This article examines the work of internet activist and artist Paolo Cirio, whose practice intersects with matters of copyright, privacy, transparency and corporate finance. His project Loophole for ...All, for example, exposes the practice of tax evasion in the Cayman Islands by counterfeiting Certificate of Incorporation documents. An important aspect of Cirio’s work is how he names himself in the process. Placed within our contemporary ‘data turn’, his work is framed critically in this article in terms of a ‘new structuralist’ account of culture and society. The article attends to the view that power increasingly comes through the algorithm, but argues that we risk reifying so-called generative rules, which may simply be algorithms out of sight. Cirio’s art practice helps focus on what it means to make a critique of contemporary and ubiquitous algorithm structures. As part of this, the article considers how ‘anonymity’ underlies subversive art practices of the 20th century and contemporary protest groups, but that this anonymity arguably undermines attempts to effect change.

This article analyses recent photographic practices that make visible underlying realities faced by Western societies today as they struggle to reconcile contradictions between their policies on ...race, immigration and ethnicity and the quest for an integrated national identity. The main case studies are drawn from the works of Mohamed Bourouissa and Tobias Zielony. The article demonstrates how their photographic projects confront the logic of social and cultural marginalisation of the immigrant communities, which often overlaps with their spatial consignment to urban peripheries. By combining reality and fiction, symbolism and documentation, these projects offer alternatives to the modes of representation available in photojournalism, as well as re-connecting with the genre of street photography.
The upheavals of glasnost and perestroika followed by the collapse of the Soviet Union remarkably transformed the art scene in Kyiv, launching Ukrainian contemporary art as a global ...phenomenon. The previously calm waters of the culturally provincial capital of the Ukrainian Soviet Republic became radically stirred with new and daring art made publicly visible for the first time since the avant-garde period of the early twentieth century. As artists were freed from the dictates of the fading Communist ideology and the constraints of late socialist realism, an explosion of styles emerged, creating an effect of baroque excess. This exhibition catalogue traces and documents the diverse artistic manifestations of these transitional and exhilarating years in Kyiv while providing some historical artworks for context. Published in partnership with the Zimmerli Museum.
Deskins focuses on the work by Judy Chicago entitled The Dinner Party and explains that her original methods offer a most proactive, critical, and approachable curatorial presentation, providing ...considerations for future research. Research on Chicago's The Dinner Party is abundant, focusing on the monumental table of thirty-nine place settings, each representing a woman who made some contribution to Western history. It was produced over a five-year period, from 1974 to 1979, with more than four hundred volunteers. Scholars have examined, praised, and criticized the installation, predominantly the sculptural table, from feminist and formal aesthetic perspectives. From Chicago's early innovations developing context through research, artistic experimentation, and creating a framework for honoring women's contributions to history, to The Dinner Party's contemporary display, the curatorial implications are significant.
