This article discusses the actions of "IFAC Choir", an extension project conduced at Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Acre, State of Amazon, Brazil. This project was conceived and developed in the city of Sena Madureira, between December 2011 and December 2012. Social impacts of this experience reinforce and validate the idea of building health and citizenship through the practice of singing together.
This chapter aims to present knowledge about teenage boys’ experiences of singing together in school. The study that the chapter is based on uses a phenomenological, gender theoretical and music ...didactic perspective. Earlier research shows that singing is practiced, and anticipated to be practiced more often by girls than boys in Western societies and schools. An analysis of interviews with the student Andreas and his music teacher Victor is presented, as they explore co-singing in a music profiled class in elementary school. The interviews were performed in 2013 and 2020, and analysed and presented as a «life story». It entails Andreas’ journey from being a teenage boy who refuses to sing in school to becoming a teenage boy who sings, and the role that Victor, as a music teacher, plays in Andreas’ journey. The chapter shows several gendered and pedagogical aspects in Andreas’ situation that influence him to at first mime and later on sing during choir lessons – especially the perception of singing as feminine coded and singing knowledge in choir
This article is the result of the Artistic and Culture Department extension project The Body in Music, The Music in Body: a community integration project that took music to community on Universidade ...Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) in two different ways: buy choir singing group and the music therapy activities on Parkinson Disease Patients Group The objectives of this project were to integrate choir singing to dance, develop music perception and body expression. Broadcast choir singing, improve facial expression and body movements. To reach these objectives were done body expression workshops, music and vocal technique rehearsals, rhythm exercises and some auditions among UFSC an other public places in Florianópolis.
In this paper, we draw an analogy between crowd-sensing scenarios and the real life activity of singing in a choir. We identify some similarities, in particular for what concerns the role of the ...network coordinator and the choir director, as well as the common desirability of eliminating non-collaborative behavior (free-riding). Inspired by this comparison, we identify some strategies that the "director" can implement during "choir rehearsals" and we give a game theoretic analysis of their effectiveness. The general model is based on characterizing the willingness to undertake effort for the common task as a user's private type, which is compared to the contribution cost to decide whether to contribute or free-ride. Imposing some access penalty is known to reduce significantly the onset of free-riding, and we discuss possible ways to implement such a penalty, namely, we compare a probabilistic exclusion of free riders, as well as a multiplicative and an additive penalty to access, and we show the better effectiveness of the last strategy.
This article takes account of a choir singing project with adolescents imprisoned in juvenile detention in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. This action is part of a policy related to the human rights ...and inclusion in a healthy, productive and supportive social cohabitation standard, in order to avoid the recurrence of the criminal behavior. This project is based on the conception that human beings live under permanent development, which transforms themselves and the social environment through the experiences with others. In this context, music increases the possibility of a subjects transformation by valuing their creative and spontaneous expression, besides promoting the development of artistic, social and cognitive skills in a constructive and oriented way. Based on from the principles of this proposal, rehearsals, reflective groups and presentations were designed. The methodology is centered in three basic principles: presence, endearment and authorship. In spite of the difficulties found, the activities evolved in a significant manner, resulting in healthier interactions among the adolescents and employees of the center, growing openness on the adolescents regarding the expression of their subjectivities, expansion of self-perception, interest in formulating a project of life and discovery of musical aptitudes.

Although health problems in musicians have been previously reported, not much is known about noise-induced hearing loss due to choir singing. However, there are data to show that peak levels of more ...than 110 dB SPL are produced in choir singing, and major parts of sound energy can be found below 1 kHz and even 500 Hz but not below 100 Hz. To find out about possible hearing loss due to professional choir singing, we measured the hearing threshold level of 62 choir singers in a large opera choir. Most publications about noise-induced hearing loss report that the high-frequency region is impaired most. However, in our study the low frequency region was affected most, when compared with normative data (especially ISO 7029). Control groups of women and men with normal auditory function did not show pure-tone hearing thresholds different from ISO 7029. The permanent threshold shifts at 250 Hz and above are most likely noise induced with choir singing as noise source. However, hearing losses at 125 Hz and possibly partial at 250 Hz are caused by some other effect. An (unproven) hypothesis is that singing might lead to increased endolymph pressure, and thus might cause hearing loss especially in the low-frequency region. Whether more choirs show similar hearing impairment and whether singing raises cerebrospinal fluid pressure will be the subject of further investigations.
The choir singer has two acoustic signals to attend to: the sound of his or her own voice (feedback), and the sound of the rest of the choir (reference). The balance in loudness between feedback and ...reference is governed mainly by the room acoustics. Although earlier experiments have shown that singers have a fairly large tolerance for imbalance, with references ranging from -23 to +5 dB, experience suggests that, when singers are given control over this parameter, their preferences are much narrower. A quantification of the optimum balance would be useful in the design of concert stages and rehearsal halls. A method is described for measuring the feedback and reference levels as experienced by singers under live performance conditions. Recordings were made using binaural microphones worn by choir singer subjects. With the given combination of choir and room, it was possible to achieve adequate separation of the feedback and reference signals with simple signal processing. The feedback-to-reference ratio averaged over the 12 singers was found to be +3.9 dB, with extremes of +1.5 and +7.3 dB.
