Using the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) method followed by the internally contracted multi-reference configuration interaction (MRCI) approach in combination with the ...correlation-consistent basis sets, this paper studies the potential energy curves of X2Σ+, 22Σ+, 32Σ+, 12Σ-, A2Π, 22Π, 32Π, 12Delta, 14Σ+, 24Σ+, 14Σ-, 14Π, 24Π and 14Delta Λ-S states of BeBr molecule and the corresponding 30 Ω states for the first time. All the Λ-S states correlate to the first two dissociation channels, Be(1Sg) + Br(2Pu) and Be(3Pu) + Br(2Pu), of BeBr molecule. Of these Λ-S states, the 32Π and 24Π are found to be repulsive without the spin-orbit coupling, whereas 14Π, 24Π, 32Π and 24Σ+ are found to be repulsive with the spin-orbit coupling included. A2Π and 22Σ+ possess the double well whether the spin-orbit coupling effect is included or not. Only 14Σ+, 14Σ-, 12Π and 22Π are found to be the inverted Λ-S states. The spin-orbit coupling is accounted for by the state interaction approach with Breit-Pauli Hamiltonian using the all-electron cc-pCVTZ basis set. The potential energy curves determined by the internally contracted MRCI method are corrected for size-extensivity errors by means of the Davidson correction. Core-valence correlation correction is calculated with a cc-pCVTZ basis set. Scalar relativistic correction is included using the third-order Douglas-Kroll Hamiltonian approximation at the level of cc-pVTZ basis set. The spectroscopic parameters of all the Λ-S and Ω bound states are evaluated. The spectroscopic parameters are compared with those reported in the literature. Fair agreement is found between the present results and available measurements. In particular, the energy splitting of 204.43 cm-1 in the A2Π Λ-S state agrees well with the measurements of 201 cm-1. Analyses demonstrate that the spectroscopic parameters reported here can be expected to be reliably predicted ones.
This essay deals with the deficiencies of the radical relativist approaches and the positive aspects of moderate relativist theories, especially with regard to the confrontation of both during the ...building ofcollective identities. On the one side we have the universalistic principles, based on 18th century rationalism, which are perceived in the Third World as a leveling tendency. Particularistic currents are based on relativism. They seek to understand each case by reconstructing its history. Making a critique of both tendencies, the author attempts at a prolific synthesis of them, which are considered as complementary. For instance universal ethics and human rights could build the fundamentals for an effective right to difference.

The neglected Platonic dialogue Euthydemus is peculiar in many ways. It is, apparently, an extensive catalogue of bad arguments by disgraceful sophists; but its complex composition suggests that this ...focuses attention on the shape and nature of argument—attention that some think Plato is incapable of giving. He uses the idiom of games, and of seriousness and play, to provoke reflection on logical and syntactic structure and their normative features; but to see how he does so we need to consider the complex background of the fiction of a Platonic dialogue, and its use of surprise and humour. Comparison with the bbc Radio 4 game ‘Mornington Crescent’ might help.
We calculate in the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization framework all leading relativistic corrections to the exclusive production of χcJ+γ in e+e− annihilation. In particular, we compute for ...the first time contributions induced by octet operators with a chromoelectric field. The matching coefficients multiplying production long distance matrix elements (LDMEs) are determined through perturbative matching between QCD and NRQCD at the amplitude level. Technical challenges encountered in the nonrelativistic expansion of the QCD amplitudes are discussed in detail. The main source of uncertainty comes from the not so well known LDMEs. Accounting for it, we provide the following estimates for the production cross sections at s=10.6 GeV: σ(e+e−→χc0+γ)=(1.4±0.3) fb, σ(e+e−→χc1+γ)=(15.0±3.3) fb, and σ(e+e−→χc2+γ)=(4.5±1.4) fb.
