In early April 1918 painter, Amedeo Modigliani left Paris for the South of France, which produced a significant change in the technique and appearance of his paintings. This article brings together ...technical analyses of his three paintings including The little peasant, Young woman of the people and The Italian woman. Examination of several paintings from this period sheds light on Modigliani's drawing process: he composed the figure by first drawing an outline on the white ground with a carbon-based medium -- either pencil or charcoal -- and then rapidly painting colour within these lines. His drawing technique is evident in infra-red reflectography.
Manga is typically recognised in the Western world by the distinct visual styles of its characters and the vast array of symbolic signs that indicate various emotions and physical reactions. However, ...research into the use of visual techniques in the development of emotional life in manga is far from sufficient. This paper aims to explore the adoption of the cinematic technique - close-ups in manga - as a narrative tool to communicate a character's emotions and build tension between panels. It draws examples from two manga and conversations with 16 young British readers to examine the impact of close shots on reader engagement.
