carried out in the magazine Letras Nacionales and other publications during the 1960s can also be considered "heretical" in the context of the struggles for cultural legitimacy within the emerging Colombian literary field. This parallelism or "homology" will be constructed from the point of view of Pierre Bourdieu's sociology of culture and his field theory.
