Food insecurity and hunger, which are on the rise in affluent Western countries, may negatively affect children's physical, social, emotional and cognitive functioning. Although there is growing ...evidence of the high rate of food insecurity and hunger among Bedouin families and their children in Israel, little is known about how the children themselves experience the problem and how it impacts their life. The present study sought to explore and clarify children's experience of food insecurity. The research population included forty-two Israeli Bedouin impoverished children, aged nine to eleven. The analysis of children's drawing was chosen as the research instrument because it enabled psychological as well as phenomenological insight into the children's experience of food insecurity. This study, however, goes beyond the use of art to assess children's emotional state, because enabling the children to draw food insecurity gave them a strong and communicative public voice of their own. After the study had been completed, the drawings also proved useful in efforts to promote awareness about the personal, community, cultural and social dimensions of the problem and the need for community action and policy change to mitigate and eliminate it.
The foster care system is a resource for the whole community. It gives voice to the right of the child to grow in a family environment, when his or her natural family is temporarily not able to ...handle his or her best interest (art. 3, Convention on the Rights of the Child). Secondly, it activates relations, connects two worlds (natural and foster families), or even more than two, when it helps building bridges among foster families that support each other in their experiences, in order to face difficulties, and that can serve as a starting point for wider forms of solidarity among families. This article briefly describes some of the results of a qualitative research on foster care system, conducted in some cities in the Veneto (Italy) and based on in-depth interviews and focus groups. The research aims at analyzing crucial aspects of foster care system, namely specific problems related to the initial training and guidance for foster families.

Using a mainly qualitative approach, this paper analyses the presence, significance and efficacy of traditional mechanisms for the protection of children from conflicts and other adverse situations. ...Contemporary child protection debates seem to put emphasis on the western construction of childhood and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child as instruments of child protection. Taking a traditional-modernistic approach this paper argues that in many cases African communities practised and developed very strong and elaborate mechanisms for the observance and preservation of the welfare of children. It examines some of the enduring socio-cultural practices among the Acholi tribe in northern Uganda and their implications for the rehabilitation, resettlement and reintegration of children affected by armed conflict in the region. Findings suggest that there is strong potential for utilising traditional systems and practices to address rehabilitation and reintegration dynamics among children and young people, but complementary initiatives also need to be implemented to enhance the efficacy and, in some cases, adaptability of these institutions.
Narratives of security form increasingly European countries’ policies, laws and strategies on (or against) migration. According to these narratives, being both inside and outside, migrants challenge ...the States’ internal and external securitizing action. Drawing attention to the historical development of the concept and political meaning of security and of the role of the State in guaranteeing security, this article surveys the effects in terms of rights violation of the securitization of migration, with particular consideration of the rights of the unaccompanied migrant children moving to Italy and Spain.
