Art therapy can be particularly successful in addressing the specific needs of individuals struggling with anorexia nervosa (AN) through the use of the creative process. This article provides an ...understanding of the effect of malnourishment on the brain for individuals with AN and discusses how their unique needs can be met through the application of the Nourishment Framework. The Nourishment Framework is a structured treatment approach that utilizes the individual components of the Expressive Therapies Continuum (ETC) to address specific clinical needs for those struggling with AN. A case study documents the application of the Nourishment Framework while highlighting the directives and materials used to meet client goals.
Contemporary Virtual Reality production often relies on increasing visual fidelity in order to enhance the creation of deep-space 360-degree worlds. In turn, performance is situated as one component ...of realist space that needs high-resolution images in order to support it. This paper considers what happens when this visual fidelity is foregone in favour of the production of a haptic, tactile visuality that draws attention to the material qualities of the 360-degree visual sphere and the performances that are a part of it. Using my autobiographical short 360-degree film PND as an example, I advocate that low-fi visual artefacts such as digital noise, over and under exposure, and glitch movement can provide a productive way to create new, embodied, relationships between performer and viewer in VR's 360-degree space. In this way, new artistic paths for working with VR and performance are explored.
Why do democratic institutions struggle to maintain their vitality and legitimacy in hard times? In this special issue of Government and Opposition, we identify a loss of solidarity as the root cause ...of Western political dysfunction over the past decade. The argument is developed in four parts. The first part is theoretical insofar as it sketches the causal mechanism that describes what we mean by democratic dysfunction. Here we set out some of the key concepts that are central to our project. The second part is empirical insofar as it offers four negative illustrations of the fundamental problématique, which gives us the opportunity to suggest why this collection of research articles is relevant to the contemporary debate on democracy and its discontents. The third part explores the many possible sources of democratic dysfunction, which we have organized around two thematic clusters. Here we introduce the other articles in our special issue. The fourth and last part suggests implications of living in a democratic world with waning solidarity, allowing us to draw preliminary conclusions and suggest avenues for future research.
This inquiry is based upon an unexpected archive: unclaimed material from a frame and photo developing shop in Johannesburg, South Africa. It expands upon numerous investigations into the visual ...economies and biographies of photographs. For example, Cohen (2014) and Feyder (2015) worked with caches of negatives that were found by chance or stored away for decades. In the first instance, the researcher’s primary interests lay with the ethical implications of image making and display. In the second, the goal was to reconnect members of the “source community” of a particular photographer’s work. The research strategies of both trumped performing a close analysis of the photos themselves.
This article examines the work of internet activist and artist Paolo Cirio, whose practice intersects with matters of copyright, privacy, transparency and corporate finance. His project Loophole for ...All, for example, exposes the practice of tax evasion in the Cayman Islands by counterfeiting Certificate of Incorporation documents. An important aspect of Cirio’s work is how he names himself in the process. Placed within our contemporary ‘data turn’, his work is framed critically in this article in terms of a ‘new structuralist’ account of culture and society. The article attends to the view that power increasingly comes through the algorithm, but argues that we risk reifying so-called generative rules, which may simply be algorithms out of sight. Cirio’s art practice helps focus on what it means to make a critique of contemporary and ubiquitous algorithm structures. As part of this, the article considers how ‘anonymity’ underlies subversive art practices of the 20th century and contemporary protest groups, but that this anonymity arguably undermines attempts to effect change.

From girlhood to adult, Eileen ...Lavery inspired her father. In her teens and twenties Eileen took on many parts for her father - in fancy dress as the bizarre White Queen on horseback as The Amazon, and with her racket in The Tennis Player. There are stunning head studies and she appears beside her step-mother in La Belle Mere and the great Artist's Studio in the National Gallery of Ireland. But now, as a child, dressed for her first communion, she is iconic.