A number of arguments against moral relativism are based on the reality of intracultural conflict or the related possibility of sliding down a slippery slope and out the door of morality altogether. ...The first batch of arguments draws upon the evident fact that cultures are not unitary or homogenous but contain subgroups at odds with each other. The second batch is based on the claim that if moral truth is relativized to a culture, consistency demands that it eventually be relativized to the individual, and with that comes the end of morality. In this paper, (A) moral relativism is first defined, clarified, and defended—these preliminaries being necessary, given what follows—and (B) the common but infrequently discussed arguments mentioned above are distinguished, exposed, explained, evaluated, and ultimately rejected.
To be called a relativist, especially a moral relativist, is to be condemned as someone who holds that “anything goes”. Frequently the term is part of a dichotomy: either accept relativism or accept ...universalism: the view that only one true morality exists. This book defends a new version of relativism that is both an alternative to, and fits between, universalism and relativism as usually defined. Pluralistic relativism does accord with one aspect of relativism as usually defined: there is no single true morality. Beyond that, it is argued that there can be a plurality of true moralities, moralities that exist across different traditions and cultures, all of which address facets of the same problem: how we are to live well together. A comparative and naturalistic approach is applied to the understanding of moralities, with discussion of a wide array of positions and texts within the Western canon as well as in Chinese philosophy, and drawing on not only philosophy, but also psychology, evolutionary theory, history, and literature in making a case for the importance of pluralism in moral life and in establishing the virtues of acceptance and accommodation. A central theme is that there is no single value or principle or ordering of values and principles that offers a uniquely true path for human living, but variations according to different contexts that carry within them a common core of human values. We should thus be modest about our own morality, learn from other approaches, and accommodate different practices in our pluralistic society.
The hydrogen molecule has become a test ground for quantum electrodynamical calculations in molecules. Expanding beyond studies on stable hydrogenic species to the heavier radioactive tritium-bearing ...molecules, we report on a measurement of the fundamental T2 vibrational splitting (v=0→1) for J=0–5 rotational levels. Precision frequency metrology is performed with high-resolution coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy at an experimental uncertainty of 10–12 MHz, where sub-Doppler saturation features are exploited for the strongest transition. The achieved accuracy corresponds to a 50-fold improvement over a previous measurement, and it allows for the extraction of relativistic and QED contributions to T2 transition energies.
We report the first measurement of rapidity-odd directed flow (v1) for D0 and D0¯ mesons at midrapidity (|y|<0.8) in Au+Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV using the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy ...Ion Collider. In 10–80% Au+Au collisions, the slope of the v1 rapidity dependence (dv1/dy), averaged over D0 and D0¯ mesons, is −0.080±0.017(stat)±0.016(syst) for transverse momentum pT above 1.5 GeV/c. The absolute value of D0 meson dv1/dy is about 25 times larger than that for charged kaons, with 3.4σ significance. These data give a unique insight into the initial tilt of the produced matter, and offer constraints on the geometric and transport parameters of the hot QCD medium created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.
Critical discourse studies do not often consider lateral power struggles between social groups with competing and intersecting interests, ideas and identities. As such, there is often little to no ...consideration of potentially detrimental outcomes or unintended consequences when proposing radical and transformative change. This paper therefore argues for critical relativism in CDS, considering intersecting power structures and struggles between potentially competing social groups. In illustration, this paper takes the case of ongoing antagonism over the socio-legal recognition of transgender identities in the West. Transgender identities are arguably more hotly debated at present than any other in relation to their socio-legal recognition and its perceived implications on other social groups. This paper therefore discusses how the interests of transgender socio-legal gender recognition intersect and compete with the interests of other social groups, whether in reality or only in perception. In so doing, this paper contends that the transformative impetus of CDS must account for the mechanisms and outcomes of lateral struggle. In a world of ever-increasing awareness of the interconnected systems of dominance and resistance, embedding critical relativism in CDS is imperative if it is to evolve and maintain relevance as an approach to meaningfully analysing discourse and championing social change.