Resumo Sendo fundamental a manutenção de um processo de reflexão constante para que a consolidação da Reforma Psiquiátrica possa se dar sem um “engessamento” de práticas que atrapalharia a proposta ...de atendimento personalizado, adequado à realidade específica de cada caso, faz-se importante observar as experiências que vêm acontecendo nos dispositivos de Atenção Psicossocial. Por isto, este artigo relata experiências ocorridas em um CAPS AD nos anos de 2011 a 2014, narrando o processo de implementação de uma oficina de fotografia e suas implicações. Percebeu-se que, propondo uma atividade aberta, flexível às demandas dos usuários, foi possível despertar interesses artísticos e de gestão, que culminaram no engajamento em um coletivo de fotografia - algo que não se deu por uma obrigatoriedade de frequência a atividades, mas por uma abertura da oficina aos interesses de cada participante, o que funcionou melhor para o aumento da “adesão”.
This article revisits a Platonic idea that has been formative for the history of aesthetics and then explores how this idea can be reinterpreted meaningfully in today’s aesthetic context. The ...Platonic idea I discuss (which Plato introduces in Ion and Phaedrus) is that artistic creation and its appreciative reception involve a form of divine possession. After exploring how this nonrational, supernatural idea has been critically countered yet repeatedly recurs in important subsequent theories of aesthetic experienced proposed by rational thinkers, my presentation suggests how we might give the notion of possession a more naturalistic explanation. I exemplify this through an analysis of performance art presented in The Adventures of the Man in Gold.
This article presents some thoughts about Duo Mimexe performative research in relation to Corporeal Mime, over 2018 in the USA. That experience has integrated the residency in laboratory mode with ...Thomas Leabhart, Leonard Pitt, Corinne Soum and Steven Wasson, Étienne Decroux’s former assistants, aiming to understand with studies of re-enactment and the body as an archive the artistic and pedagogical resonances of that art in its current activities, and its intercultural perspectives. The character of the expanded atelier strengthened in the experience is discussed, concluding that the decrouvian artistic manner can serve as a guide for research based on practice, even generating Art. Ce texte présente des réflexions sur la recherche performative réalisée par Duo Mimexe en 2018 aux États-Unis en lien avec le Mime Corporel. L’expérience a intégré la convivialité, en mode laboratoire, avec Thomas Leabhart, Leonard Pitt, Corinne Soum et Steven Wasson, anciens assistants d’Étienne Decroux, afin de comprendre les résonances artistiques et pédagogiques de cet art dans ses activités actuelles, dans les perspectives interculturelles, avec des études de reperformance et le corps comme archives. On discute le caractère de l’atelier élargi renforcé dans l’expérience, en concluant que la manière artistique decrouxien peut encore servir de guide pour les recherches basées sur la pratique générant, y compris, de l’art.
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of an innovative arts-based analysis process within the framework of portraiture methodology. The paper provides an example of how to ...incorporate multi-modal forms of analysis within the portraiture framework and offers a fluid, qualitative “recipe” for researchers interested in using portraiture methodology.
Design/methodology/approach
The study described in this paper explores vulnerability and resilience in teaching, using poetry and visual art as integrated elements of the portraiture process. Portraiture is a qualitative, feminist, artistic methodology that draws from ethnography and phenomenology to describe, understand and interpret complex human experiences.
Findings
This research resulted in the methodological development of three stages of analysis within the portraiture process: drafting vignettes, poetic expression and artistic expression. These stages of data analysis highlight the methodological richness of portraiture and center the researcher’s engagement in creative, intuitive and associative processes.
Research limitations/implications
This study contributes to existing scholarship that extends portraiture methodology by including additional aesthetic elements and offers a roadmap for what a multi-modal, arts-based analysis process might look like within the portraiture framework.
Originality/value
The study presented in this paper serves as an example of qualitative research that expands methodological boundaries and centers the role of intuition, association and creativity in research. This work serves as a unique and important contribution to the portraiture literature, offering a provocative roadmap for researchers who are drawn to portraiture as an appropriate methodology to explore their inquiry.
